Bruce on Bikes

Hi, I'm Dan Bruce and I love mountain biking. Now I just need to actually get good at it...
Reviving my 20 year old Cannondale with new MTB parts
I bought this Cannondale Caffeine XL roughly twenty years ago. I never was a fan of the 3x drivetrain. What do you think of the parts I put on this?

12 Year Old Jumps Better Than Me - First Time Jump Line at the Bike Park
มุมมอง 1.9K5 หลายเดือนก่อน
We went to the bike park "Wexltrails" again and my son tried out the Jump Line for the first time. He was already familiar with jumping a little on the Flow Line and he is very safe on the bike, so we decided to go for it.
Do NOT Wrap Your Bike, Unless... (My Frame Protection Results)

So I decided to protect my new bike with some wrap by Ridewrap. Here's what went wrong and why you might be better off not doing it yourself. Sorry for the bad audio, I just had my phone with me.

Anninger Trail (blue) - Anninger Adventure 3/3

I spent a few hours on the Anninger in Mödling, a town close to Austria's capital Vienna. While there, I rode three trails: Krauste Linde, Husarentempel (red variant) and Anninger Trail. For next time, I'm going to reduce the image stabilization a bit, it really takes away the sense of speed.

Why are you watching a middle aged mountain bike beginner bumble down the Flow Line at Wexltrails in Austria? Go out there and ride!
hell yeah
A sauguads Englisch für an Österreicha👍, gfreit mi das doch Landsmänna gibt wos Englisch kinnan🫡 Schönes Rad🤘
CUES just do that (slow shifting). It's designed to do that, so it makes the shift in the proper ramp, nothing to worry about (although it could feel weird to some)
Besides myself you are the only other one who works on bikes in their home livingspace. More people would maintain their bikes (my opinion) but they see here on YT people with "Bike workshop" rooms with big tool cabinets and pegboards . When I do work with Lubes and solvents I put A tarp over my carpeting.
Yep, when I bled my brakes on my Canyon Spectral a few weeks ago, I also used a tarp to prevent nastiness. Worked great. I live in an apartment, I don't have a shed or garage or any other possibility to have something like a workshop environment. But I still want to work on my bike, so I found a way.
That’s a fine bike. Was my dream bike when I was a kid. Condition is immaculate too!
Thanks! I tried to keep it in good shape over the years. Only thing I had to replace before the swap were rear tire, chain and brake pads.
€9 for a maxxis ardent is bargain. It's a good all-rounder tyre. Nice job on the bike
I feel your pain with the glasses. Next step varifocals
OK , for whatever reason TH-cam's wonderful filters deleted my original post. Great job on updating your Caffeine. I have many older Cannondale bikes, only one still remains a 3x setup. It's my 1992 M700 that I have had since new. It was orginally a 3 x 7 but has now been upgraded to a 2005 ish Deore LX M580 3x9 groupset, it also has Magura HS-33R hydraulic rim brakes too. The rest of my USA made Cannondale's either have a Lefty or a Headshok and are converted to a 1x setup of either 11 or 12 speed. I know the trials and tribulations of finding a stem for one so I keep my eyes peeled on Ebay as well as other places selling used Cannondales To help you on your quest for a shorter stem, Reverse Components makes a 60mm one that fits the Headshok forks. In Europe the only place I know that has them in stock is Dr. Cannondale out of Germany. It should be what you are looking for from what you said in the video. Good luck and good job on the bike.
I have to tip my hat too you - bike maintenance inside the house and no oil/grease on you but more importantly your rug 😂
weeeeeeell, not exactly. There were unfortunately some grease stains on the rug. But less than probably could have been 😅
I am all about restomoding old bikes. I suppose that all who watched it along with the author knows Rob and his Old Shovel channel. If not, I highly recommend. As for the build, cheap cranks and chainrings from ali usually don't have torque markings on them. In this case you can resort to Shimano's standard of 12-13 nm for the chainring bolts. But do apply this only if yoy use steel bolts. Id you use these cheap colorful ones from ali you will strip the thread as they are of softer aluminium and they are about 1 mm shorter than the steel ones so there is less thread that is engaged when they are tightened.
I’ve been rebuilding bikes this winter and I’ve just been leaving my glasses off…I’m getting nearsighted too. It sucks lol
Your '06 Cannondale would look Great with 7050 aluminum Thomson Elite riser bars, a 7000 series aluminum X4 Thomson stem; and Thomson 7000 series aluminum Thomson Elite post😁🤙🤙. These are also what I'm hoping🤞 to put on my 2005/06 Trek🤘🤘. I just learned a few weeks ago of Deity. They have 7075 T73 aluminum riser bars that weigh just under 300g for a bit cheaper than the Thomson risers. The Thomson riser bars range from 💰154.00-💰180.00🍁 before tax, and the Deity 7075 risers are 💰119.00- 💰124.00🍁 before tax🤙🤙.
I'm planning/hoping🤞on putting M8000 XT components on a mid 2000s Trek, I know rather cr😁zy. So far, I've ordered the L shifter, I still want front shifting🤙🤙. My question is, is there anything I can do to put the M8000 XT Boost 2X crank on this 2005/06 Trek? There doesn't seem to be many stores online offering the regular M8000 XT 2X crank.
I forgot that modern bikes have slightly wider axles. I was also planning on upgrading my WTB 6061 aluminum wheels to Mavic Crossride (💰500.00🍁). I'm not sure if this rather old wheelset would make up the difference in axle width. Thanks.
Great video and about your English, your English is way better than most Englishmen. I am not sure about this but I thing your front chain ring is on the incorrect side. Should it not be mounted on the outside of the crank. Just asking.
When you're retrofitting a crank spider designed for 3 chainrings with just 1 chainring, you just put it whichever side gives the best chainline.
LG stuff feels "sluggis" bc of the ramps. It is made to smooth the shifting underload (it's primary designed to use with mid motor ebikes). Shifting under load is where the system shines. Other than that, make sure you adjusted the b tension accordingly the cassette and the chain is directional.
I don't understand why 1x 🙄🤷 I will never go to 1x🤣 3x or 2x is perfect 😉 I have 3x on trek ex 8 2012 and that's perfect for that bike and rides in my country, plenty of hill's trails ect. Btw nice build🤟
I forgot to.mention things like pedals ect with threads grease the threads so there so much easier to undo later down the line as you can a build up it's called carlblockic ie aluminium to steel ect you get a build and there a right pain to undo if don't grease the threads.
Nice bud and you english is great better than mine and I'm english lol 😊 all the best
Wow! It's a Headshock ULTRA FATTY DLR. I also have a Caffeine F3 that was released in 2006. Sadly, the stem that fits the Headshock 1.56 inch steerer tube is no longer available on the planet. It has been out of stock in all online shops in various countries for 6 months. The only solution is to drop the "Headshock" and put a regular fork on it... but that would destroy the identity of this bike. At least I can use 27.5 inch wheels.
Oh, I could put 27.5s on this? I haven't tried yet, still on 26 inch wheels. No way that I relace the Headshok with a normal fork. As you said, it would destroy the bike's identity.
Yes, my Cannondale with 2" wide "Continental Contact Urban" tires on 27.5" wheels for city riding. I keep the front tires air pressure at 58psi, because if it goes over 60psi it will interfere with the shock valve located under the fork. If you want gravel tires, 1.95" wide "Panaracer Gravel King" is also available. I think the "Continental Speed King (2" wide)" maybe available if I keep the pressure in the front tires air pressure at 40-45psi. That seems like the best compromise to maintain the Cannondale identity.
@@mustler0 Thanks, I'll look into it.
Nice effort but if your son want to ride in a tough terrain you should get him a dropper seat post. I think for this diameter an inverted dt Swiss one might be a good idea. Yes a 6cm stem would be a good upgrade for modern XC too.
Thanks for the suggestion! It would have to be a dropper with external cable routing, there's no internal routing whatsoever on this bike.
@@BruceOnBikes Get a KS E10, no cable, just a lever under the seat. Comes in 27.2 as well.
Hey! Your new bars have a backsweep and a rise, and they should be mounted as you showed on 3:34, like logos watching forward not upwards, otherwise bars are leaning downwards and might cause discomfort to the rider. But everything's personal preference, and if you like it, then ride it! Nice video!
Fun video. Your English is amazing. My wife would kill me if I did bike mechanics in the livingroom!
Thanks! Yeah, I might have put some old grease stains onto that colorful carpet... Had to clean really thoroughly to keep the family peace 😅
@@BruceOnBikes 😅👍
It's nice of you to go out on a trail in the Winter. I myself live in Vienna, and unfortunately there are not so many trails to ride because of the flat area, but I still go out almost every day to do a gravel ride with my mountainbike, but I get cold hands in about 2 hours ride, then I have to sprint to home 😅
Yeah, keeping the fingers from freezing is a tough one. Gloves too thick -> no feel. Gloves too thin -> also no feel, but later ;)
I would have tought more people would come from your other channel, however what you are foing is very cool! Take care!
Is there a way of sorting this ? Just got my new canyon and it’s making the exact same noise
Haven't done anything to it since the bike performs great. I managed to "unsqueak" the brakes of my former bike with something called "Disc Brake Silencer" like this: Remove the wheel. Remove the brake pads. Clean the disc and pads with isopropyl alcohol. Spray disc brake silencer onto the pads and let it dry. Remount everything. Do a couple of test brakes. Noise was gone. Again, this was with another bike.
Anyone can jump. Some people just become more comfortable, quicker. Don't give up. Jumping is not only an essential mountain biking skill, it's also really good fun.
That’s so cool! Kid is ripping 🔥
If I had a nickel for every Space-TH-camr who has an interest in Mountainbiking, I had 2 nickels, which isn’t much, but it’s weird that it happened twice :D
AGAIN! Looks awesome, is the trail ilocated n the high forest of germany by chance? When I was there on my vacation I saw a lot of them
Nope, it's in the mountainous region between Austria's capital Vienna and Graz, another big city. You can check it out by searching for Wexltrails.
Cool as hell!
I remember back in the day, mom would buy a couch and leave the clear plastic on it. For YEARS. That's what I think of when I see ride wrap on a bike. I just ride my damn bike.
you look very familiar. im starting to tweak ksp 2 is to much on my mind... also, im starting to get into biking and got a UP2 Head and was thinking about getting a wrap.. ty
I am not advising against a wrap categorically. I just want to prevent other people getting frustrated with the process as I did. Let a professional do it, like a local bike mechanic or something. Yes, it will cost more, but it saves you hours of time and potential frustration (if you are an impatient klutz with bad eyesight like me).
Funny, I just ride my bike.
stick a needle in the bubbles then rub the air out
Unless you are well prepared, you will take a long time and make mistakes. There's tons of guides on TH-cam etc. And no, you don't need a clean room. My LBS does it in the shop. Hair dryer, some baby soap in a spray bottle, a table to lay the film out so you don't get confused. First time I did it, took me like 6 hours. My LBS does it way faster. And yes, I rather pay someone to do it lol. As for whether it's worth it, sure, it's a new bike. It's normal to want to keep it pristine. But likely after a year or so, most people won't bother.
Like seat covers on cars. Keep those seats clean and covered, so when you sell the car the new owner gets to experience new seats which you never did 😂
Damn. Guess you've never kept a car longer than 5 years. Seats rip, blow out, get stained. Seat covers can change once a year. The seats cannot. But hey, if you don't like getting more money when selling either, that's on you
I ride my bike frames the same way I ride my women...... BARE BACK!
Scars are sexy
As a man with multiple scars on my body, I approve of this comment.
Never wrapped a Bike. Once Cannondale tried to refuse my Lifetime warranty because the Bike looked to used... A MTB has to get this Rock blasted and chain slayed Look 🤷. Go Out and Ride it real. If you throw IT away on the trail it will not protect anything.
I still have a 2006 Cannondale Caffeine with the Headshok Ultra fork. I converted it from a traditional 3x9 to 1x11 drivetrain and put a wider bar on it. Great bike! Too bad they screwed you on that lifetime warranty.
@@BruceOnBikes 2 of my caffeine died do to fracture in the Seattube. The third was from China and in sold it.
Now you made me check the seat tube. Still ok, fortunately, but I'll keep an eye on it!
this video reason tl;dr is 3:24 i bought ridewrap full frame protection for my commencal meta TR, it took me over 10 hours but I wanted everything to fit well and no bubbles did it exactly as ridewrap wrote and guess what: patience and precision paid out, it fits perfectly and no bubbles the time is very well spend because to clean my bike I just waterhose it, take a towel and it looks like new´ and ridewrap protects against even bigger rocks that ur front tire throws at your bike 100% worth the money and time in fact you save a lot of time in the long run
Thanks for sharing your experience! My results would probably be a lot better if I had also allotted 10 hours for the process. I took Ridewrap at their word with the "3-4 hours" they put into their instructions. In the end it took almost 6 hours to finish and I got stressed because I had followup appointments. How did you deal with dust particles clinging to the sticky side of the wrap? Those were the most frustrating for me to remove. Regarding the protection effect: after my last ride I got two paint chips exactly 3mm next to where the wrap ended (on pieces where the wrap would never have reached, that was not due to my application of it). Maybe I would have gotten a lot more without it, I don't know. But even with the wrap, your bike will not be impervious to damage from rocks because there will be small gaps where the wrap cannot reach. I need to give bonus points to Ridewrap for including a precise syringe for mixing the solution. Older reviews talked about how it was hard to find the right dosage for the solution and they had trouble applying the warp because of that. With their syringe and the instruction video where they say you should mix 0.5ml for 1 liter of water, the mix worked fine. I never had an issue with it being too sticky or too slippery. How did your wrap stick to parts that were not completely smooth? Two suspension link parts of my Canyon Spectral are made of aluminum and have a bit of a rough surface. Those were easy to place because small and simple parts, but the wrap didn't like to stick onto them because of the uneven surface area.
Not Again!*
A kerbonaut on bike :D. At least the bike wrap is finished.
So, turns out it is in fact the rear disk brake causing this singing noise.
It's awesome to see youtubers doing something completely different than what they usually do. Good luck with your channel!
Hey Bruce, if you want to tick of some features or talk indeepth about technique and bike setup I am here for you. It's the least thing I can do for consuming all of your ksp media for years for free (sorry for not beeing a patreon I guess 😁) I even saw you exiting the lift at Wexl, but quickly told myself, that I must be mistaken. I am a reagular at Wexl, Semmering & Schladming and consider myself an advanced rider, who can actually explain what he's doing and not just do it 😁
cooles video, super stabilisierung. ich bin schon einige Male beim Anninger herumgekurvt, den Trail hab ich noch nicht entdeckt, ich würd ihn sicher wesentlich langsamer fahren. Falls du einmal Segelfliegen in Wr. Neustadt / Hohe Wand / Schneeberg ausprobieren willst, gib Bescheid.
25th sub hype! Also, as another KSP player who enjoys MTB’s, I'm looking forwards to following your journey. If it weren't for an injury (and time of day), you made me want to jump on my bike again :) I've only watched this video as of now, but two points of constructive criticism, if you’re open for it: - Maybe lower the volume of the music somewhat? Hearing the tyres go through the trail really helps with the immersion with the video. - On the subject of immersion: strangely enough I think the video would be better with less stabilization. Currently it feels more like the camera is floating over the terrain like a drone. However, as I stated earlier, I am really forward to seeing your other videos and future ones. Also, this trail looks really fun! Would definitely have to give it a try if I were to visit Austria.
Got any of those affiliate links for the hardware you're using?
Unfortunately not. But I can give you a quick list of what I'm using on this run: Bike: Cube Stereo One22 Race with Maxxis Minon DHF and Minion DHR II tires, Crankworks Stamp 2 Large pedals, Ergon GE 1 Evo grips. No other modifications. Protection: - Helmet: Sweet Protection Arbitrator - Evoc protection shirt (spine, shoulders, chest) - Fox Elbow Guard Launch D30 - Ion K-Pact Zip knee guards - Shimano ET-5 shoes - Fox gloves (don't know the exact model, sorry) Camera is a GoPro Hero Black 11
@@BruceOnBikes Thanks mate!
Not really something I am interested in, but I will say the scenery is great, and the stabilisation on the camera is insane. I'm big into games, and KSP was an all time favourite, but another thing I'm very passionate about is Taichi (and there are videos on youtube with me in them too, but I prefer to remain anonymous). I guess us gamers are never just gamers.... Oh, and good luck with this channel!
