Weekend Recap: Dylan Harper’s Heroics, Jeremiah Fears Rising, and Johni Broome’s Dominance
In the latest episode of the Locked On NBA Big Board podcast, hosts Rafael Barlowe and James Barlowe break down the standout performances from the weekend in college basketball. The episode kicks off with an in-depth discussion of Dylan Harper, who delivered a game-winning shot against Seton Hall in another strong performance. In the second segment, the spotlight shifts to his teammate Ace Bailey, who impressed with an efficient first half but struggled from the free-throw line.
Later, Rafael offers a heartfelt apology to James for previously questioning his ranking of Oklahoma freshman Jeremiah Fears at No. 7 on his most recent Big Board. After watching Fears’ recent play, Rafael admits he now sees why James has him as a top-10 prospect.
The hosts then pivot to Auburn’s Johni Broome, who put on a dominant display against Ohio State with a 21-point, 20-rebound performance. In the following segment, they discuss Liam McNeeley’s career-high 26-point effort in UConn’s big win over Gonzaga. Finally, the episode concludes with a breakdown of Illinois freshman Kasparas Jakucionis, who had a solid outing in Illinois’ loss to Tennessee. Despite an off-shooting night, Rafael and James highlight Jakucionis’ ability to still leave an impact on the game.

Kasper was just gassed in the 2nd half. He played the entire half and was the only player who could create a shot. He needs to clean up the TO's, but I'm not overly concerned with them. The level of offense he's creating while playing next to a guy like Boswell (good defender, but completely awful offensive player) is impressive.

Malique Lewis is easily my biggest sleeper in my book, he's exactly what teams want out of a role-playing wing. Good size, plays with physicality as a finisher, good defender, super underrated as a passer, unselfish, competitive and energetic on the glass, great understanding of spacing, efficient guy who doesn't try to do too much, and while he's not a shooter per se he's capable of hitting open threes and his mechanics look solid. On top of that he's been playing consistent minutes professionally for the last 3 years in Spain, the G-League, and Australia.

Can you guys start tracking at the beginning of each new season players whom you believe has put themselves in a “good position” program/ system/ coaching to have an opportunity to look good??? Maybe even create a criterion for this?!! It feels like so many top recruits end up at high notoriety (Duke, Kentucky, Kansas) programs only to get buried on benches if they don’t look great from the beginning. These high profile programs also get such great recruiting classes each year that these recruits that struggle early have very little investment in their continued growth because the school can go out and get someone better the very next year. I also think in this era of NIL and the transfer portal that young athletes need more information and guidance into what it means to select a great opportunity for YOU, not just something that looks great. The Harper/ Bailey combination at Rutgers is a great example of going to a great situation.

It's Kasparas and Harper. I love Demin, but I'm not convinced he's a lead handler at the NBA level.

Jump shot consistency with Demin will be the swing skill at the next level. If he can consistently hit from NBA three, he's a top 5 talent. His passing and court vision are already exceptional. The ball handling concerns IMO are a reflection of his need to get stronger in the weight room rather than a skill issue.

26:21 - HUGE Nets' fan here. I like how you defined your terms earlier in the video. We have several combo-Guards, or at best, secondary ball-handlers. None of them fit the role of primary ball-handler. Give me the one that'll project to cast doubt in the minds of defenders. Between the offense that Jordi Fernandez runs and the addition of other talent, the Nets figure out the best fit

@jamesbarlowe759 harden not a point guard is ball hog I will give you fox bust he is elite Brunson is a average pg who plays hard. Cal point run the nba look at the nba roster. I know a lot of people argue in favor of going to a smaller school so you can get the ball more but if you’re a true point guard, I think that’s a terrible idea. If Demin goes to a blue blood, he would be way better than what he’s showing. You can be a great passer but when guys can’t make shots or finish, it means nothing.

Or they may play him out of position because the school has a 6’1 PG that can only play PG. For example Baylor with VJ Edgecombe and Keyonte George.

@@LockedOnNBABigBoard Thank you! I was just going to say this… VJ should have gone to a school that would have played him alongside a “table setting” PG and allowed him to operate as a playmaker and shot creator in high leverage situations working through the mistakes much like Cooper Flagg is getting to at Duke. Shout out Maluach who also should have gone somewhere that was going to allow him to play his full game and work through the growing pains along the way.
