    'Police found the gun... in a bottle of liver pills... "Hands up," says the sheriff, "Hannnnnnds up..." Grey Fox also stars the late Jackie Burroughs too?! Grew up with Roger Moore as my first Bond. These days, he'll always be SImon Templar to me. That said, I'm a sucker for Spy Who Loved Me and Moonraker if only for Richard Kiel. Jaws was the most memorable henchman since Oddjob IMO. Always thought that space laser battle in Moonraker was particularly grim, what with John Barry's dirge playing in the background & astronauts spinning off to die in the cold vacuum of space... (shudders) Only saw Octopussy once in the 80's... apparently the guy who played Ranjeet in Mind Your Language was in it. Dunno if he mighta been the guy with the circular saw yo-yo? Garbage Pail Kids... hoo boy, all I remember from having seen it when it came out on VHS was a vomiting scene. Let that serve as either a warning or an endorsement depending on one's tastes 😅

    Quel coincidence... I had the J. Geils Fright Night song stuck in my head at work earlier today, strangely because a coworker had Angel is a Centrefold playing prior. The film is a childhood favourite of mine. Stephen Geoffreys, Roddy McDowell and Chris Sarandon are all weirdly likeable, & some of the creature effects were pretty rad (Amy's vampiric grin is still the stuff of nightmares). The Craft was OK I guess... I only watched it for Fairuza. 🥰 That Dark Crystal edition is a nice score, but I'm even more envious of that hardcover.

    • @nightowlvideoreviews
      @nightowlvideoreviews หลายเดือนก่อน

      I just never loved "Fright Night" just thought it was okay - but just my opinion. Didn't really like "The Craft" either but I think it got overhyped to me for too long. The "Dar Crystal" book is so amazing to be honest. Froud's artwork keeps me coming back for more (much like the movie!)

    • @CSGraves
      @CSGraves หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@nightowlvideoreviews Yeah, Froud's work has fascinated me since taping Dark Crystal off CHSJ back in the 80's... r.i.p. that particular VHS tape! 😢 I could see Fright Night not being for everyone... movies that blend horror and comedy especially seem to tread that fine line of just either clicking with audiences or not. I recall a lot of Craft hype back in the 90's. You just know it inspired a lot of black nail polish sales after it came out. It was kinda like training wheels for a goth-cycle.

    I know what you mean on the hype about Last Action Hero, I recently found an Arnold 4 movie collection that has his first movie - Hercules in New York......which is so goofy low-budget bad it makes Last Action Hero seem like a four star movie. The collection also included the recent "Maggie," which was kind of like a Walking Dead style zombie movie, something really different for him. Cool CDs, I just got the criterion Complete Monterey Pop, which has the Hendrix set and it really looks fabulous with the work they did for the blu-ray; John Philips had a great quote - he said "we listened and watched him play, but we still didn't know how he got those sounds (from his guitar). I also found the marvin gaye dvd from 1980 Montreux jazz fest, it's a good watch but unfortunately his vocal mic was just barely in the mix for the recording. The Craft was pretty good - that dvd pack would upgrade my tape of monster high!

    I remember seeing Patton when they ran it on TV and it's interesting revisiting after that much time - most of the movie is about his psychological problems/career downfall. It's a good performance, but on the whole slightly underwhelming. 1940s-1950s hitchcock might be my favorite era (Spellbound, Notorious, Lifeboat, Paradine Case, Under Capricorn) (I Confess, Wrong Man, Dial M for Murder, Strangers on a Train). Most people seem to only focus on birds/psyco/northNW. I think it took a second watch of Mars Attacks to appreciate. My copy lives in the jack nicholson section and It holds up a lot better than Witches of Eastwick.

    Worth the watch if only to be able to appreciate Martin Short as 'the kid from Deliverance' on SCTV... unless you're Lucille Ball. Edit: My mom even had the soundtrack on vinyl. The movie was surprisingly funny and very entertaining. I love the concept as well as the social commentary HOWEVER it has the same issue i have with a lot of jordan peeles work: nonsensical plots that prioritize allegory and commentary over having a cohesive narrative that makes sense. I just find it too hard to overlook the absurdity and plot holes in things like get out and Us. Nope was an improvement in that regard, as i feel like the commentary and symbolism was more organically woven into the narrative and it just felt like a more solid and cohesive movie. However even nope was really lacking something for me. But its just a matter of taste for me. Hes a great filmmaker it just so happens that stylistically and narratively he continuously makes choices that personally bother me. And it can be a little frustrating because he has drastically influenced the trajectory of modern horror in such a short amount of time, just like ari aster with hereditary. And because of that so many people are emulating their styles and in turn emulating the same things i dont like. So after seeing all of jordans and aris movies and countless movies that desperately want to be get out 2 or hereditary 2 and emulate these sorts of narratives and filmmaking styles, just leaves me kind of frustrated and burnt out on the original work.

    I want to believe there was a film critic at the time who, one-upping the critic who lambasted Spinal Tap's _Shark Sandwich_ in a two word review, appraised _Species_ with but a single word: _Feces._ Giger's involvement is tempting, but, not sure this is one I'd want to spend the time on from the sounds of it... and definitely not the sequels!

    I love this movie! It's one of my favorites. Sure, it's cheesy but as you said it does get creepy. Even with a decent budget, I suppose they still had to stretch their money and it only goes so far. I love that robot. OK, so he does have an odd looking head but it doesn't bother me. Honestly, I can imagine if they tried to make the head more humanoid looking they probably would have messed it up. It's possible their budget didn't allow that anyway. Yes, Harvey Keitel's voice was largely dubbed over by British actor Roy Dotrice(one of the stars from the TV show Beauty and the Beast from the 80's). I have that very same edition of the DVD. 30 bucks from a "thrift store"!? Ouch! Fortunately I bought my copy brand new for at least half that eons ago. Anyway, it may not be perfect but I find it perfectly entertaining and I think it deserves more love.

    Species is pretty fun, I guess it was probably the one of the last times that kind of sex-and-violence B-movie would get a proper budget and a full theatrical release. I don't think anything in the film itself is as bizarre as the fact that it very possibly is responsible for the 'Chupacabra' myth - the original eyewitness had recently watched Species, and described something very similar to Sil's 'alien form'...
