SUPERMAN by GRANT MORRISON — The New 52 Action Comics Run
Host Anthony Desiato and guest Mike Sangregorio dig once more into writer Grant Morrison's New 52-era ACTION COMICS run with artists Rags Morales, Brad Walker, and others. They unpack the stripped-down, unrestrained version of the character, Vyndktvx's time-bending assault across Superman's timeline, the role the Kents (and their deaths) serve, and why - as with all Morrison works - this one benefits from a patient read.

This is awesome thank you for this
Great conversation! Death of Superman has always been my favorite comic, and it's probably the one that made me into a huge Superman fan. I always love seeing the different adaptations.
Where can I watch this online? please let me know ASAP. Thanks!
Looking forward to watching the live performance. Enjoyed this episode, Anthony!
I think Superman was right to go after Lex since Lex in the future did menace both Earth and Lexor. Plus Superman has done kind acts towards Lex with Lex putting his hate of Superman above all else. There were follow-up stories to the destruction of Lexor in the Superman titles particularly in Superman Issue 386. Lex offers a different physical fight than other Superman villains not because of his strength but because of his inventions that either boost him or hinder Superman with Superman having to outthink Lex. If you read the fights between Superman and Lex they get really creative with multiple occasions of Lex not even using Kryptonite to fight Superman. Earth's greatest criminal Lex Luthor should be able to go toe to toe with Superman.
First, LOVE THE PODCAST! Always get a smile on my face when I see there us a new episode on apple podcasts. Just two quick comments: first, while I get the whole “super stalker” thing, I never saw that until you guys pointed it out, for me it looked like Superman looking to make sure that the Richard was what SHE WANTED and that she was happy there, especially because he leaves the moment he hears he say the didn’t love him. Secondly, I personally interpret the memory wiping kiss as more of a Spider-Man: No Way Home situation where Lois still remembered the night at the fortress, but not that Supes was Clark, now Lois still asks what the news was(implying she forgot about the Zod event), but you could just chalk that up to her thinking os Supes as clark at that point
@501st_studios Thanks for sharing your take & for the kind words! So glad you enjoy the podcast.
First time viewer here. I love that you're breaking down a Superman episode not only in a "Superman" way (the characters, the plot, the situations, comic book references, etc.), but in a showbiz way as well; the connections to the radio show, the actors in other vehicles (Casablanca, Maltese Falcon), the film noir overtones, lingo and habits of the time, etc.. the "Ben Mankewicz/TCM" treatment. I ran short on time and couldn't finish watching in my first sitting, but I'll be back to finish up later. Good stuff, guys.👍
How is zack doing😢
I don't really see Silver Age Superman as removed/detached from humanity. I see him as a human doing human stuff but to an extraordinary degree. An over the top man doing over the top things in an over the top world. Superman is super sentimental and feels super loneliness Man-Cave/Secret Hideout = Fortress of Solitude Person makes last will and testament = Superman has gifts for friends in case of his death Spare Key hidden under doormat = Giant Heavy Fortress Key Painting in spare time = Superman paints alien landscape Guy tinkers in garage = Superman does science experiments Barn of Animals/Pets = Interplanetary Zoo in the Fortress Person writes Diary entries in secret code = Superman engraves Diary Entries with powers in Kryptonese Person plays chess against computer = Superman plays chess against robot Friends have Prank War/Murder Mystery = Batman and Superman scare each other Immigrant returns and reconnects to the land of his birth = Superman returns to Krypton Childhood friendships fall apart = Superman and Lex Pictures of loved ones = Superman's mannequins/wax models of his friends
Writing this only 39 minutes in, but: I thinknthat when Clark says "take me home," he is referring to what Krypto considers home-the Fortress. I don't think Krypto usually stays in Clark's Metropolis apartment, but I could be wrong?
I love the everything about the finally except for Lois' cancer coming back and the reveal of Clark kent being superman was done alittle better than what Bendis did. I guess the closest to a realistic take on the world knowing Clark’s secret is smallville's season 8 episode.
Anthony, another great episode. Your guest, Daniel Sanchez, blew my mind with his wonderfully insightful critiques of "Around the world with Superman". Particularly a Christmas story? What a beautiful and spot on analysis of this classic episode. And, yes, every character shines in this outing. The scene where Clark has to convince little Ann that Superman is real is magical. It strikes an empathetic cord that gets to the core of Superman. He is a friend, a mentor, and non-judgmental when you need someone to listen. As for breaking with tradition, it's one of the few episodes (along with "Recue", Panic in the Sky", Superman on Earth", and maybe "Jungle Devil"?) that does not feature a villain(s). A welcomed change of pace. Speed of travel around the world caring a mortal? Well, decades later John Byrne tackled this predicament with establishing Superman's protective aura that extends outward from his body and would envelope those humans he was caring in flight. But I've got nothing for not be able to see things at such high velocities. And, what would be Superman's answer be (in this iteration of the character) to Ann's question? I suspect it would be something along these lines: "Just to help people, dear. It's something we can all do." And you made me laugh out loud once again with yet another allusion to Superman's mountain chalet for the wayward. Sorry for the long post this time, but this episode holds a special place in my heart. It's life-affirming and hopeful. And isn't that what Superman is all about? A blessed Christmas to you and your family, Anthony. And peace, health and prosperity in the New Year!
@@JosephPeluso-ce4tm Thanks so much for the kind words & all the support. Happy Holidays to you as well!
Great as superboy
I think this is one of the most intentionally comedic episodes of the series. Most of the light humor is supplied by Sterling Holloway--and of course--George Reeves. And why wouldn't eccentric Uncle Oscar set his sights on developing "flavored stamp glue"? He clearly has a couple of screws loose, but he's such a lovable character that we completely buy into what he's selling. And even as a kid, I knew Superman didn't want to drink that explosive brew again at the end of the episode. Sure The Man of Steel has a cast-iron stomach, but even he can get a case of agita. No pressure, Anthony, but I'm looking forward to your reaction to "Around the World With Superman". All these years later, it's still some of the best live-action Superman ever filmed.
I'm writing this comment only 42 minutes in, so if I sound like an idiot, that's why lol. It's funny, because I really would ideally prefer that Clark-across various official media-kill more often, but I actually really like that he doesn't kill Doomsday like he normally does. He loses-he hits a wall, and that's it for him. That's life, hon. But I think what works best is that the way the series *out does* its big Action Hero Death is by going realer and smaller. I feel like the series really nailed that dread one feels when they begin facing their mortality through age and illness. I have chronic depression (shocking, I know), so Clark and Lois' health issues and aging really hit home for me in that respect, especially as I near middle age in a few years. I personally would have done a lot of stuff differently throughout the season, but for "rolling with the punches," I felt like the crew did a better job than I was expecting. Can't bring back the full main cast? Bring in other townspeople for supporting roles. Hell, I thought they used more special effects shots than they needed to in the less important episodes. I would've cut them to transfer that money to the finale lol. One thing I really liked was how the first fight with Doomsday was apparently this 24-48 hour non-stop battle across the solar system. That is *the* coolest thing any Superman or American superhero film has ever done for a fight. I just wish they had had another three or four minutes worth of shots to flesh the fight out more with more choreography and showing an arc of Clark fearing Doomsday and then reaolving to face his fear head-on. Alas, punches, rolling, et cetera.
@@JulieYBM Appreciate your perspective! I’m glad you enjoyed those aspects more than I did, and I do suspect my feelings will improve with time and another viewing of the season.
When I was a kid in the 60's watching "Adventures of Superman", I never saw the scene of Supes lifting up the pyramid. Apparently it was always cut to make room for another commercial. It wasn't until the 80's, with the holiday specials hosted by Jack Larsen, that I first saw this amazing Superman feat. There were also similar cuts from seasons one and two episodes that didn't get restored until 80's. Thankfully this was finally rectified with the 2006 DVD set. Oh, thanks for opening my eyes about Whitlock not being such an upstanding citizen. This is my favorite podcast. Thanks again, Anthony
@@JosephPeluso-ce4tm I appreciate the kind words & all of your continued support. Glad to hear you eventually got to see that scene - it was a real standout!
Thoroughly enjoyed this episode!
Of the four, this movie was the only one I watched as a child when it premiered in theaters. Listening brought back lots of memories. Great episode, as always, Anthony!
@@Delilah.Elizabeth That’s great to hear. Thanks so much!
The whole Lois and Clark vs giving up his powers - with the mom on this too😂. I saw this when it came out in theaters. I was 5yrs old. Even as a little 5-year-old girl, I never understood why Lois was in love with Superman. Based on what? I understood how Clark was able to fall in love with her (not why😅). Superman II made me not like Lois at all. Even as a kid, I had a huge crush on Superman, but I adored Clark. I have never understood her rationale. And her leaving Clark to near freeze to death to hitch a ride back to the fortress after the diner solidified my dislike of her😂. It has been so refreshing having the newer iterations of Lois actually fall for Clark, moreso than Superman. Great discussion
great episode, this movie deserves a bit more love.
Its not just a comic book, its a piece of a puzzle that when assembled can build an entire multiverse.
One of my favorite of the whole series. Just for its sheer lunacy, and crazy plot. Its easy to see how Jimmy was the Steve Urkel of his day. Poor Jimmy was so unreliable mo one ever believed him. Even though Jimmy didn't really joke around about this kind of stuff. 9.0 out of 10
Is this the only eoisode where Superman uses super breath?
@@kevinmadden1645 I haven’t been keeping a tally, but off the top of my head, I know he just used it a few episodes ago in “Perry White’s Scoop” to blow out the fire in the train at the end.
He used his super breath at the end of the episode "The Face and the Voice" when he blew the gas tank fire on the armored car.
Like you guest, this episode creeped me out as a kid. Those eyeball paintings were downright scary to an eight-year-old. And it being a "Jimmy" episode made it all the more enjoyable. Written by the great Jackson Gillis, it was a solid mystery for a young audience to chew on with multiple head-scratching moments. The 'bus stop" sequence with the three mysterious characters is one of the finest scenes in the entire series. It conveys confusion--and dread--for the befuddled Jimmy, while simultaneously dishing out enough comedy tp play to Jack Larsen's acting chops. And, Anthony, please find the time to watch "Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein". Not only a great comedy, but it is one of the finest Universal Monster movies of that period. I'm sure you will enjoy it. And in the spirit of nitpicking: We never question the destruction Superman incurs when smashing through a wall. But crashing through a basement wall--a possible load-bearing wall--might that not have literally brought the house down?
@@JosephPeluso-ce4tm Thanks for sharing your experience with the episode (and the movie recommendation). And yes, a fair architectural point about the wall-smashing!
"Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein" will be broadcast on Me-Tv this Saturday night (November 23) at 8:00 EDT.
As a Kid, I did not care for this episode because of its distinct lack of action. As an adult, I grew to appreciate it for the comedy and silliness that mirrored the comics of that era. Re the sandwich controversy: If we have meatball heroes, and sausage and pepper sandwiches, why not a hamburger sandwich? The two best scenes in the episode: Jimmy running behind Superman when Perry goes to strangle him, and Perry (for a split second) contemplating tossing Jimmy out the window near the end of the episode. And Anthony, those were the "boy" mayor and chief of police at the end who came into the office to cuff the criminals. One of them even remark about how "adults" make so much out of things. I guess "boys" looked older in the fifties? Must have been the suits and the short hair.
@@JosephPeluso-ce4tm I went back and rewatched the end, and you’re right, they are the “boy” mayor & police chief. They do not look like boys at ALL! 😂 And fair point about meatball heroes. Thanks for listening & sharing your take!
Thoroughly enjoyed this. Growing up in the late 70s and 80s, Christopher Reeve was my first Superman; his portrayal and the film itself will always have a very special place in my heart. No matter how many times I watch it, Superman: The Movie just takes my breath away. Every time I watch it, it’s like the first time for me. Thank you for sharing! ❤💙
@@Delilah.Elizabeth Thanks for sharing your experience & for the kind words! I appreciate you listening. So glad you enjoyed.
Awesome work
@@StillOnly25c Thanks!
It was a way to keep all their character copyrights by putting literally any and everyone in it. I didn't find them dull jus incoherent with all the skipping around thru the timeline in both the first movies the last one is what saved it for me with the Constantine tie in explaining it finally made it make sense
I bought the Blu Ray 3 disc set. I still haven’t watched it
@@StillOnly25c Good luck!
I enjoyed it enough because of my love for these characters but God knows there was no story here. It's just a series of events. You could tell there were other movies they wanted to make, and now with the Gunn reboot, won't get the chance. So they crammed every idea they had into these 3 films.
As a kid this was always one of my favorite episodes because of the two fight scenes. I love Clark's frustration at the end of his fight as he tries to change into Superman. "Stuperman where are you?!" Always cracked me up. As for the guests stars this episode, Peter Whitney was an excellent character actor for that period and had some great roles on Gunsmoke.
@@JosephPeluso-ce4tm The fights were thrilling to watch as an adult, so I can imagine how you felt as a kid!
This episode was always one of my least favorites of the entire series. The regular stable of writers must have been on vacation when this assignment was handed out. And, yes, the scene in the park with half the population Metropolis hiding behind a couple of scrawny bushes, really does stretch credulity. On a positive note, it is always a treat to see the fine character actor Pierre Watkin in any role. And Anthony, Pierre and Noel get some screen time together in the season six episode, "The Last Knight", where Lois (and Jimmy, of course) are abducted by Sir Lancelot, and his buddies. Pierre plays the role of Sir Lancelot. What? How? No spoilers, you have to get all the way to season six to find out.
I genuinely think we need a Trials Of Smallville box set, as it’s the perfect antidote to the inevitable post-binge withdrawal.
Absolutely Awesome
I really like Superman 3, 😂
@@kylekullin2520You’re in luck, then, because we’re doing a standalone episode devoted to it very soon! We’ll be going through each of the Reeve movies one at a time starting in just over two weeks.
@@AnthonyDesiato alright 😎
I LOVE THIS SHOW
Another enjoyable listen, Anthony. If I may, a couple of notes on "Perry White's Scoop": This is a rare episode where we don't see Superman flying through the air. Robert Wilke (Bingham) was in a slew of "B" westerns in the in the 40's and 50's (usually as a heavy), and was also in "High Noon" and "The Magnificent Seven". He also portrayed Wild Bill Hickok in and early episode of "Gunsmoke". And was there something else going on in that apartment overlooking the athletic club besides spying? Maria seems awfully fond of Max at one point? Kind of suggestive for a 50's kids show? With her husband being recently dead and all. Reminds me of Ace and Connie in season one's "The Stolen Costume". Or am I reading too much into this?
@@JosephPeluso-ce4tm Thanks for listening & sharing your insight! That’s a fascinating observation about something romantic brewing between those two. I can’t say I clocked that specifically, but you might be on to something!
I loved listening to all of these. Thank you for the passion and hard work!!!
@@NowLetsBeHonest Thanks so much! I appreciate the kind words & am glad you enjoyed.
I've enjoyed all of your podcast, from the triangle era being one of my favorite podcast from you but I think this Smallville series legit has been my absolute favorite from you. It's been extremely good.
@@farsendor Thank you very much! I appreciate it. These have really been some of my all-time favorite episodes to record, and it means a lot that you’ve enjoyed them so much.
Glad Chloe and Clark never really got into anything a romance relationship. She was just good as a friend or even a sister like figure.
This episode has always been my favorite "Jimmy" episode. Jack Larsen was a talented actor with a wonderful sense of comedic timing. And once the episodes enter the color years, Jack gets even more moments to shine as Jimmy Olsen having "fun" in the face of constant danger. One that comes instantly to mind is a scene in the sixth season episode, "The Perils of Superman", where Jimmy attempts to keep a disabled car on a curving mountain road. It was scary and funny, thanks to Jack's acting abilities.
54:34 lol hilarious interaction
Once again Henderson arrives at the scene of the crime before Superman! And in effect Superman was in the neighborhood! How far could Rollo and Crackers have run in such a short span of time before Clark changed to Superman? And, Anthony, you are not reading to much into the death scene. Because my Superman, then and now, would hang his head with sadness and contrition over Cracker's death. And I firmly believe that was all George.
What makes the episode even more exciting is that those original home audiences also didn't know if this version of Superman was powerful enough to take on such a task and come away unaffected.
In a way, the plot is similar to that seen in SUPERMAN II...Superman is disabled while a major threat bears down, and time is running out....
I'm just glad we got to see up to season 10 and it didn't end earlier 5-8
This was a brilliant deep dive! Feels much more of a tragedy when viewing Lex’s journey from a wider perspective.
@@Dadmagic Thanks so much! Really appreciate that. Definitely fascinating to rewatch & discuss from that POV!
I think Clark is laughing at Jack Larson getting drenched as Jimmy... There exists behind the scenes. Bloopers and practical jokes on the set of TAOS Involving the cast especially George and Jack sucb as skipping out of a phone booth together throw. Ing things at one another etc If anyone saw them , they would know how much fun and Practical joking occurred behind the scenes of TAOS. I know. These exist because I have seen them several times shown by private collectors out in California. LOL... ?You're aware that George Reeves was involved with multiple charities for children , including summer camps, City of Hope for childhood cancer, and Myesthenia Gravis Through Whitney Ellsworth whose wife got George involved with the charity. So not surprising that they had an episode like this It feels somewhat contrived but very justified..
Yeah Lana becoming krypto girl is what made Clark lose Lana...would he still be with her if that didnt happen?
