Ampersand Mt Winter Hike

First winter hike to check a few gear items and just get into the groove for the season before tackling anything serious. It's always a good idea to check your gear and be proficient using different gear and testing out layering systems for different conditions. I got a late start to the season, but better late than never! December 28, 2024.
Coney Mt Scenic Fall Hike

A short, 1.1-mile hike up Coney Mt, just South of Tupper Lake, NY. This hike takes less than an hour, but has some great views. I like hiking up Coney Mt before work sometimes and it's a popular hike on nice days. Coney Mt is also part of The Tupper Lake Triad Hiking Challenge.

Goodnow Mt. - Perfect Fall Day

A short, 4-mile roundtrip hike up Goodnow Mt. and the fire tower at the summit. Goodnow Mt. is a moderate hike with no really steep sections and the trail is well maintained and easy to follow. Most anybody can hike this trail and dogs will have no problem at all either. Great 6.6 mile hike up to the fire tower on St Regis Mt by Paul Smith's College. Total about 7 miles though with walking from the parking lot and wandering around along the hike. Panther Mt (not the high peak), just East of Tupper Lake, NY. This trail is only .6 miles to the summit, but starts climbing right away and can be hard to follow at times. That's not a bad idea at all. Avalanche Pass is SO scenic, and although a little longer, I believe definitely an easier route. Happy trails!
Thank's for that, Craig! 60 years ago today I was camped at High Falls on a ten day journey with a friend. Five days at the Falls in a leanto then off to the leanto near Cat Mt. and back to Wanakena. The lookout tower was still on Cat Mt. We saw three people the whole time. I was 18 and had spent the summer as a counselor at Camp Massawepie. After that journey I got on a train to the Northwest to college. Thanks, again.
Wow, the area must have been so much wilder then! No GPS or other modern technology to rely on and far fewer hikers about. I love hearing these stories. Glad you liked the video. :)
@@craigriedel4688 We had a USGS map and a compass. The trails were well marked. Not as much water on the trail as you had but still were spots. Thanks again.

Thanks, I'm glad it's helpful. It's a long hike, but some great scenery along the way... and mud! Lol. I was taking my time plus many videos to put together this one and it took me about 13 hours, just for reference. Also, near the top, at the slab, stay to the left of it. Best of travels out there. :)

Thanks for posting maybe I’ll check out that shelter/ lookout whenever I get up there to finish the CB50. Can’t believe how dry the beaver areas are on the trail.. guess they moved toward lake..

I prefer to hike in the winter. Less crowds and a different beauty
