Great video . I’m a fan of your playing!!
I have learned a nice benefit of being in "invisalign" style braces I have built in protection. Great descriptions and demo.
Nice - Gaia for the tone, but Brahma for better reliability of altissimo. Can the 2 have a baby?
I did not know that. Thanks
Wow great tone you have!
Beautiful tribute!
Hi Randal, could you try the Gary Sugal SC III mouthpiece? I will be purchasing it soon and I would like to know your opinion as a professional. Thank you.
I gotta superjet but never opened the sanborn box yet. Best mouthpiece video ever. Thank you for your talent
Durga HR 7 i bought after this video, nearest Sanborn sounding MP specially if use to playing HR mouthpieces Can't wait until I get my hands on it However trying a plastic reed is going to be a challenge Can you get same sound from a normal reed ? Did you try if so what brand and strength ? Thank in advance 🙏
Nelson Rangell plays a Durga hr too. I’m playing a 2.5 legere American on this video. Vandoren red Java 2.5 or Rico jazz select 2H works well too.
Thank you for that subbed longtime ago 🙏
Hell yeah brother
Greetings Randall, when you play the bellite is heard very loud? Or is it a matter of mastering the mouthpiece over time? I want to buy one but I was trying a friend's but to make it sound I had to play very loud
@@jq_music you should be able to play very soft if the tip opening and reed strength are appropriate for you. I can play soft or loud as I desire.
@@randalclarkmusic4333 Thank you very much for your help Randall
This is very reason I'm an Alto Sax player. We bring passion to our playing!
Sounds great! Is this a Big Sky mouthpiece?
This is a Selmer super session H
That was going to be my second guess!
Have you tried the Jody pieces on Tenor? If so, which one do you prefer for Tenor, the DV or the Superjet? Thanks for the awesome video!! :)
I play both on Tenor. The DV is my primary but if I need a touch more punch the superjet is the ticket. Gerald Albright is playing a superjet. He loves it.
Hi Randal, can you tell me what tipopenig you have on the Beechler?

@8:45 The problem with f key adjustment
I got it finally!!! Gonna keep practicing 😤
Hey Randal, well thought out lesson. As someone who hates having to change setups for various styles. How much do you think you can get away with playing classical music on a jazz setup by adjusting your sound concept. Every time I try to use a classical setup the sound just feels so small it messes with my head. Cheers, Bruce
@@bruceallan3336 it would depend mainly on the mouthpiece design, the baffle type, and the tip opening of the mouthpiece as well as the strength reed that you’re using. Many people play jazz on somewhat closed set ups like a Meyer 5 or the like, and can somewhat get away with playing in a near classical way. However, without a proper classical mouthpiece/Reed set up, it would be very difficult to get a proper tone that would suit blending in a classical section or have the right sound for a soloist. If you are complaining about sounding too small when playing classical, that is most likely due to the fact that you’re reed may be too soft. Using a proper classical mouthpiece set up with a stiffer Reed designed for classical playing like a Rico reserve, or a Vandoren blue box (usually filed/double cut, with a thicker heart) should produce a very open and resonant sound. It should not feel small at all and you’ll be able to maintain a dark core with an even timbre and singing quality to it. On my Classical set up I play a minimum of a 3 1/4 strength. Anything softer will feel bright or small and closed.
@@randalclarkmusic4333 That's my setup, Meyer 5 with 2.5 Legere. I feel that I can change between styles easier than any other mouthpiece.
Hi Randal, Thanks for the very comprehensive reply! I suppose I'm not going to be able to get my Jody Superjet to produce anything like a classical sound. I have to say changing setups and trying to produce a completely different sound on an instrument that one has worked on so hard to achieve a relevant and personal tone, I think I'd rather do that on a completely different instrument. But hats off to guys like yourself that can do both. Classical saxophone does seem to be increasingly popular and as educators we need to be able to cater to that, Thanks again for helping! Cheers, Bruce
Hi Randal, another great sounding demo! Surprisingly different sound from the these MPs. The Gaia has a lot more pop, like a bright Phil Woods thing. The Brahma has a really full core and is a bit muted in the tops, an interesting sound. I can’t help think in any kind of mix the Gaia would sit better. I have played Theo’s new tenor Brahma and that would seem a little different to the alto version. Cheers matey, Bruce
what reed?
It was a fantastic lesson. If you have the time for altissimo lip position when playing jazz, it would be greatly useful.
There isn’t a “lip position” for altissimo. It’s all oral cavity (inside the mouth shape). Check out my voicing, overtones, and altissimo videos.
Lovin' it! The unblinking stare is unnerving though.
@@MaddoxHumphries-w2h noted. I’ll try not to stare.

Almost thought it was David Sanborn
I also play on this mouthpiece. I really like it.
Thank you🎉
With good headphone or full range speakers the sanborn smokes the other two. The other two would need eq to sound their best. That Sanborn is right on. Just give some warm reverb and your gold. Frankly I think the Sanborn is the best sound you've gotten. Next would be the JJ Super Jet. Both are great but the Super Jet rolls off a bit on you. Still great just not that top sparkle the Sanborn gets. I would have liked to hear you on a Durga 8 with Java red 2.5 reeds. The durga 7 is a .080 tip and smaller then you are used to. Was a bit stuffy or could have been nice
Very great video! I could clearly hear the differences. I'm partial to the Contemporary and Studio Jazz. Which would you say is the closest competitor to your Beechler? I feel like it might be the Studio. Both sound like versatile, middle of the road, metal pieces
The beechler is a bit in between. The Contemporary has more fatness and body than the belite, more similar to the diamond inlay beechler. But the belite has a little more brilliance and pop than the studio. The studio is the easiest to blow though.
@@randalclarkmusic4333 Understood. Thanks for your response!
Hello, can you make video- lesson about subtone ?
Took me a full minute to realise this was indeed not about imitating a saxophone with your voice. Ah well ^^ (I know what voicings are, I just wasn't looking for videos on real saxophones)
Cual número está probando master??

Absolute great i have one too 😀 Please let me know which reeds have you used? You sound absolute great... 👏👏 How do you compare this to the drake studio jazz? It sounds a bit similar on the rexording?
I was using a Legere signature 2.5 on this video.
@@randalclarkmusic4333 thank you very much...
I agree it sounds similar to the Studio Jazz. To my ear, this one it has a bit more brightness, though not as much as the Sanborn. Still quite versatile and could easily do pop or traditional-leaning jazz
Are you using the U87 ai or the U87?
@@isaacedwardsmusic u87ai
Great!!! A mix between Beechler Bellite and ARB
I think that’s about right!
@@randalclarkmusic4333 The best of both worlds. Brilliant!!
Wow excellent as usual. I follow your channel and l have learned a lot from you. Thank you Dr Randall
Thanks!
Hi randal, you sound really good!! Hoping that i can produce sound like you with my own beechler
Great lesson 😊
had to chuckle where you preface your attempt to demo a split 'A' with a disclaimer it's hard to do it there compared to altissimo. i can't seem to NOT split that A. I spent an hour earlier today doing very little except trying to not split that A. I haven't even attempted altissimo yet, can't growl to save my life, never realised split tones were a thing people did deliberately, but I'm the king of splitting that A, so that's nice for me I guess
Ha ha. Love it. Look at my voicing video. That may help.
@@randalclarkmusic4333 as it happens I watched this one because it came up as a recommended next video when I watched your voicing one!
Thanks for the comparison..a question that came to my mind os how to not get deaf wihen playing such powerful sounds? (Considering that earplugs do hinder the ability to really feel the sound)
I’ve really never found it to be a problem since the bell/instrument in general is pushing the sound away from you. However, if you’re playing in a small room or in a close space with reflective surfaces, maybe that could be a concern. I often play with noise canceling headphones with a track in my ears, or with musicians earplugs that reduce the sound of decibels equally across the range. But I know what you mean.
this ☝️ ❗️ @@randalclarkmusic4333’s comment FTW ! After 3,000+ concerts/shows & many more thousands of rehearsals, my hearing still tests like someone less than half my age (I’m 60) because I have been using earplugs & noise canceling headphones for virtually everything except for the concerts. I wish you all health and joy. hug 🫂 from the road, Dr D p.s. Thank you Mr Clark for another insightful mouthpiece comparison. And, as always, thank you for your artistry and inspiration.
@@randalclarkmusic4333 thanks so much for your reply!
Studio Jazz has more body Sanborn is very bright and a bit thin Studio Jazz sounds like a saxophone
@@zangsax the studio is also the most fluid to play. Nice piece
Great comparison. Thank you for this.
David Sanborn is fire!
On my nice headphones or my audiophile speakers the Sanborn was best. On a phone or tablet speaker it will sound thin and too bright of course. I think some people comment listening on a phone...
👍🏼 Sanborn
Super Jet 7 ❤
I can’t whistle
Hi there, does anyone know if the Beechler Bellite alto are compatible with the optimum ligatures of Vandoren size soprano?
I dont think so, im using ishimori ligature for ARB and Rovner dark for arb and i love it, you should try, i think beechler has his own size
@@BagusSaxophone Thank you, I'll get some and try
Amazing. Beautiful tone
Hey brother do you think the Durga can be an all around piece. Can you do straight ahead without sounding too aversive and bright? I know for contemporary is great but I don’t know if it would pass as a straight ahead jazz piece without causing stress. Hahahaha
I would think generally not. It does depend a little little bit on the particular player. For example, I can sound fairly passable on it for straight ahead, but it doesn’t really want to sit in that genre, so I’d be thinking too much about it all the time. The Gaia or the new Brahma. Would fit into that genre much more easily. The Jody Jazz DV is a much more versatile mouthpiece that can sort of spread out into those adjacent areas much better
Hi Randal, great demo on all these mouth pieces. Recording quality is excellent, I like the dry but not too dry approach. In terms of resistance and easy of playing which did you get along with the most? Are you looking for a new setup for yourself? Interesting the Drake really did sound the most "Sanborn" . Thanks for putting this up, great playing, especially in this edgy alto thing. Cheers, Bruce
Thanks. Yeah, I find adding just a touch of reverb in the background helps you hear some of the color which isn’t apparent on a completely dry recording. The easiest to play by far was the hard rubber Durga, but I find I prefer the tone of the super jet. The Drake fits somewhere in between
