Mr Bolduc, your teaching of this novel was quite transformative!
Thank you, Debatian. Good books are the best teachers.
I’ve read the book several times. The matter-of-fact tone, the clear descriptions are fantastic. I loved the book. Can highly recommend. His fate was chosen for him so is there free will?
Yes, I look forward to reading his other work. Schopenhauer has a great essay on free will, "On the Freedom of the Will." It could make an interesting comparison.
That was great. Very impressive. I liked the book too. I perceive Bloom's "Closing of the American Mind" as essential reading for folks trying to understand how we got to where we are. I sometimes enjoy reading from both books from which I learned so much. Thank you for this.
Thank you. I haven't read Bloom's book yet, but your comment makes me want to.
Analyze thick of it by ksi plz 🙏 😢 i love your content
hearing yamashita in your voice again awakened something in me i think
Is it just me or have you de-aged after I left BIBA
I like your cameo in ookla the mok
It wasn't a cameo. I am Ookla the Mok.
FINALLY someone remembers this magnificient book!!!!! 💥 🎉 I have NEVER again been able to find it anywhere, after I saw and read it in, my philosophy institute library!!!! 💥 💥 To me this was his best book.
Yes, it's definitely a book worth reading more than once.
@@positivereadings8909 Maroussi is also great, and of course OPUS PISTORUM, and his book about RIMBAUD and the one about DH LAWRENCE
Anyway- it’s great to see someone making a video on it here and now! Just 10 days ago. I think the only other one I saw was like 11 years ago lol
I am rereading this now after 25 years… it left an indelible mark on me… it seemed like a work of seminal literary importance but I was surprised this summer when I searched for analysis of it on TH-cam and found virtually nothing!
I just discovered it recently. I had only knew of his two Tropics and I wasn't really ready to read those back in university when I originally tried.
The colossus of Maroussi (Ma - rue - sea )
Where were you, SuperDood, when I was making the video?
@@positivereadings8909in the future I'll bring back my time machine and I'll meet you in the past. And now I'll thank you for the video
Bring back the beard
I'm always working on it.
Looks dystopian
Shopping for energy bars made with only two ingredients at 7AM inside an overly air-conditioned warehouse is dystopian.
Did you use a phone or a camera? Looks phenomenal
Thank you. I used a Sony a6400. I use it for all my videos.
Beautiful
Thanks, dude.
22:41 events calling for a greater examination of our human circumstances - that 'the line between good and evil running down the heart of every man' necessitates more than mere courtroom revenge
24:06 systematic blindness to one's own humanity, as a social system
That's a good way to put it.
I knew Professor Norman Bentwich, the first professor of International Law at the Hebrew University. A very distinguished British jurist. If I recall correctly, he argued Eichmann should not be hanged in Israel as Israel had no death penalty. I may be incorrect about that, and he may have argued, like Arendt, that it was a matter for an international tribune based on war crimes or crimes against humanity.
I'm not familiar with Professor Bentwich. Thank you for the introduction.
@@positivereadings8909 He was also the Attorney General under the Mandate.
Looks amazing
Happy 4th of July!
Very informative sir! I have an interesting question to entreat of you: When do you think compliance creates complicity?
Thank you. Although Arendt doesn't discuss complicity, I think the implication is that certain individuals in the councils were complicit and benefited financially from it. Of course, the alternative was probably death, but it seems to be worse than simple moral cowardice.
Crows pick out the eyes of the dead, when the dead have no longer need of them; but flatterers mar the soul of the living, and her eyes they blind. -Epictetus
I’ve been meaning to read Epictetus. Thanks for the inspiration.
Yes. My impression of Philinte is that he is a philanthrope and foil to Alceste in a manner evocative of Stoics and Cynics.
Seymour Rudin has an essay on Rousseau’s criticism of the play. I haven’t come across any Stoic readings of it. Sounds interesting.

This is also my favourite Kawabata novel, definitely agree that it’s his masterpiece. Thanks for sharing your thoughts

amazing essay
Great video
Glad you enjoyed it
Looks really cool
Awesome production quality Sir. Cheers!
You're funny mate
Enjoy the video enjoyed listening to you describe the both books. Cb
enjoyed the two books! also, i had troubles purchasing the book with PayPal, and wondered if there is other ways i could purchase nonlocal.
Enjoyed this review a lot. Looking forward to Episode 2!
Amazing video! Looking forward to episode 2 of Positive Readings!
Very high-quality video! I really enjoyed it. The book sounds really intriguing. It's really horrible knowing how the American dream can destroy a person, what is more absurd is that this happened to many people back at that time, and people were at their lowest all because of this "American dream".
enjoyed part 1, hoping for part 2!
