    Loving that there is a website for stupid tourist things. Hope this might actually prevent some of the idocacy that happens in Iceland. I live in a tourist coastal town in the US and it is a love/hate relationship. However, locals do love when the high tourist season ends so we can go back to our local spots. I found Iceland to be fabulous and am glad visit while my daughter is there for graduate school. I know I'll miss the visits when she leaves.

    I had a similar encounter with a pair of Black Kites (hawk) flying way too close to my drone when I was vacationing at Ha Long Bay in Vietnam. I noticed my omni-directional obstacle avoidance warning appeared on the screen from above and since I have the drone in by-pass mode, it reacted by dropping in altitude. I looked up and immediately saw two birds of prey circling over my drone and coming in for a closer look. Luckily, they didn't attack my drone. Since then, I have put red reflective tapes all over my drone as birds tend to be cautious of reflective tapes that are red in color.

    Spent 5 days in Iceland recently - Reykjavik, South coast to Jökulsarlon, up to Snaefellsnes via Borganes, up to Akureyri via Kirkjufell, down to Grindavik, and finally to Keflavik again. This was during the last week of October. I would have preferred to do it earlier in the year. Firstly: That late in the season, it was impossible to go tourist fishing in the sea. I had to try my luck in the harbors. Secondly: when one is going together with someone who is not an experienced driver on snow conditions, but still think that they are good at it, the mountain passes southwest of Akureyri beome downright scary.

    • @janiniceland
      @janiniceland 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      thanks for sharing this Peter! Yeah, the October is usually something in between, but for me personally I really like this month for all the contrasts of orange colors and snow capped mountains. On the other hand, as with any other of the months, the weather in October can be miserable sometimes, too. Some tour operators are closing down for the winter by the end of September/October so that's a good point, it's a good idea to check beforehand which of the desired activities are still possible to do at the particular time of the year. Öxnadalsheiði pass next to Akureyri is a sketchy part of the road for sure, especially in the storm.

    Another great video! Jan, you show the registration and exam fee to be 5500 ISK. Then, later on you say the exam is completely free? Isn't the exam part of the fee? I know I'm probably nitpicking here. Just trying to make sense. I get that rules are necessary, otherwise Iceland will become like the Wild West with tourists doing everything they want without caring about others. However, remote ID? What is that even? Some big brother type surveillance where they can track your drone in order to issue fines in case you fly over an area marked as restricted or during those hours you're not supposed to?

    • @janiniceland
      @janiniceland 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi Harry! Good questions, what I meant was that there is no extra fees for the exam after you paid the registration. - And the remote ID, the explanation on website of ffa will probably explain it better than me, here's what they say : Remote ID is the ability of a drone in flight to provide identification and location information that can be received by other parties through a broadcast signal. Remote ID lays the foundation of the safety and security groundwork needed for more complex drone operations. Remote ID also helps the FAA, law enforcement, and other federal agencies locate the control station when a drone appears to be flying in an unsafe manner or where it is not allowed to fly. - I'm guessing nobody will be tracking it if you fly for example by some waterfall where it's forbidden, but more like in situations like flying near airport, government facilities and so on......all in all yes, kind of a big brother type surveillance 😅

    • @HarryOsirian
      @HarryOsirian 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @janiniceland hi Jan, thanks for your answer. I looked into this remote ID a bit more and the drone station is actually the person flying the drone. It will make it possible for anyone to track where the drone pilot is located. This tramples all privacy laws. I agree that a drone can be recognized, but to then give up YOUR personal location? That is ultimately the negative side of this ID thing. By the way, it's a regulation and not (yet) written into law. There is a lot of uproar in the US about the personal location of the drone pilot. To be continued. 😎

    How is the weather in Iceland for March regarding the auroras? Is it better March than February? I went to Iceland late November early December in 2023 but I want to go back.

    • @janiniceland

      it's really more about the length of the day, for example - February 1st : Sunrise 10:07 / Sunset 17:16 March 29th : Sunrise 06:56 / Sunset 20:11 - so it really depends on when you come, earlier in the winter it is, the better as you will be able to see the aurora earlier in the night (if the weather cooperates) and overall having more opportunities

      Yeah, honestly that's what i would expect, too. I will be doing so more digging in upcoming days and hopefully reach their office directly, so I will post an update when I know more. @stevefoster1511 18 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Thanks Jan. While I don’t have a trip planned back to Iceland any time soon, it’s always good to know about changes. I am licensed in the US and Canada and am registered with the EU and both my drones are as well, so I’ll have to verify that I don’t have to do anything other than add Remote ID information to my controller. Here in the US we also require Remote ID. It’s in the software in my <250g drone but I have an external module for my older, >250g drone so I’ll have to check on that. Spain just changed their rules as well and with this mess in New Jersey here in the US, I predict more regulations coming here too that will make it harder for those of us who follow the rules.

    • @janiniceland
      @janiniceland 17 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I can imagine it can become a headache if one travels a lot, there're always some changes...still I have to say, everything about the rules is at least more or less clear and easy to research, for example compared to many of asian countries. Let's see where it all goes, sadly there're so many people coming here (and i can imagine its the same elsewhere too) who don-t care about anything and are completely ignorant to others who are visiting local sites- so perhaps its just a matter of time before they will tighten the restriction even more, and like you said, that will just make it harder for those of us who actually do their best to follow the rules...Oh well, all we can do is to educate others and sleep well at night knowing we don-t fall into the wrong category of drone users 😅

    • @stevefoster1511
      @stevefoster1511 17 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @ Well said. All the rules and regulations in the world won’t impact the people who think they don’t apply to them. I was at Jokusarlon in 2018 and at the time it wasn’t entirely clear whether you could fly there or not. It was my understanding then that with permission you could do so. I asked around and was told to look for the house where the Ranger lived. If his truck was parked in the driveway you couldn’t fly. If the truck was gone, so was he and you could fly. We looked on the map for the boundaries of the National Park, and flew elsewhere. That same trip was when the DJI Mini had first come out and I watched a guy on the boardwalk at Gulfoss look around, take his brand new Mini out and launch directly in front of the No Drones sign. It happens everywhere and, in fact, more rules are being implemented to curtail drone flights for these and other reasons. I really like the new “compromise” in the Icelandic rules about flying being allowed only in certain times. Fortunately it looks like those times are early and late Golden Hour. YES! A good way to protect the large crowds and still allow for flying at the best times. Can’t wait to return to Iceland. Next trip will include a return to the North and a few days in Siglufjordur. Thanks again Jan.

    Hi Jan, thanks for another awesome video. Especially enjoyed seeing the White snow either in the Natural Sunlight or Artificial light when dark. Weather can be so unpredictable and you have to realize that sometimes you will win and sometimes you will lose unfortunately.

    That everyone speaks English is a big reason I choose Iceland for my first international trip. I am currently working on learning at least some Icelandic. I am somewhat embarrassed that I only know English…pretty lame. Been watching all the volcano eruptions via live stream. I can’t get enough. Currently planning to return in September to the Borganes area.

    I have been to Iceland already 4 times. Last one being September 2024. I can tell that I didn't like it. Too crowded. My quota of Iceland is over. If I ever travel next; I will only go to the remote locations of highland. The common places are completely spoiled. I liked your sentence. Zoo feeling. Exactly that. I am done with route no 1 of Iceland!

    Hey Jan, thanks for the informative Video. I've been thinking about visiting the week before christmas, but as you mentioned the limited amount of daylight time is really putting me off, as there are so many great places along the Golden Circle I'd like to see. What I got from the video is that, I can still get to enjoy the wintry atmosphere in Feburary or March. One thing I would like to ask is, how long would you recommend for a stay which covers the golden circle and a day or 2 just exploring Reykjavik?

    • @janiniceland
      @janiniceland หลายเดือนก่อน

      It definitely has its downsides, but you could maybe split your day a little bit differently and do more slow paced travel so for example you could spend the dark part of the day soaking in springs or lagoons and use the daylight to visit the sites. I would say that 1 day is enough time for golden circle to see the highlights, but you could divide it into two days if there're many things on the list you would like to see and do in that area. 1 day in Reykjavik is enough in my opinion, but you could base yourself out of there and also have one extra day to for example explore Reykjanes peninsula.
