Great use of Wheel Horse parts! Those unidrive transmissions sure are hard to beat!

Here is a little bit of humor based on a 1936 Buick tractor the Warner kids had in the early 1950s at Wendling, OR. No farming just running around in the hills and having apples fights. Description pretty accurate. I can furnish a photo if wanted. A Buick Tractor? Wayne Warner, Springfield, MO ---------- QUESTION Dear Dr. Stoutwrench: I have a 1936 Buick made into a tractor. It has a 4-speed Chev. truck transmission behind the Buick's 3 speed. It has a Ford truck rear end with 8.25 x 20 truck tires. We thought it was a smashing good idea when we bought this rig from a local shade-tree mechanic. But then when we took delivery, problems developed. We discovered that every time we put a heavy strain on the drive train, the welded pipe holding the two shafts together would snap--so back to the welding shop. We discovered the rear tires had no inner tubes; the rims would spin inside the tires. The designers had trouble mounting the gas tank, so it doubles as a seat for two. But the state inspection people frown on this arrangement. When pulling a 3-bottom plow (low, low gear), the gas mileage drops to about 3 mpg. The coil springs in the front give it a very soft ride and the front is so low we can't get over even a road-kill opossum or skunk. I tried to climb a muddy grade but the tires could get no traction; we have thought about mounting the Buick engine crossways on the back to give it more traction; somebody told us that we would have to compensate by hauling 4 sacks of fertilizer on the front (maybe we could put the fertilizer on the back to save the expense in moving the engine). It does overheat on a hot day, so we have considered pulling a water tank and running the radiator water through the tank (any ideas on that?). Well, there are my problems. Just a couple of more questions: what weight oil do you recommend for engine, transmissions, and rear end? What is the current blue book average for this rare combination? Do you recommend any engineering changes? Do you recommend (after we get the bugs out) that we mass produce this tractor and export it to 3rd world countries? What kind of price could we expect to get in say southern Nigeria? One last question, do you think I could start a club for people who have similar hybrids? Thanks for your intelligent answers as usual. Ping Ping ANSWER Dear Mr. Ping Pong, We have diligently reviewed your communiqué and concluded that perhaps the agrarian structures of the third-world countries are unprepared for a machine of this, uh, technologically superior nature. I could review problems that may occur related to parts and service of your, uh, "hybrid", but suffice to say resources available to third-world countries necessary to maintain a machine of this nature are sadly lacking. Therefore, we will be unable to offer our support of your venture at this time; not that we COULDN'T answer your questions, but, rather that, we cannot, due to legal-liability restraints. (Particularly regarding the positioning of your fuel container, which has jokingly been labeled the "unidirectional-ejection seat" by some office wag here in the complex) Please be aware, however, that we stand available at any time in the future to assist, where appropriate, any other aberrant-behavior projects you may complete. And, as a gesture of our good faith; although I cannot speak in an official capacity regarding the future of your Chevforbutrac (the name chosen as the eventual winner of our office-contest designed to name your invention), I feel that the addition of a Mercury marine engine positioned so as to use the propeller in fertilizer distribution may enhance the marketability of the Chevforbutrac. Should you perfect this concept, or should other options occur, feel free to contact us. Sincerely, Carl Slippedlugs Editor-in-chief, Stoutwrench Publications

Those are way cool! I'd like to see a WD wide front made to look scale from a distance but with more modern Garden tractor features like hydrostatic trans with foot pedals and such. Loader arms with quick change bucket/plow/snowblower/etc too! Plus 3-point with attachements! I don't ask for much do I? :D

No offense. But made from scratch bullshit that is a Wheelhorse drive design. And the transmissions are all Wheelhorse you just change them so they look like they're homemade.

Big guy he's referring to the sheet metal and body work and frames, no crap he didn't make the trans. He fabricated it all to work together.

+spencer pearson I used one on my mini Jeep it works well. Its a worm drive from an ariens i think. I have a video of it on my page

ok great thanks. i just got a 55 willys jeep i am restoring. but i am wanting to build one like the orange tractor or a wheel house. i have a 5hp briggs. and a 250cc china 4wheeler axle with the dick brake and slave cylnder on it. and i black smith so can make tools. for the tractor. but i dont have a trans. how would i go about finding one and what to look for as i am looking around for parts off of other lawn mowers. these little tractors are pretty much gone around here in mississippi. i could use a go kart clutch but then i would not have a trans to gear it. and i can build the frame thats not a prob. i will most likely do a front axle instead of a tri steer.

I just built one using a peerless 700 series 5 speed and right angle gear box. Its a pretty compact package. It was the best way i could come up with junk yard parts. It works just like a riding mower. I just posted a video of it a few days ago. I also have a 46 2a and 67 cj5 Jeeps. Good fun
