Lovely song. My dad always sang the song with slightly different lyrics and called it raggle taggle gypsy. Wonder if it's a regional difference or something. Unmistakably the same song tho :) "I'd rather lie 'neith the wide open sky, in the arms of my raggle taggle gypsy oh." Bit different in this version but that line always helped me sleep.

Many many women took to the road for the want of a better life! Away from the 4walls and the groundhog times they were living. Travller or not I believe most women back then loved the tauts of a travelling life ! Far away from the 4walls they were bound too... Try to find the records from women who took to the road with a travelling man !!! Back then you were severely banned from your local town/area/home and disowned from family by living a life were the sky was your roof and the ground and surrounding natural resources was your bed! There was no time to be depressed etc as you'd ALWAYS something to do. This was a harsh life but if u could make yourself a wagon and save enough coppers up to buy a good strong horse then you'd comfort in many ways! So many house born women followed this style of life as all they needed was the blessing from the older travelling family and the willingness to provide a good pot of nourishment!of mainly veg from the fields with game meat provided by your man.if u were very lucky and earned a few Bob then u could buy the cheaper cuts of meat from a butcher !what the traveller folk could provide from them cheapcuts were much more better than what the house folk got mainly bcos they'd buy the lean meat ! Not knowing the valve of natural animal fat ! Which was a scarce treet in those days ! If a normal travller from back then could see how meat is produced and sold today I'm sure they'd still buy what they were useto! Disagree that's totally your opinion just like this opinion is 💯fact ! I'm living proof that in times of famine in Ireland the gypsy could battle thr it bcos they moved with the landscape,I'm a great great great grandson! they weren't stationary to certain death from England trying to wipe us out by robbing burning killing farmers who wouldn't bow to there demands.,... And move a fine English family into the farm to produce for them we useto leave no trail !¡!!!! And kept on moving gathering surviving in the darkness as poaching was your best chance of a breakfast for a couple of family's who stuck together with no knowledge of pen and paper but with knowledge of the land ! No matter who owned the land ! ( Imho nobody owns the land ! The land yous think yous owned is still there today,but honestly but is the once owners still here 😉✌️)
