I really like your use of the foam board instead of the rolled reflective, bubble type! Interesting point, re the use of a piece of drain tile tunnel for entry. I found most feral cats won't use though, unless there's 2 openings! Escape is always on a cat's plan! Excellent loving help for beautiful creatures ❤!

Maybe two entry ways would be better, one for escape if there might be an intruder. I had one of these on my drive way for years, never had any evidence that an animal used it, maybe they dont feel safe without an easy escape hatch.

That derma foam board you are using is toxic to humans and animals. Unless you are specifically using the non toxic green foam board and if so why aren't you informing people of the difference. I almost bought some of that foam board to make a shelter for a stray in my neighborhood based on your video. Thank God i decided to look up the details on this product .. it's made with polyurethane which is very toxic and should not be used in homes either. You guys need to do your homework before you do these videos. You also need to inform the public . Shame on you

brillant thanks for sharing my parents live near Atlanta and have a small colony in their backyard. Even though we live in the deep south I think it is a good idea to give them shelter on the back deck. They feed them daily and let them in the house occasionally but they are still feral. One thing Chicago did and it is a brillant idea is they adopted out semi feral cats to city dwellers to get rid of rats. It worked like a charm. Chicago has the biggest rat problem in all of the US according the Terminix Pest Control. It turns out the people who adopted them kept them outside with a cat house similiar to yours and fed and watered them daily. I did not know this but the video said that just the smell of cat uring and cat poop kept the rats away!!! WOW!!! I am so glad that I watched the video. It was a win/win scenario for the homeowners and the semi feral cats. They vetted the cats and spay/neutered them before adopting them out. Sort of a city version of a barn cat.

How many cats can live in a large tote? There are hundreds of feral cats in my neighborhood I’m going to hurry up and before summer is over and makes several of these warming homes and put them underneath the crawlspace in the house next-door and hope that it helps the cats this year keep warm. They generally go under the houses in the neighborhood to get warm in winter but I don’t know how they manage. For nine years lived here six of those years I have fed and watered and loved the ferrules yet they still are wild and very wrong to go to the harsh winter in Michigan here in the USA. I am not too technical and don’t have a lot of money but it looks like I may be able to manage to build the warming house is that you show here without any problem and place them in the crCrawl space in the house next-door to me which is not currently occupied on one end . Last year was brutal here as always but it seemed even more so as we had ice storms rain sleet and snow and not just snow to worry about hoping the cats could make their way . I put food and water out several times a day of winter on my porch but the winter winds ice and snow still hindered me ; still , I try but my land lord is totally against me helping the cats at all and has been all these years I have been here, and I am always being threatened with eviction for helping the cats, also the majority of the neighborhood people are totally against helping the cats they hate them and they hate me for helping them so I have a difficult time trying to help the poor cats 😢😢😢😭😭😭😭😭😭because they have no one else. In a few months ago someone poisoned the water I had put out for the cat so now I’m not able to do that and I had to thanks to one graciousness neighbor , put cat food under her house for the cats but I can’t be too obvious about it because of the poisonings and because of the landlord. But I have been worried so much about the cats with this coming winter so I’m going to try these shelters you have shown on this video is to God that they help. Thank you very much for posting please say a prayer for the cats here and thank you for helping the ones that you help where you live🐈🐈🐈🐈🐈🐈🐈🐈🐈🐈🐈🐈🐈🐈🐈🐈🐈🐈🐈♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️

Hi there. It’s not necessary. We actually no longer add one. We included it to add extra insulation. But over time we realized that with one layer of the Durofoam we use (which is already lined with Mylar) on the floor, along with the straw was more than sufficient.

New Book Calls for Removal of Outdoor Cats 'By Any Means' Cat Wars ignites a fiery debate over the impact of felines on birds, and what to do about it. 5 MINUTE READ BY BRIAN CLARK HOWARD PUBLISHED SEPTEMBER 20, 2016 A NEW BOOK throws catnip to the opponents of free-ranging felines, arguing that feral and outdoor domestic cats are tremendously damaging to wildlife, specifically to birds. Authors of the academic-leaning tome Cat Wars criticize the common practice of trapping, spaying, and releasing unowned cats and write that "we need to act on all fronts to stem the tide." While there is no silver bullet to the problem of too many cats, all avenues should be explored, including euthanizing cats that public health or wildlife officials deem problematic, the authors note. But that view has some cat advocates howling mad. Opening with the story of Tibbles, a pet cat that is blamed for the extinction of the rare Stephens Island wren off New Zealand in the late 1800s, Cat Wars makes the case that “mounting scientific evidence confirms what many conservationists have suspected for some time-that free-ranging cats are killing birds and other animals by the billions.” The book’s authors are Peter Marra, head of the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center, and writer Chris Santella. They write, “From a conservation ecology perspective, the most desirable solution seems clear-remove all free-ranging cats from the landscape by any means necessary.”

Wild cats kill more animals than domestic ones do. But pet cats kill many more of them in a small area than similarly sized wild predators. Full Transcript Domestic cats that live or go outside kill lots of wild animals. Recent studies find that outdoor cats in North America take out between 10 and 30 billion birds and mammals each year. Still, it hasn’t been clear what kind of an impact the world’s 600 million pet cats have on wildlife populations-and whether that impact poses a threat to biodiversity conservation. “Anyone who has a cat sees their cats bring animals home. And the question is, ‘Well, does it matter?’ And especially, we wanted to know, ‘Where are the cats actually hunting? Are they hunting in their backyards? Or are they going out into the nature preserves?’” North Carolina State University zoologist Roland Kays. Together with colleagues in the U.K., Australia and New Zealand, Kays distributed small GPS trackers to citizen-scientist cat owners. They attached the trackers to their cats’ collars. In all, more than 900 pet cats were tracked this way, all of which were routinely allowed to roam freely outside. Some cats were true explorers. One British cat called Max walked almost two kilometers back and forth along a road between two neighboring villages-twice! But the majority were homebodies, rarely straying more than 100 meters from home. In other words, they used their own backyards, plus those of a few neighbors, as their hunting grounds. The findings are in the journal Animal Conservation. [Roland Kays et al., The small home ranges and large local ecological impacts of pet cats] A single pet cat doesn’t kill as many animals as a wild cat does to survive. But the pet’s impact happens in a much smaller area. So in a given area, say 100 square meters, pet cats kill between two and 10 times as many other animals as do similarly sized wild predators. “We were able to put this into kind of a currency, into a value of ‘How many prey animals does a pet cat kill per hectare, sort of per area, per year?’ And that’s something we can also estimate for wild predators. So we were able to estimate this for a wild cat called the jungle cat, which is about the same size. And they kill a lot more per cat because they have to hunt to get everything that they eat, whereas the pet cats get their food bowl. But they hunt over a massive area, compared to the pet cats.” And in some places, including California, Florida, Australia and elsewhere, cats were an important threat to some species that are already in trouble. “On one hand, it’s kind of good news that the cats aren’t going out further abroad. But it’s bad news that they're quite likely to have an impact on animals they share space with near their houses.” With so much killing concentrated around people's houses, the positive impacts of urban wildlife-like the beauty of songbirds or the way small lizards can control insect pests-could get washed away in precisely the areas where those benefits are most appreciated. So when conservationists implore cat owners to keep their pets indoors, scientific evidence agrees. -Jason G. Goldman
