Helping you to plan your trip to Iceland and sharing my experiences from life on this subarctic island.
I highlight the best of what Iceland has to offer and expose the truth behind topics nobody wants to talk about.
I'm a Czech photographer and outdoor enthusiast who first came to Iceland in 2015, fell in love with this place and kept coming back until I eventually settled here in 2018. That's the year I bough a small cabin where I currently live in the winter and which I turned into AirBnb during the summer months.
If you'd like me to help you plan your trip to Iceland, rent my cabin, get discount coupons or check-out some of my guides you can head over to my website www.janiniceland.com

Thanks for the information Jan.....see u soon☺️...ived got lot of information
I had planned a trip once to see Northern lights I plan in couple years
I can do any work 🥲 too came here i just deppresd prsn
Can ihow i can live here😢
Nice sweater, Jan!
Thank you! This one is from Icewear :)
Amazing info. Sorry for your drone. It's good to know about these birds. Here where I live there are a few types of falcons that can attack drones easily. I covered my drone with a few patches of a reflecting red tape to hopefully keep them away. It seems to work well with most birds but it looks like Iceland's birds won't care about the tape and attack it anyway. Thanks for the info!
thank you! I haven't tried the tape yet. I think that it might keep the bird away if the bird thinks its a pray, but if it's trying to protect its nesting ground I am guessing it will attack it no matter what. That's just me guessing though. Been very careful about where I fly since then no doubt
I took a pic of nothern light in Iceland last month with iphone 11, not that great, not sure if i was not aware of any setting
I guess the phone automatically chose the settings, but im glad you got at least some shot!
Thanks a lot for your very informative videos. I'm planning my trip for May 2025 and your tips are gold. I had my first encounter with midges in the isle of Skye in Scotland and, well, they are much worse than mosquitos. You also mentioned drones and I've just realized you made a video on drone regulations about a year ago - I'll watch it now. Are there any changes since then? Thanks again for your great videos an greetings from Brazil.
thank you so much! Yeah I heard that the Scottish midges are hell! Never experienced icelandic midges biting....but some people say they do...Reagrding drones, no changes as far as I know :)
Valid information. Those Vulcano eruptions are pretty dangerous. About the thermal baths: I prefer the GeoSea baths in HUSAVIK (whale watching nearby) to the Blue Lagoon, which, in my opinion is seriously overpriced. Bathing in purified waste water from a nearby plant (look it up, it's on youtube!) surrounded by black vulcanic rocks might look pretty but it's certainly not worth the entrance price. I found Geosea to be much better and the views are amazing. Just my opinion.
it's just a convenient location i would say...but it is overpriced and crowded. many other better options around the island I would say...Geosea is great, the views there are just amazing!
@janiniceland 👍🏻
Man, I got a shock when I came home yesterday, checked TH-cam & bam, another eruption 😮. Been a good distraction & binge watching most of the day. Would never put me off travelling to Iceland, safe as 😊. Ps, we are into day 3 of a heatwave & I’ve had the ac running at times 🥵. Thankfully no catastrophic fire conditions for my state!
meanwhile I'm wearing all my layers here today haha!
I still have my XSMax & it takes pretty good pics but I am sorely tempted to upgrade as the camera function is a top priority for me.
I think it’s really the bad lighting situations where these newer phones shine 🔥
Hi Jan, it is always amazing to think of all of the force underground that causes such an eruption with all of the Hot Lava Flow. Thanks for this video about this current eruption.
Nature is amazing!
Hello there, I was wondering, if I can share with you the most important thing ever before in life. God the Father sent His holy Son Jesus to earth, to be born of a virgin. He grew up and died on the cross for our sins. Then He was put into a tomb for 3 days, after that Abba Father raised Jesus to life.He appeared to people, and went back to heaven. We all must sincerely receive Jesus into our life to be God's child. John 1:12 "But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name" Will you today genuinely by faith-- receive Jesus into your life for salvation?
I was in Iceland when the last eruption started. When I went to Keflavik airport to fly back to the UK, you could see the eruption from the main road. The only change to the flight was that the plane took off to the north for about 10 minutes before it turned south
I hope I‘m allowed to post this here but for me the best way to be close to the eruption is to join a live-stream with Isak. It’s a TH-camr origin from Iceland. He is not only approaching the fissures as a tourist, he is in contact with the local rangers to help to rescue people if necessary. He is a very respectful drone pilot with a Mavic 3 and know exactly how to deal with the wind/weather conditions. The Mavic 3 (series) are beasts as drones but in Iceland they are anyway on the edge with wind and temperatures below zero. Here’s a link for today, may it’s well worth to look around to other live streams. th-cam.com/users/liveU011uA8escE?si=Vhnz_6cVW8F5lWJ8
Will check it out!
Be safe 🙏 dont inhale gas , only turn on lava lamp at home🌋

Hi Jan, it is so true that you can have the best of cameras but if you don't know how to use them properly it doesn't do you much good. Thanks for all of these tips and tricks to get better photos of the Northern Lights. I have a I Phone 13 Pro and the camera on there is really amazing.
it's great to have camera on the phone nowadays, it's definitely come a long way since the first phones - still remember how bad my first phone was with taking photos, seeing every pixel even on that tiny screen haha
Great Video! :) What I can say or add as tourist, but learned a longer time before visiting Iceland the first time: As we were in Iceland, we noticed many People with the same car we had (White Dacia Duster 4x4) stuck besides the road and had a crash or just left the Track... 1. Don't rush...yeah, you are allowed to drive up to 80km/h outside of the towns, BUT if you see something changes on the road, like black, clean asphalt turns into white or snowy parts getting more shiny or what ever, just slow down very soft so that you arrive that parts maybe not with 80, better with 20-30 km/h. As Jan said...the people behind are mostly people who lives there, they know how to drive, so just let them overtake but never try to rush! 2. Is something together with 1: Plan your trips very carefully and slow. A trip of 50-80 km sound's like a one Hour Trip right? No, it isn't...or it doesn't have to... If the weather is good, you can drive the tour within an hour, but we had also one day, we wanted to drive something like 100-120 km's to a spot, planned to make some pictures there, waiting for the Aurora Borealis and driving back like 5 hours later. We didn't thought to the weather...as we started in reykjavik, everything looked fine, but after like 20 Minutes of driving, the weather drastically changed...we couldn't see our own car's hood, so driving in first gear without using the Gas Pedal, and something like only 5 minutes later, we could see, but the short storm brought many snow to the street, so you couldn't really see where you have to go. After 4 hours driving, we took another place, 20km earlier and got the best Aurora Experience we had...only my wife and me and a small, frozen see with a small waterfall. Northern Lights appeared in the perfect direction, so we took Pictures with the water/ice mirroring the Lights while being in a perfect, silent spot! ... okay and we maybe sank the car in a deep Snow, because driving 20 cm too far on the left while leaving the street to the parking place...but we got easily out and 30 minutes later, a couple did exactly the same thing, so we helped them to get out of the situation unharmed and without Damage on the Car. So what I mean: yes, you can do bigger Circles or Reykjavik, Hella, Skogafoss, Black Sand Beach and Diamond Beach in one day...but why? Better plan two or three days for a route like that...better you have 5 hours at the evening to do nothing and just relax, enjoy the view and so on, than to rush from spot to spot, taking one picture, driving to the next spot, taking a picture...it would never get boring on Iceland, so don't worry about that! ;D 3. If you have an 4WD Car, make sure you know how to use it! What I mean: if you can switch between 2wd, 4wd and automatic, like Dacia and many other Cars, make sure you use the locked 4wd in bad conditions, because it could save your life...why? If you have to slow a little down on ice, the Brakes may be to strong for traction...and once you lost traction, your car does everything but not what you want it to do. If you locked in the 4WD mode, you can use the engine-brake, slowly release the foot of the gas-pedal and slowing down without any problems. Also don't think a 4WD car has better grip...I mean, yes it has, but only when it comes to raising speed, not exactly for breaking and mostly also not for steering. So don't speed only because it feels safe while kicking the gas and nothing spins. 4. If you got the feeling you couldn't control the car for much longer, slow down soft and just use the next parking place or a town or whatever you can find to take a break. That place should be as safe as possible, but there are many places, where you could easily taking a break for the next 2 or 3 hours. Don't drive at the side of the road, because there is often snow - as high as the track - but only filled a hole or something, so when you think "yeah, that's safe", you possibly sinking down a half meter or so. Also not stay directly next to the street, because if a car doesn't see you and maybe slides...it could crash...but if you find - like I said - just a small town, an hotel, a photo spot with parking places, a restaurant, whatever...take a break, calm down, wait for better weather and enjoy one of the most beautiful Islands I ever saw! Driving stressed is never good and you'll miss so many awesome things when being stressed.
sooooo many amazing points here, thank you so much for sharing your experience!
Great video by the way...
thank you so much!
Im going in just over 3 weeks, but will just be based in Reykjavik, can't wait.
Joining you in the excitement, i'm going next weel
You will have a great time, enjoy your trip!
My biggest dream is to move to Iceland ❤ only problem is that i'm in a wheelchair😂 I don't think it would work that well with the snow 😂 I would also have less than 400.000 isk to live for each month 🙄
In that regard living in the city like Reykjavík would be probably easiest of your. or Akureyri, which is way cheaper to live in, but has like 3 times as much snow which could be a challenge 😅
@janiniceland thank you so much for your help
loved your video I see so many creators & photographers ignoring these rules
thank you! Yes that's the sad reality here...
Yo, Jan! We are planning a 14 day trip in May but I see the F-roads dont open before June. Are we missing out if we don't reschedule?
I think it's no stress. Just do the trip in May if that's what work the best for you and leave highlands for some other time. If you do the whole ring road and maybe add westfjords region to it, you will have still soooo much to see and visit :)
I need to make a local friend and borrow his car.lol My Canuke buddy stayed in Iceland for 2 years staying at farmer's house or their barn in exchange for some farm work!!
@@benkim2016 yeah that’s one way to do it :) but i still think it’s better to find a paid job somewhere in the countryside hotel, they often provide staff car too. And volunteering isn’t complete legal here anymore as far as I know, as a lot of people were taking advatage of that
As an expat living in Prague, thank you! It seems like you filmed it on my birthday last year (4 Dec), and this year I'll be visiting Iceland for my birthday, so due to this video I know what type of weather to expect :)
@@ramsesvandensteen6386 that’s awesome way to celebrate you bd :) we just had a snowstorm so the winter is back! (Weather updates on my IG 🙏🏻)
Hi Mate, I will be travelling Iceland from 24th to 28th of December. Is this a good decision? I booked a couple of tours such as Nothern lights tour, Whale Watching, Golden Circle, and South Coast Tour. My question is, since we will be getting only 4 hours daylight, is it possible to complete the day tours properly, specifically the south coast one?
Hi, good question. Yes so it's 4 hours but from sunrise to sunset but actually its a little bit more if you also consider twilight which also gives you more or less enough light to visit some sites. But for the organised tours, I honestly dont know - it's their responsibility to plan everything accordingly so i would hope they know what they are doing. the best would be to contact them direcly, that's what I would do....And for any self guided travels once just need to do a bit more planning and take those sunrise and sunset hours in count
Hi Jan, I booked a tour from 24th of December to 28th. I am wondering whether I made a mistake or not. I have booked 4 day tours: 1. Northern Lights 2. Whale Watching 3. Golden Circle 4. Southern part tour including Diamond beach, Galcier Lagoon, and the water falls. My question is if there is only 4 hours of daylight, is it possible to make the southern part properly? Additionally, would you like me to cancel any of these tours and try something else? I am eagerly waiting for your reply and suggestions. It would be really helpful for me.
Hi! I also replied to the other comment but - I usually don't recommend Northern light tours. You're basically booking a tour where its not even certain it's going to happen or if you will see anything - in my opinion just do this on your own, I have videos on my channel that go more in depth on that. Whale watching is definitely a good idea. I have 5% discount with Elding whale watching, maybe you can still apply that. This tour only cancels if the weather is very bad. Golden circle - I guess there's enough daylight for that. I would say they plan what to visit based on how much daylight there is at the particular time of the year. Same goes for south coast, but I have no idea what their itinerary for that is. I would contact them and ask what you're going to see. I doubt they would be taking you to places if it's dark outside, if that's what you mean?
@@janiniceland Thanks for sharing this valuable information, Jan. So, this is what I can expect from the tour, “This tour includes visits to Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss waterfalls, as well as a trip to the stunning Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon. You'll also enjoy the remarkable landscapes of Hvannadalshnjúkur mountain and the black sand desert.” I have contacted with the tour provider and asked my questions. They replied that, our tour is designed based on the daylights. Additionally we have a couple of hours twilight.
Hi! Amazing video, super informative!❤ We just found your video as we are planning our trip to Iceland beginning 2025. I can see this video is a year old, and I wondered if you did get any news on the dates those new rules would be released? Or where would be best to check?
Thank you! you can check the links in description but it seems like nothing has really changed. You only need registration for commercial use as of now
Ok, cancel Iceland.. to many rules.. 😢
naaah I think it's still worth it!
What about 2018 statistics? Rent a camper van from Camp Easy and explore Iceland with and without the crowds. If you rent a 4X4, you can go on the F roads, which gives you a whole other experience. I also recommend camping in small towns and getting to know the culture. It's one of the most beautiful countries I've been to.
visit in winter, its the best, returning for 2nd visit in a few weeks 👍🏽👍🏽
absolutely love the winters here too :) have a great trip!

Thank you for the information. I’m visiting Reykjavik and doing tours to the Snaefellsnes peninsula as well as to the South coast at the end of the November/beginning of December. I’m planning on doing some mild to moderate hiking and am wondering if microspikes (or exospikes) are needed?
it's hard to say - you might need them especially at places like waterfalls, when everything gets frozen around it, that's when it might come handy. I think the snow could be more of a challenge if you want to go hiking, but so far the winter hasn't really started yet, there's basically still no snow here.
I'm visiting Iceland in 2 weeks, and this vid is by far the most informative I have watched. Thank you Jan !!
Thanks Spencer! I'm glad it''s helpful :) Have a great trip!
I have long wanted to visit Iceland but have never thought of going in winter. As a Canadian from a particularly cold part of the country, winter cold is not much of a concern: we know how to dress for winter even if the cold may be more humid than what I'm used to. But ice (especially freezing rain - unheard of when I was growing up) is definitely a big concern. Is freezing rain common throughout winter in coastal Iceland? (or is it something you get only during the transitional seasons?)
I wouldn't say it's too common, but we definitely experience here sometimes even during the winter, likely more often in the souther region...but all in all it happens more in transitional seasons
Yes, please make a video on ho to shoot nice pictures with a phone (iOS and Android) , cheaper point and shoot camera's ( lumix, Sony, etc..) and how you shoot them on your professional camera. Would help tremendously for Aurora enthusiasts and those coming to Iceland to take pictures. Maybe offer a photography tour in Iceland for amateurs and pros? 💡😊
Done, it's on the long ,,shot list'' now 😅 great timing with your comment as I just got myself a point and shoot camera, too haha! I thought about the aurora photo tours, but it is in my opinion too complicated as it all depends on the weather. However, I have some ideas so there might be some kind of tours in the future :)
@janiniceland That's amazing,Jan 👍🏻. Looking forward to it. Have a blessed day 🙏🏻
Great information 👍🏻
thank you!
Wauw, i remember being in Blondus last year. It waw so peaceful and beautiful. However, this mountain pass and its surroundings are new to me. This definitely goes on my must-visit list. Am considering purchasing a drone as well 😊. So many amazing views. Great video,Jan 👍🏻
thank you Harry, I can definitely recommend both the drone and the location 😀🙏
That’s why the eastfjords is my favourite part of Iceland, went in the height of summer but felt still so isolated is a magical place!
It's a beautiful part of the island. I feel like as soon as you pass Hofn, everything gets sooo much quieter
this may be an odd place seeing how beautiful Iceland is but one of my favourite experiences in Iceland was at a little museum called Petra’s stone collection. Was a summers day (about 17 oc) was just such a beautiful place and so peaceful. Then driving up to borgafjordar estri (apologies for the misspelling😂) seeing a small vending machine in the middle of no where and meeting the owner of it who is possibly icelands most eccentric man 😂 then ending the day amongst puffins, was a day I’ll remember forever and would love to return to one day!
Hey bud, thanks for making the video. It helps when a local makes such informative video. I'm coming in a weeks time from Canada. I'm used to cold etc. What should I take care of?
glad it's helpful! For now the winter seems to be delayed, we just had almost 20 degrees celsius last night, which is crazy for this time of the year...but it seems like some winter storm is on the way later in the week so I'd still bring warm and preferably waterproof clothes
@@janiniceland thanks for replying. Coming prepared for rain and winds. We too have crazy weather this year out here in Canada. It's still warm and rainy in Toronto.
