An eclectic and personal collection. A cat or two (mine and others'), some boats and ships (mine and others'), a travel adventure here and there, and a few surprises thrown into the mix. My goal is to use the internet for good: to educate; to share discoveries; to help build bridges between cultures, between people. And along the way to hopefully learn some things about videography and editing.

Sailboat Approaching Venn Passage Entrance to Prince Rupert
มุมมอง 2616 ปีที่แล้ว
A 36 second video as the sailboat approaches Venn Passage, an interesting and scenic 'entrance' into the harbor of Prince Rupert, BC. It wasn't so scenic this day; instead a thickening fog offered a grey welcome back to Canada. My day began at 0400 in Ketchikan, with a glow from a massive cruise ship passing slowly as I exited the marina in pea soup fog. An extremely thick fog, possibly the thi...

The boat is in Malcolm Passage in the Inside Passage of British Columbia, near Butedale, when I sidled near to shore. I had a half dozen biscuits, but being alone on the boat I couldn't be as bold as I'd like without risking damage to the boat. So they fell short by about a yard. Maybe there'll be another opportunity someday.

I think the HANSEATIC, this one in particular was formally with Zim Lines as the ZION? Later she became the DORIC with Home Lines and ended her career with Regency Cruise Line.
It was built as Shalom for Zim Line in France in 1964 and later it became Doric of Home Lines.
@karireinikainen2876 thank you for clearing that up for me.
Thank you so much for this video! This video helped me get my mind around solving the “relative motion diagram” RMD for the true course and speed of a target
There are two videos there that are related. Hopefully you saw the other one as well. Thank you for the comment. I'm glad it helped.
This is not a rough day?
Nah. Not really rough. It's a pretty benign day, actually. But the approach is interesting and the sudden change: once you get to the bridge, everything is peaceful.
Exelente.
Beware: for someone who doesn't know, that strange licking can be mistaken for the cat having gotten fur into their mouth!
No radio Secuite call, no sound signal, passing on the wrong side of the red (He says thats optional; for clowns maybe) Looks to me to be a clueless and dangerous captain
The video was taken by me while I was lying on the foredeck, so I was not in the cabin with the skipper. But yes, he knows Depoe Bay intimately. As skipper of my own boat, and as a navigation instructor as well, you CAN pass a buoy on the "wrong side" PROVIDED it is safe to do so. This boat draws only two or three feet (my own draws 6 ft), and here it was entirely safe water to do so. What you don't know is that for this video I wanted him to pass to the left and I was waving one arm trying to get him to do that, but he misunderstood my arm waves and took the red on the right side.
@@Houdi2 which is why you use horn signals, not arm waving
As a delivery captain, I've run every bar in Oregon, in every condition, but won't touch depoe bay. No way, no how.
Like a lake
Yup and the buoy should be on the right not the boat.
Yes, agreed. But it was safe to do what he did. See my lengthy answer elsewhere.
If you are coming in blind, is there a radio frequency you use to let boats know you are coming--boat that you could encounter a bit late in the game?
He didnt a sound signal either. Not impressed with this guy
If you would get the other two dead weights off the boat it would have floated right up there.
What approach did u use for cat. Cortisone is not working.
Eventually the vet gave us a RX for prednisolone and allowed us to administer to him on as as-needed basis.
Recently took in an abandoned cat with this condition. We're having euthanized tomorrow 💔 she's the absolute sweetest cat but the 3k price tag for the surgery is just beyond our means.
As a USCG charter captain with a 100 ton license n towing add-on this boat shouldn't anchor that close to a channel.... No matter if its a good fishing spot or not ya don't anchor in a channel...... be well.
Yep,the guys a clown.
@@markhepworth7822 , yep wrong thing to do.. be well.
Can I ask what all his symptoms are please?xx

Pretty Cool!
Any update on Hansi? My inherited 16-year old cat is suffering badly. We've been to five vets and none of them diagnosed stomatitis until this last one. He gave her a long-acting anti-inflammatory shot (methylprednisolone) that was supposed to work for 3 weeks to several months. The first shot worked for 2 weeks, then this 2nd shot only worked for 1 week. Not sure what to do and can't bear to see the cat suffering. Is your prednisolone the same as methylprednisolone? If so, I wonder if every other day tablets might work better...?
I just read the video description and I see that Hansi is gone. I'm so so sorry. He was a beautiful soul.
WHY is the DATE of this Video missing ?
I live near the river and see Tugs often.
Just found this clip hmmmm interesting! I’ve been aggravated by this noise myself. I have a Beneteau First 41.5 with a Perkins Prima M50 / HBW10 approximately 30 years old I had the transmission reconditioned and it never made any difference to the chatter at idle , yes I fitted a new dampener plate. The trans lasted another year before it started slipping in forward , yes I motored a lot. I decided to fit a brand new ZF 12M with another new springless plate from R&D and guess what the chatter was exactly the same . I ran the motor without the trans connected before fitting the new trans and of course it had no chatter. From what I’ve learnt you simple cannot reduce the chatter which is 100% caused by the Perkins “Torsional Vibration” . It’s a tiny transmission with a very light/non existent flywheel. The Perkins M50 should never have been matched to HBW10/ZF 12M . The ZF15M or ZF25M is a better option especially if your motoring often . Ps a cooler is a must .
David, I think you're absolutely right: That tiny Hurth should never have been married to that engine. IF you're interested in upgrading the transmission and IF it would fit your boat, I have the PRM-120 that I installed when my Hurth failed. I installed it in Prince Rupert and used it to get home to Portland. At that point I put in a brand new PRM-90, which is smaller than the PRM-120, and which allowed me to position my engine back in its stock location and to get the engine cover and companionway stairs moved back to their original locations. I have that PRM-120 sitting in my garage. Only about 200 hours on it. AND it's a much huskier tranny than the PRM-90. The 120 was way overbuilt for my 35hp engine. The PRM-120 is about 2 1/2 inches longer than the Hurth - if I recall correctly - so it would only fit on a boat that had sufficient propeller shaft to provide that extra space. (Also sliding the prop shaft back that 2 1/2" or so might cause impingement of the prop with your rudder, so you'd have to plan the install carefully.) No cooler would be required. I have many photos that can help you do your planning. I'd be pleased to sell my used PRM-120 to someone who could use it. About $600, which is WAY LESS than even an overhaul of the Hurth. Leave a post here if you're (or anyone else) is interested. Note that I don't check TH-cam very often, so there might be a delay in my response.
@@Houdi2 Hey, if you're still in possession of that PRM-120, I'd like to talk with you about it. I have a Perkins M-30 on my steel schooner that EATS HB-10's and ZF 12's. I think I have enough room to extend my engine bed if needed, to accommodate it. Let me know.
My cat started doing this three weeks ago. I don’t live with her so I thought it was just random thing that she did the only time I saw her. I took her to the wet today but he’s going to have s closer examination on the next fews days. Im really hoping something can be done for her.
I have sailed on the Hanseatic across the Atlantic in June 1970 as a child with my mom, dad and two sisters from New York to Hamburg Germany, after the ship had docked we've cruised in a rented Volkswagen van for a day or two in Germany before we crossed the Dutch border to settle permanently in The Netherlands. It must have been one of the last passenger vessels in service before the airlines took over.
Good job 👌🚁🚁👌
Very handy 👌🚁🚁👌
Red right returning means bouy on the right starboard side, not boat
You're quoting rules of the road but you took the red buoy on your left skippy.

The clown car/keystone cops routines that USA firefighters do during firefighting is quite amusing. Fifteen different messing with the hose and nozzle routines before they settle on one to continue fighting the fire on the boat. Why do our NATO allies not waste time and effort on that stuff? Maybe because they know they are supposed to quickly get water on a fire and keep water on the fire.
This was a difficult case: 1) fiberglass is extremely carcinogenic; 2) once started fiberglass will burn to the waterline; 3) there are several containers of fuel onboard, such as diesel for the main engine, gasoline for the dinghy outboard, and propane for the bbq. The firefighters' main jobs, it seems from this video, was to rescue affected persons (I saw one being carted away on a stretcher) and to constrain the fire to one vessel if possible.
Was that a "three hour tour"?
It was a private boat: depart at 0400, set crab traps, fish for tuna, harvest crab, return to Depoe Bay about 1700.

May I ask what engine that Hurth was connected to? When you replaced with PRM120, did you have to adjust engine position? I have a 1985 Catalina 35 with a Universal M25 engine and Hurth HBW50 transmission.
Adel, I apologize for not responding sooner. I don’t get on TH-cam very often. My boat is a 2002 Catalina 36 with a 35hp Universal diesel. The Universal is simply a marinized Kubota. I (finally) swapped the Hurth for a PRM-90. Yes, I needed to realign the engine AND to re-pitch the prop. Backstory: I first installed a PRM-120 which was 1 1/2” longer than the Hurth it replaced, because it was what I could get relatively quickly. I was in Prince Rupert, BC, and NEEDED to get a working tranny fast and start moving south because the days were getting shorter. My worry was the long nights I would be facing on the ocean segment from the Strait of Juan de Fuca down to the Columbia River. I had to get moving as time was running out. The PRM-120 forced me to move my engine 1” forward of its stock location. Later, back home I took out the PRM-120, installed a new PRM-90, and put the engine back into its stock location. I still have the PRM-120 with about 1,000 miles in it in my garage. If an Hurth HBW-50 or -100 user wants to overhaul their tranny, this would be a great buy PROVIDED they had enough potential prop shaft movement aft to accommodate the slightly longer dimension of the PRM. My difficulty on my Catalina 36 MkII is that the available prop shaft was minimal. I am told that the Catalina 34 has ample shaft available. Other boats might also. A google search for “PRM-120” will bring up a manual with all specs.
Nicely done!
New subscriber here. Awesome video!
Thank you. That it took me 5 months to reply shows how often I get on my channel.
worthless
It’s fine if you trim the engine up whilst powerloading. Except this guy didnt so dont blame the whole boating community that do powerload properly because of one guy.
My dad took us out in an 18ft Red Fish, round bow, open cabin...going out of depot bay was bad....coming back in....worse!:)
My kitten is recently suffering from stomatitis as well. The vet recommended an antibiotic for him and we're feeding him mousse type of food diluted with a little bit of water to soften it more but he doesnt really eat that much. I'm worried coz he's still so young (about 2 months). He just started having the painful episode and I can't bear to watch.
Hansi is on daily cyclosporin, but I think the magic bullet has been the every-second-day prednisolone. I am not in favor of steroids; they are a loser's game, I believe. However, we have a cooperating vet who allows us to have a large supply of prednisolone that we can administer as needed. Normally a prednisolone every second day manages his mouth inflammation and thus his pain episodes very well, but maybe twice a year we have to give him prednisolone for a straight stretch of three or four days. That and LOTS of LOVE. Our guy is 16 years old now and happy as a clam. Without the prednisolone his mouth would be bright red raw flesh, so we use the steroid. We are grateful for every day we have him. And whenever we take him to the vet they are frankly surprised that he has survived this long.
hi can i ask what antibiotics it is? my cat is suffering for stomatits and i have no enough money to under go dental cleansing:(
Did you bring him to the vet. I truly hope you did.
He’s had great vet care the many years we had him.
