Tour du Mont Blanc 2024 Stage 4: La Visaille to Courmayeur
Peach and Paul are a Gen X couple from the SF Bay Area who completed the Tour du Mont Blanc in August 2024.
This is Stage 4 of the TMB, from La Visaille to Courmayeur. Paul took a rest day in Courmayeur while Peach hiked solo. She took a bus from Courmayeur to La Visaille (where they ended their hike in Stage 3), stopped for a "caffe" at Cabane du Combal, climbed up to the Aréte Mont Favre for jaw-dropping views of Mont Blanc, and had a pasta lunch at Rifugio Maison Vieille, before descending down to Courmayeur.

July 2024 | Training for TMB, Stage 2: Les Contamines to Mottets Another extended heat wave in the East Bay forced us to head to the Marin Headlands to get some training in. We chose Rodeo Beach as our staging area - with temps in the mid-60s and Karl the Fog cooling things down by a lot! During this hike, we thought about Stage 2 of the TMB - the strenuous segment from Les Contamines to Refugi...

With temps in the mid-90s at Mount Diablo, we decided to take our training to the Reinhardt Redwood Regional Park in Oakland where temperatures were 15-20 degrees cooler, and towering redwoods protected us from the sun. Our goals for this hike: ☑️ Escape the heat ☑️ Practice socializing with other hikers on the route ☑️ Come up with a “safe word” Courmayer is an Alpine resort in northern Italy....

June 2024 For our third training hike, we chose the Eagle Peak loop in the Mount Diablo State Park (8 miles, 2600 feet of elevation gain and loss) with the intentions of: ☑️ Training on technical trails ☑️ Practicing with poles ☑️ Getting more miles, more vert, and a longer descent Through the hike, we envisioned Stage 1 of the Tour du Mont Blanc, which starts in Les Houches and ends in Les Con...

June 2024 After kick-starting our training in late May, we had to pause for two weeks due to a family emergency. But, things are looking up, and thanks to Mike, Paul and I were able to get away for a couple of hours to resume training. Training hike #2 was a loop on the Black Point Summit Trail in Mount Diablo State Park. While the 5-mile, 1400-ft gain and loss route does not compare at all to ...

May 2024 Paul and I are 50-something empty nesters who live in the East Bay (San Francisco Bay Area), and we are getting ready to hike the Tour de Mont Blanc this summer! We’ll be training on Bay Area trails to get ready for this adventure! For our first training hike, we opted to hike in the Shell Ridge Open Space in Walnut Creek, to try and accumulate about ~1400 feet of elevation gain and de...

Have you got a list of gear you used? Doing the TMB next August. All booked, training now😊
Hello. especially when one hikes alone, what extra precautions would you recommend? I see that you have some sort of a tracker on you. Can you write about that a bit?
@@applestamer5924 great question! Thanks for asking! On this hike, I had a Garmin inReach mini which is a satellite communicator (subscription needed). It allows me to share a link to my contacts so they can track me in real time while I’m hiking. It also allows two-way communication via text even when there is no cell signal (especially useful in remote areas). I never go on hikes/runs (especially solo hikes) in the backwoods or remote places, without it. If you don’t have a device like this, make sure you’ve studied your route, be aware of bailout/exit points, have a map (lots of apps like Gaia and AllTrails), and let someone know your plans. I also would make sure to have sufficient water and calories, plus additional layers in case of an emergency (emergency bivvy would be an example). Especially in mountains and high altitudes where weather can turn quickly, have enough supplies on your person to help you survive an evening in the mountains.
I and my lovely wife was there a month ago and we really enjoyed the TMB walking. Good luck and be safe all the time. God bles
Good to hear! Thank you!
Wonderful videos! Did you find that the posted times on the "Signs" were accurate?
@@mtmankowski9114 thank you for the feedback! We were definitely always slower than the posted signs. 😆 I think the number of stops you make (and how long they last), weather, and one’s physical fitness greatly impacted how long it took us to get to our destinations. In our case, unfortunately, descents took as long as ascents.
Great video again. 90euro for a 7km taxi ride seems extortionate tho
@@kieranstafford9718 thank you! My understanding is you could pre-arrange a taxi (but we had no idea what our ETA would be). That might have cost less. Better yet, make sure to arrive in Les Chapieux before the last shuttle leaves.
@@lifesapeach.runandgrow just curious did you carry a water filter on the tour?
@@kieranstafford9718 yes, we carried the Katadyn BeFree water filter bottle (collapsible) and used it a few times. We always started our hike with about 1.5 liters each.
I plan on doing most of this next year with my 14 year old daughter and i found your video very informative. I look forward to the rest. Did you book all the refuges yourself? And is it easy enough to navigate the paths? Did you use a map or a phone
@@kieranstafford9718 I’m so glad you enjoyed it. Thank you for your feedback. We went with a tour company, MACS Adventures. We were very happy with them. It was a self-guided tour so they arranged all the accommodations and provided us maps and an app that were super helpful in guiding us during our hike. There are many signs along the TMB. On a clear day, I think paper maps and the signs should be fine for navigation. But on a foggy/cloudy day, I highly recommend having a map on your phone (AllTrails or Gaia likely have TMB routes on them.) We primarily used the app provided by MACS.
@@kieranstafford9718 for what it’s worth, I wrote this note about planning. Good luck and have a great time with your daughter! medium.com/@peachv/planning-our-2024-tour-du-mont-blanc-adventure-a8ca82f842cd
Super nice Video, very informative. If I may request (we could be doing the TMB in 2026 haha), would you also include your views about the food at the refuges and the rooms at the hotels, especially if they were extremely + or -? I also love the bits about the other people on the trails. It's a very friendly atmosphere. Also, nice that you show the paths, gives us a better idea of how easy / difficult traversing them would be. Congratulations, P&P!
@@applestamer5924 yes, duly noted! Great suggestion. In Les Houches, Hôtel Chalet du Bois was very responsive when I emailed them before the trip; the room was spacious, had a wide balcony with a view of the mountains, and the bathroom was modern and had a tube. We ordered off a menu for dinner (delicious!) and we had many choices for breakfast - all very filling! Also, they agreed to hold our luggage for us while we hiked - free of charge. In Les Contamines-Montjoie, we called the Hôtel le Chemenaz before 7pm as we were running late. They happily extended our dinner time to 8pm so we could get showered before dinner. The room was again clean, spacious, and comfortable with a big balcony. For dinner, we had a delicious 3-course meal and for breakfast, there was a buffet. We ate heartily. I recommend both of these hotels!
Nice job on video 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Thanks for the visit!
Can you go around and do burpees?
Eastbay (Peach) Martha ....... great job
Such a cool video, thank you so much for making and sharing. As someone with ambitions to run ultra trails, but with massive doubts that my body can hack even part of the training, this is so inspiring to see. Huge congratulations!
Thank you for your feedback! Dare to dream and have the courage to try -- that's my mantra! :-) I've since run a few more ultras (and lots of shorter trail races) and I don't think I've reached the limit of what's possible. Good luck to you on your endeavors!
Wooow, New Zealand is so beautiful!
awesome video ! really enjoyed it. I was wondering what a good starting point for 50k training is. There is a race coming up this summer in August and would love to run it ! Any advice would be great, thanks again for an awesome video !
Ugh, my bad! I hope you went ahead with your 50K training. And in case you haven't, I would say to start building your base (run regularly and build up your mileage gradually). Then find a race you'd like to aim for then commit to training for it. Before this race, I trained for and ran a marathon 4 months before Way Too Cool. I took a 2-week break after the marathon then started training for my 50K. I just found a training plan on the internet. Good luck!
you done well other challenger are fast runner, but your can you cam and capture the best part of all trail, good work
Thank you! I appreciate your kind words.
