the problem is Hayley doesn't sound like normal singer. There's really a punch in her voice that only she possesses. Her belt is non-understandable because they say it's mix but she makes it sound non-mix. And, yes she has cries in her voice that's so rare. it's not overdone

Great exercise, thanks! By following your I can see that if I ever had any training I could be an Alto.. (but not a soloist.) I find Alto and Contralto the most pleasant female voices to listen to. Mezzos are ok, sopranos soloist have to be really good, otherwise I can’t enjoy them. Anything higher drives me nuts (Sadly I can namely stand listening to Kate Bush in her Wuthering Heights, even though the lyrics are a blast).

List of modern contraltos here! Some surprises (to me). It seems from a well-informed comment below that they might have cast the net too wide. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_contraltos_in_non-classical_music Away from the moderns - Kathleen Ferrier! In the UK hers is the first name that comes to mind among claasical music folk if you you say to them 'Gimme a contralto'.

I love Toni Braxton and Cher. Of course, there are some other contraltos not mentioned in this video, including Nina Simone, Judy Garland, and Carly Simon, Not every contralto is a true contralto. In fact some singers are misidentified as contraltos not just because of how low they can go, but because of the richness of their voice, especially in the chest register. Take Karen Carpenter, for example. Her voice is mistaken for a contralto because of how rich her chest register is, but her voice overall is too feminine. Sure she may have been a contralto in her early days, but that was because her voice was not fully developed. By 1973, it became clear that she was more of a mezzo-soprano.

Even in classical settings I’ve seen mezzos do sopranos and alto roles, it’s all about training.

Unfortunately too many vocal coaches still are ignorant when it comes to this thing and spread their ignorance by telling their students what voice type they are and what's within their range. There needs to be more awareness about this. There's so much false information out there especially on this.
