We are a semi-retired couple living in the Eastern Townships of Quebec, Canada.
Our goal is to share our adventures while also learning how to create some interesting and fun content. There will be cycling and sailing and skiing and travel and scuba diving. Maybe even some DIY stuff and cooking. Basically a mish-mash of our lives.

Sailing in Light Winds
96. Sailing in Light Winds
Footage from 2023 sailing season.
Light wind days mean we don't travel very far...hours later and we still see our marina.
Our boat sails well in light winds. In fact, it is not set up for strong winds...not enough reefing points.
Consequently, we rely on a favorable forecast but sometimes the wind is less than expected.
One good thing about light wind sailing...it's easy to walk around the boat and hang out at the bow.
It is easier to balance the boat in light and/or not gusty winds. Simply put, this means that the steering force equals the force from the sails.
Why do cormorants fly so close to the water? I asked google and apparently: "Skimming permits the birds to take advantage of an aerodynamic phenomenon known as "ground effect."
...which reduces drag of the airflow around the wing...pretty smart!
Sometimes, even if there is no wind, we go out hoping it will pick up.
And this is what sailing in good wind looks like.
Dock neighbors: gratitude and revenge!
But no matter what kind of sailing we had, the beer at the dock is always good!

This is a great vacation for us for many reasons part of which there is no need to get on an airplane. The drive itself is pretty spectacular too. Another great thing about Club Med...the food is absolutely super.

90. When it's too windy to sail Filmed 23 June 2024. Sometimes, you don't need to see the forecast. When you see these guys, you know there is big wind. Sure enough, by mid morning, we were already seeing 30 knot gusts...way too much for us to sail. Kite surfing sure looks like a lot of fun. Fun to watch too. What to do on a no-sail day? Bake cookies! In addition to big wind that day, we also h...

We saw some of that here in the Eastern Townships. On our property, a wood pile was blown over and this tree split. 3 weeks later, the path was fixed.

We are heading there in a couple of weeks and are also based in Montreal. Thanks for the video looking forward to it.
Looks more like a She, which is extra odd because only the males are extra teritorial, it seems that the situations are affecting the females too
I don’t know much about grouse, but, perhaps he is guarding a nest?
Where did you find the window gasket?
Found it on steelerubber dot com. Steele Rubber Products is the full company name. The gasket is a bit stiff and not ideal for a tight radius. But it worked.
@@markusandgreta4941 Thanks!
Thank you for sharing your sailing experiences on TH-cam. They are truly informative and entertaining! It was an honest and fun mini-documentary of your fun vacation. I did not know about the Key Lime Sailing Club and Cottages until yesterday. And the fact that they offer a complimentary Catalina 22? That is simply marvelous! I will definitely be planning a trip to Key Largo, partly on the strength of your video! Best to you, Markus and Greta! May you continue to sail to fair winds and adventure!
I should check the comments section more often...you have left a wonderful comment. Thanks so much! We wish you equally good times.
Wrong clamps you want spring clamps ?
The C-22 is a standard fractional rig. It gets the majority of it's power from the main sail. When getting too much weather helm, it is best to take in a reef. Attempts to combat weather helm by reducing the amount of jib you have "reefed" in are seldom productive. A roller furling system makes for a handy way to deploy or store a foresail but not very good at "reefing". Sailors who'd like to have the ability to actually have a "reefing" jib can turn to sailmakers that build the reefing sail by way of a foam luff that take out the belly in a reefing jib. By looking at your video, you may get better performance in your rig by taking the main down a reef point in the main and leaving the jib where it sits. You might just get a faster, flatter ride. Other than that, It sure looks looks like fun!
It was my understanding that the main sail is mainly for balance and power comes from the Headsail. Flatten the sails and let out the main sheet just slightly to stop the heel.
I always thought those red and white flags meant “Hey everybody, come speed over here and see what we’re doing!” At least that’s what it always felt like when we flew one.
Looks like fun. Was the rental expensive?
The boat was free. Included with the cottage rental.

Hey Markus! That’s insane how fast that burnt up, crazy. Was nice meeting you at the moose!
Hi Samantha! Hi Cody! It was great to meet you guys. Really enjoyed our evenings at the moose. If/when you go back, let me know...I owe you a beer!
Thank goodness nobody was hurt
I've got fire extinguishers on every machine...
Even if we had one, the source was behind the seat under the cargo area. Not sure if we would have had the nerve or time for that kind of pinpoint accuracy.
Wow…I wonder if this was caused by the exhaust… I’m surprised the hill didn’t have an extinguisher on board… Glad you’re ok captain!!
We were ok, Thank you! We think it was electrical but heat was a contributing factor for sure. We had a full load going uphill. That engine was hot. Over 7000 RPM most of the way. Not sure if an extinguisher would have helped. Judging from what I saw, none of them had much effect.
Omg that’s just so awful. Can’t believe the short time it took for the whole thing. to incinerate. And NO food delivery. Nobody got hurt so glad for that. What an experience. Once is enough. So so so sorry.😢😢😢
It was wild. And all before lunch.
I'm liking this boat. A lot of boat for just 22 feet!
The Catalina 22 really impressed us. Easy to handle go anywhere.
I tapped a few trees(8 taps) this year just to try it out(SE Wisconsin). When temps are right I have been getting 15-25 gallons a day. Boiling down raw sap takes soooooo long. Am just using a 60k btu burner with a large stock pot. At such small scale it makes no sense to build and RO or build a wood burner. It all seems so crazy, but fun. Thanks for vid.
Yes, it is a lot of work. But fun. Nothing tastes as good as your own syrup from your own trees. The sap is pretty good too!
Vacationed there twice. Was maybe 15 years ago. Loved it both times and hope to go back if Ever live close enough again. Paul didn’t have any staff that knew much about sailboats. He upgraded me to the Captain’s cabin and gave me two free nights for re-rigging the boats so they were easier to sail.
Thanks for sharing your story. Yes, we are also talking about going back.
Let the travelor all of the way down, let your jib out (totally unfurl) pull on some vang, put on some outhaul and downhaul, then enjoy a fast, flat sail with neutral helm. You shouldn't feel anything but a light pull on the tiller in 12 -18 knots. In other words, flatten your sails. Feather up ever so slightly just ahead of the puffs, then drop right back down to your course...assuming you're on a beat. Any time you're off the wind, head down in the puffs and let it push you up to speed on a flat hull, head up slightly in the lulls. Hope some of that helps. It's great to see you're having fun! Cheers to Catalina 22's.
We are still learning and that does help. We love our time on the water.
Excellent. Glad to hear it. You two are great sports. Sorry if I got carried away above. The sign of a good teacher is knowing when to keep quiet. Failed that test myself obviously.
Stumbled acrossed your video... We have a cottage reserved at KLSC for this march. So excited to get some salt water sailing under our belts. We sail our '77 O'Day 25 on a central new York lake. Hoping to transition to a warmer climate liveaboard during these long NY winters. Love the preview!
You will enjoy KLSC, the Catalina 22 and the Caribbean quality of the water. Keep having summer fun on your O'Day!
Our C-22 handled great in a blow with the mainsail reefed. This also eases weather helm.
Indeed. We try to set sails per forecast, but sometimes you get a bit more...
So so proud of you then and now. I do remember this. Just spectacular and well done. Congratulations to all of you again so well done. What an achievement 💕💕💕
I wanna do the same but will modify hanger ends to hold onto storage box handholds.
Good idea!
Yay!
❤️❤️❤️❤️ those little Catalina's can fly. Keep having fun.
I was gonna do this in June. But work go too busy. Next April!
I hear ya. Still, now you have something to look forward to.
still go the cat 22?
The Catalina 22 was a rental.
hello, I follow your channel, could you explain how you raise and lower the mast please, I want to learn how to do it alone
I would love to help you, but we never had to do this. If we ever do, I will film it!
You can connect the main sheet to the jib halyard and either forestay or trailer. You can very easily put the mast on your shoulder then pull the sheet with one hand and guide the mast with the other. I’ve done it lots of times.
I have had an eye on the Key Lime Sailing Club for awhile, thought about it this year. We went to visit relatives in Boca Raton instead. Our hotel was twice the price of KLSC. Luxury but no sailing included! This seems like a good deal even if the cottages look a bit dated. Looking forward to trying this out, hope they did some maintenance during the pandemic!
The cottages are dated but clean, which is what matters most to us. I did make a snide remark about the Catalina needing repairs, but it was all minor stuff. The outboard was pretty new and we never had any issues. We are going back.
@@markusandgreta4941 Thanks. I do hope to get there in the near future.
Hello, what app is that?
We use Navionics.
@@markusandgreta4941 thank you 🙏
keep the videos coming
Thanks for the encouragement!
Moving the genoa sheet blocks forward, especially when the genoa is partially furled, will relieve some of that helm pressure making the boat round up. You won't need to crank the rudder so far over to hold the nose down, and the boat will be overall more manageable in a gust like that or in a blow. Hope it helps. Fair winds.
Thanks for the tip. We are still learning!
One of the huge flaws in the tanzer 8 was the windows just above the rub rail. They go completely underwater on a reach, my gf looked up at me from below, when we first got her and said the windows are under water. I replaced the windows (with blue lexan, bullet proof) and used marine caulking too seal them. So funny too think about, i was cool as a cucumber back then. Yellow better colour.
I've got a Catalina 22 and I never thought about putting my short kayaks inside for transport. Thank you very much for that.
5 knots is ideal? Ah well so enjoyable.
Hey, the boat doesnt have stanchions or a saftey line, were they an option? Love the tanzers btw, not great, but they actually are.
It did come with stanchions but they are a false sense of security and a hindrance to getting on and off the boat. I removed them. BUT, I am thinking of putting them back simply because it allows for a better way to route the furler line.
@@markusandgreta4941 they look nice, I was going too replace mine with stainless steel tapered with a loop? on each to snap the bumpers on. Also would of liked too move the mast rigging off the deck and unto the hull. The hunters with no aft rigging looked ideal, a bigger main. But ...... Anyways love the tanzers, abit tender but they perform nice underway and are a real pleasure in moderate weather, responsive with quick acceleration.
Really liked my tanzer 8, so much that the 8.5 was going to be my next boat. Lots of room, sea worthy.
fascinating to watch. thanks for sharing
Glad you enjoyed it.

Great video. Was most of the ailing with the keel up ? Curious if have amps or some other areas that sailed too - We are thinking of doing this same vacation next year but wondering if will not be good for sailing as so shallow.
We had the keel about half way down most of the time...no problems. The Catalina 22 was perfect for the area that we were allowed to sail in.
Nice rail dip at 5:07! :)
Lots of fun!
Great example of weather helm in the gusts. Looks like a lot of fun.
