Opening A Wax Figure Cast
In this video I demonstrate how to open a wax casted figure from a silicon mold. This is the molds "first cast", which is when a mold has only been casted one time, in which the sculptor learns how this particular shape needs to be opened. At times, depending on the sculpture, I refer to this part of the process as a "test cast", in the case that a second cast might be needed.

Mold Making - 2 Piece Plaster Mold
มุมมอง 3K2 ปีที่แล้ว
In this video, I demonstrate how to make a 2 piece waste mold of a sculpted terra-cotta clay form. The 2 piece waste mold is used to make only 1 casting and is discarded after use, which is why the word "waste" is used. Therefore, "undercuts", which are areas where the mold will lock onto the sculpture, are not an issue and with this technique, you can make an mold out of almost most any sculpt...

Would love to know what happens after making this. I know it can't be fired, but will the clay harden and can be painted? Is this model for a much larger piece?
Would love to see: (1) finishing demo, (2) larger body size sculpture demo! Would also love to contribute to that financially
Thank you for this series!
Hello :) I was wondering if it was possible to make a mould with alginate casting of a sculpture made from plaster and not clay? So essentially make a mould to make a copy of a plaster sculpture? i am wondering because plaster is not oil based so will it not work? does it work if you cote the plaster sculpture in oil first? I have never doen anything like this before😅 thanks!
Hello! Yes you can make an alginate mold out of a plaster object. Alginate doesn't stick to much but it would be ok to apply a really thin coat of vaseline to the plaster object in order to insure it doesn't stick. Go for it and good luck! Nathan Orosco
Plasticine seems like the perfect clat to start sculpting. I´ll try sine before trying to use epoxy putties on my minis
Beautiful!
Working on head sculpt. Just what I needed! Thank You So Very Much for your Hard Work!
great lesson and thank you... but man ever been told you waffle on a bit. over all around 15 minutes of waffle, please work on being more concise please, IE: "i am grabbing the wire with two hands." ah here i was about to use my telekinetic powers lol. i watched twice though. there's good information in here.
Thank you :)
Would love to see how you finish it with paint or ...... :)
When you say it's a prototype it means this is not the real sculpture? It's just to give you an idea how to make one bigger? This sculpture, could you sell it when finished???? Thank you for all of your information. It's really interesting. How long could this sculpture last if taken care of and how do we take care of it? AND if you take out the screws, will it be able to stand elsewhere , like on a flat surface? THAN YOU :)
Thank you so much. I had stopped my passion till I found another way of sculpting because I couldn't fire my sculptures. I LOVE CLAY so I am SO HAPPY having a solution without firing it. Gratitude :)
Thank you :)
Could we still sell it even though it wasn't fired to become ceramic? If so, I guess it is worth less????Please.
Such a talented man giving us inspiring and informative videos. Thanks so much.
I have seen alot of videos on sculpting. Very few build from the anatomy bottom up. Its a very very cool technique. Alot can be learned.
Is there a video before this one please showing how to construct the fence and what it’s made of? Also, was the clay coated in anything to aid release once the mould is hard? I remember doing this about 50 years ago and I seem to recall using very thin squares of copper to construct the fence. Is this no longer done. I want to start sculpting again and your site has been very helpful in reminding me of most of the various processes. Many thanks.
Hi! I usually use a clay to construct fences. I roll a coil of clay t about 1inch round then compress it to a 2 x 1/2 in shape strip. I will eventually make a video of this step. I do not use metal shims (copper or aluminum as you mentioned) for silicon rubber molds. I do use metal shims to create plaster molds though, which is the more classical mold making process that is still very valuable for specific sculptures. No, for this sculpture I used water based terra cotta clay and kept it leather hard (still wet but stiff like wax), so silicon doesn't stick to anything "wet". Glad my videos are helpful! Many thanks!
Could you tell me please if the clay had been allowed to dry out fully before the plaster cloth was added or had it still been kept under the damp towel and plastic? Many thanks.
No, let the clay harden to a "leather hard" state which is stiff like wax but still has a large amount of water content. I kept a plastic bag over water based clay in between working to control the drying. You can keep clay leather hard for months if you control the drying, with the occasion spray of water or leaving damp towel over it while bagged. Good luck!

Hello, did you do the other chapters?
I have made some charactures with plasticine but they are covered in finger prints. How can I avoid this?
You can usually treat the surface my gently smoothing/petting the clay with a plastic bag (small ziplock) pulled tight around your finger. Its a good idea to attach your forms onto a wire so it can me maneuvered without touching the clay. Temperature is also a factor with plasticine, so try to work the surface in cool environment. Good luck!
Excellent idea.TY for sharing! Bless you!🙏
From watching the video, the second one was the bad one where it wasn't mixed properly and was too thick. The first one looked much better imho
I need the name of the clay you use
Hi! Typically I use a terra cotta (red clay) to sculpt/model. Is a regular water-based clay for pottery. Terra cotta is really smooth and good for detail. best! N.O.
what is the canvas board for? You didn't use it.
Hi! I made these videos for my sculpture classes during the covid lockdown so the canvas boards are used for students as a "work board" and was given to then in their supply list. Canvas boards are good because clay does not stick to canvas, therefore students can use the canvas board to compress flat the clay slab needed for this assignment. Regular denim canvas works good. best! N.O.
where is part 2? What about the eyes? the back of the head?

Thank you, your video is very helpful.
So could you use air dry clay after plaster cloth strips?
Hello! Yes you can. In "Part 2" of this demonstration, I proceed to use water-based clay to continue to sculpt the form. th-cam.com/video/4yk7BKPZXX8/w-d-xo.html Be sure to watch Part 3 when I then use plaster to add to the surface of the form. Best!

Hey Nathan, thanks so much for the tutorial. Some great ideas to try out. My gesso is a lot thinner than yours though. Probably cheaper too. Greetings from Scotland 👍

Thank you very much! Back in the day! The 90's!
Very very helpfull thank you si much
You are welcome!
Thanks for this
Strange how some of the most inspiring videos are ones very few people are watching. I found ceramics too hard to be expressive with on one of my courses at my first art school. I was always going to be a 2D specialist, mainly painting and drawing. The only material that fascinated me in ceramics was plaster-forming, though we did no more than fill party balloons to produce interlocking forms. Then recently I set up a corner of my mini studio at home for plaster so that my friend could do some experiments. My own small attempts have been rather banal, but having watched your video the potential of plaster reliefs seems to have opened up for me. I will need to buy some extra bits but it looks like I could enjoy something again that I had left behind. Thank you very much for making this video, which is obviously intended for your students. As I say I am a painter (a rather old one too), but even so a small light bulb has switched on for me. Thank you again.
מעניין מאוד
Hi - thank you for your videos I've learned a lot! I'm just wandering why you are using clay if not firing or casting? Could you just add plaster to it so you have a finished piece that will last?
Thank you! Well, using water based clay has always been sculptors preference for modeling even if the artists don't want to fire the work, or doesn't have the means to. Dry clay can still last a very long time especially with adding a layer of plaster over on top and keeping the sculpture indoors. So yes, adding a layer of plaster, as demonstrated, is a way to sculpt water based clay without having to invest in a ceramic kiln. In fine art terms, this process would be called an "additive" process, meaning the artist is combining materials in such a way that realizes the form instead and adhering to a specific material process, such as ceramic fired sculpture process. best!

Ectrs thank you
NPI
Are they too thick to fire?
Hi Bonnie! Well that depends on weather you compressed the clay form to ensure that there are not air pockets on the inside. If there are air pockets then the form would crack during the firing process. You can always cut the forms in half while the clay is "leather hard" and hollow out the inside to create a 1/2 inch thick shell. You would then "score" the 2 shapes back together and poke a little hole, about 1/8 inch thick, so the are inside can escape while the clay shrinks during the firing. Thank you for the good question! Best! N
I look
Nathan, why you want to sculpt the lips first ? I'm curious about it
Hello! Thanks for you question. In this demonstration, it is only the muscle structure of the full mouth that is applied, not the "lips" (the part that we put lipstick on). It is important to understand that there is a muscle structure to the mouth that must be considered before the lips. If you do not apply the muscle structure first, the sculpture will typically not have the "depth" and complexity that a the face contains. Best!
@@nathanorosco-demonstration5637 why you didn't sculpt the muscle for the nose ?
@@hugger1ify Simply because the nose is not a muscle. I will be making a video demonstrating how to begin facial features (eyes, nose, lips). Best!
@@nathanorosco-demonstration5637 wow, awesome 👌 can't wait to watch your demonstration.
Does air dry clay crack when applied to a wire armature?
Hello! Yes it will if you allow it to get to "bone dry". This specific process continues in Part 3 and 4 where I demonstrate how to cover it with paster fabric to protect the clay and experience how to treat the surface of your sculpture by filing and sanding. Please view those videos. Thank you for your question! Best!
Extra thank you
@@nathanorosco-demonstration5637 Wouldn't the clay become moldy over time being trapped under the plaster? Have you noticed any signs of mold on these works?
No, not if it is kept dry. This process is more so an armature to sculpt a form that would potentially go into the mold making process. But there are many armatures/maquette that are very old in museums becuase many materials that are fragile, and are kept inside can last a good while. Best!@@gooosedog
