    Aside from this being a classic for hip hop - and "2001" although I like this one more - thanks for the shoutout to Eazy E, who had an underrated EP called "It's on (Dr. Dre) 187um Killa" with the infamous diss response. It's got a very good flow coming under 40 minutes. And the title track also is a great diss.

    I was listening to the big three - "Off the Wall", "Thriller" & "Bad" - of Michael's penultimate dancing phase the other day. What I discovered is that "Off the Wall" is my clear favorite, album-wise and artistically. It's got the best track-to-track flow for me while the other feel more like monstrous singles coupled with deep cuts that just doesn't live up to the status of both "Thriller" ("Girl is Mine" and "The Lady in my Life") and "Bad" ("Just Good Friends", "Another Part of Me" and still "Man in the Mirror"). "Girlfriend" might be my least favorite on "Off the Wall" because of its strange back beat and overall time signature but it's still working really well within the albums flow. There's an argument that can be made for "Off the Wall" being the best collection of disco and R&B songs that ended up being a strongly cohesive and gracefully aged album, narratively and qualitatively that can be played as a whole on the dancefloor in its various phases of warming up, getting to a highpoint, calming down and finally getting ready for the last round. Still, three albums of one guy that can't be forgotten in music history.

    • @combingthestacks1470
      @combingthestacks1470 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I agree that Off the Wall is great, but it's hard for me to not vote for Thriller. It sounds amazing production wise, even after all of these years. Quincy Jones somehow found production that sounded appealing and huge at the same time which is HARD to do.

    I saw this album, for a long time, as my preferred Nirvana album because of its raw expose of especially Kurt's emotions of irony and abstractions but also bis self-hatred, depression and drug use. Now, I'm more split between this and "Nevermind" which were both very much influenced by past sounds and influenced many bands and genres that would come after them. My favorites on "In Utero" are songs are like "Scentless Apprentice", "Frances Farmer", "Dumb", "Pennyroyal Tea", "All Apologies" and "Heart-Shaped Box" as being my favorite Nirvana song. You're not gonna be covering "MTV Unplugged"? Oh man, that's also a great one representing an acoustic side of Nirvana - not entirely because of Kurt's guitar equipment - that fits them well too.

    • @combingthestacks1470
      @combingthestacks1470 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      We try to cover studio albums and not live albums. So the "Unplugged" album is one of the casualties of that approach. I would cover the Eric Clapton, Nirvana and Alice in Chains Unplugged if we expanded to live albums. Early in the show, we did a few live albums as bonuses ("Live in Leeds" comes to mind) but it felt lie it was taking away from the chance to find new albums. I am comfortable in saying that Josh, Matt and I all would rate the Nirvana Unplugged album as an "Elite" album.

    I never let a statue tell me how nice I am ~ Phife Dawg Again a fantastic album by those guys where I felt like they got a bit more edge on this one as "The Low End Theory" had, but I still consider TLET as my favorite for reason that I can quote some of their lyrics and the sample are more ear candy to me. But then again, it's the highest level of elevating another album for such small things. "Midnight Marauders" was and still is a big jewel for rappers to come and with "We Got it from Here..." as one of my favorites of the 2010s it's even more a testament as to why have one of the strongest catalogues of hip hop.

    The only hip hop group from which I own two shirts. 10/10 on my scale, but it wasn't love on first listen because at that time I only listened to Eminem, Jay-Z and N.W.A. It shaped and re-defined my limited view on hip hop and it gave me the opportunity appreciating the ugly and off-putting sounds which are adding a need touch to the overall gritty and cold atmosphere. And as a movie fan, I'll always love RZA's Wuxia and Kung fu samples the most next to MF DOOM. "Enter the Wu-Tang" is my no.1 hip hop album and a deserted island album to me. And it's gonna be interesting if you move up to Queensbridge where you got Nas and Mobb Deep to cover, at least I hope so 😅

    I couldn't choose whether "Ten" or "Vs" is my favorite Pearl Jam record, but in a sentimental way this here would be it. "Rearviewmirror", "Glorified G" ("always keep it loaded" gets me every time), "Elderly Woman...", "Blood", "Go"- actually every track except the closer is a great song for working, sweating, struggling, hustling and enjoying the seasons of the year. Closing tracks on Pearl Jam albums like from "Ten" to "Vitalogy" are, ironically, my least favorite songs where they kind of cool it down, but it's comparibly too long.

    "When the Sun Hits" was the song that lifted "Souvlaki" up for me by quite a bit while listening to it for the first time which was about 1 or 1,5 years ago. One thing I would say about this album is how cathartic it feels to me and it's excellent for walking early in the morning when the sun rises and it's not just this song. It's definitely a great one for me. And although "loveless" was more ground-breaking as to its earlier release and also enjoyable, I end up claiming that "Souvlaki" would be my favorite shoegaze/dream pop contribution when it comes to letting yourself go for a while.

    I'll be excited what Josh and Matt are gonna think about those PJ Harvey albums you've mentioned you're gonna be covering. For me, just like Kate Bush, Fiona Apple, Björk or Tori Amos, PJ Harvey is a female singer songwriter who doesn't play by the "rules" of music industry. And I love all of them I mentioned btw. PJ Harvey however is one of my favorite female singers, an awesome songwriter and she's got a gift for crafting great riffs.

      @@combingthestacks1470"Dry" I consider also as part of the PJ Harvey echelant. It's overall a more straight album, not too much experimentation with sound and her voice but a gritty and, as you said, already defining personality. "Rid of Me" is also awesome and a little bit more challenging in a way of compositions. But "To Bring You My Love" which could be my favorite of hers (or "Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea", the first album I've heard from her) where you feel kind of a spirit of old blues legends like Robert Johnson and Lead Belly crawling up to her voice drenched in this modern but also experimental territory with symbolic lyrics that are very haunting.

And I came to realize - while some songs in their later period are maybe stronger and more risky for me and "Abbey Road" as probably my favorite Beatles album (or "Revolver") - for long-term listening: "A Hard Day's Night" up to "Revolver" aka the mid period aka the 13-14 track/under 40 minutes period is probably my favorite Beatles period 🙂

It's really tragic that he didn't really got any profit out of it besides being an inspiration for like every second or third songwriter over decades. It seems that he had been cursed since his childhood because of this insulin shock therapy which also came up in biology when I was in school. As for the lyrics, you can pretty much make a statement by saying that he can be considered as one of the best songwriters ever. This album was my introduction to him and it was only a few days ago.

    This album - for me, one of the weaker albums in their catalogue - could be considered as the ultimate version of choosing who's your favourite Beatle. And it's Lennon, because my favourite of this is "Across the Universe" and "Dig a Pony" I consider a close second. He just gives me more interesting, lyrical stuff. But I gotta agree with Jon "The Long and Winding Road", but disagree with "Let It Be" which by miles not that schmaltzy as the first one and I love subtle choir and the piano and key playing. Anything else? Well, "Get Back" is okay, "I Me Mine" also okay and the rest... eh... that's not a note that I want the Beatles to end on. But I'm saying this: The Giles Martin mix more pleasant to listen to, especially with "Across the Universe" where Lennon's sleepy vocals shine more.

      @@combingthestacks1470One song written by McCartney during Beatles I couldn't and still can't stand is "Hey Jude". A song that, just like "The Long and Winding Road", is totally overstaying its welcome with this "naaa naa-naa na-ne-na-na" which is quite the laziest and obnoxious thing, for me, the Beatles did until this point. Still, McCartney cemented himself as one of the best songwriters with tracks such as "Yesterday", "Blackbird", "I'm Looking Through You", "You Won't See Me", "We Can Work It Out", "Eleanor Rigby", "For No One", "Back in the USSR", "Helter Skelter", "Maxwell Silver Hammer" and many more and of course some Wings tracks, just to pinch Jon a bit 😅 He would be - and that's a bit cheating, together with John Lennon which I favor for more edge and being more unhinged - at no. 3 of my favorite songwriters. And believe it or not, I'd favor Mick Jagger and Keith Richards lyrically before the other two which is a hot take, I guess 🔥🧯

    I’m sorry guys, but I’m gonna have to go thumbs down again for this one. It absolutely it adult-contemporary; it has all the characteristics of adult-contemporary and it checks all the boxes. I just don’t think that Sade is a very interesting artist. She’s a GREAT *SINGER,* but that’s all there is. Like, I need something else, something more, and unfortunately I just don’t really get it, as while yes, it’s very well-played instrumentally, the music itself just hangs there in that subdued state the whole time and never goes anywhere or does anything unexpected or interesting. So, while I absolutely acknowledge the positives about this album and Sade in general, like her voice and proficient playing of the band and some occasional strong lyrical moments, nothing else on this really connected with me at all. So unfortunately, yea..thumbs down for me. 🖤

      No worries, disagreement is fine. I will admit to being way more open to adult contemporary or "sophistapop" than most. Sade's voice has a quality that just separates her from the genre for me.

    1. She's one of the best singers in Pop/Rock EVER. Lyric Soprano, four octives (C4-C7)! whistle register, really powerful voice, perfect pitch, and super flexible, she can sing anything. 2. She rewrote some of Girls Just Want to Have Fun, because the original lyrics were misogynistic. 3. Her career crashed with the third album in 1989. It was a really bad time. She broke up with her boyfriend/manager, and the record company abandoned her. However, she married actor David Thorton in 1991, and they're still togather. 4. She has a total of about fourteen studio albums, including: A Christmas album, an acoustic album, an album of standards, an EDM album, a country album, and the best sellng blues album of 2010. 5. As a sampler, look up "Cyndi Lauper, Best Live Vocals". Also, the "Live in Paris" concert movie. It's worth your time. She is a great performer, one of those artists who is better live than on record. She turned seventy this past June, and she sings as well as ever.

      It's funny, I'll have a fair amount of this type of reaction when we get to the 2000s. My frame of reference is going to be a lot of Madden (American Football) and MLB The Show games as well as a few Rock Band deep cuts. Lots and lots of emo and other odds and ends that I'll have unusual nostalgia when revisiting!

    What do you guys think about the 2020 mix of "All Things Must Pass"? Overall, I prefer the new mix. George's voice come more through, his guitar playing is more distinct (especially his slide on "What Is Life" and the wah-wah sound on "Wah Wah") and the snare isn't as upfront. But on the other hand I prefer the original reverb of "My Sweet Lord" which feels more epic. With that being said: This album is awesome! And for me, like "Plastic Ono Band" and "Imagine", it easily keeps up with the Beatles best stuff. And if the length bothers someone, you can separate the Apple Jam or hear from "I'd Have You Anytime" to the title track and you got an excellent 14-track package.

    17:00 You're spot on the money, Arthur Russell started out in the 70s with soft country-folk songs leading into a Paul Simon-esque early New York period. He covered an insane amount of ground, collaborated with figures as diverse as Allen Ginsberg, David Byrne, Julius Eastman, and Vin Diesel across a ridiculous range of genres. His disco productions massively inspired Chicago House, his electro recordings for Rough Trade pre-saged LCD Soundsystem and arguably deconstructed club. One of the ultimate musicians' musicians.

And it really sounds like it too; I hate the way this album sounds, and the lyrical subjematter doesn’t do it any favors. Aside from War of Man which is the one song I actually do like, this album to me is just so corny and lame.

      That was Matt's original take on the album too. But he was won over by the evolution of Neil Young. Listening to albums over (in Young's case) four decades has given us some more tolerance for the evolution of an artist...even if we prefer other stuff.

    I've always had a difficult relationship with R.E.M., but I especially love two albums by them which is "Murmur" and this one. "Automatic for the People" is the only album where I felt they were hitting all the right areas lyrically, musically and melodically, for me at least.

      I'm biased (R.E.M. is a top five band for me), but listening to all the albums in order and in context has only elevated the band for me. It's pretty amazing that a band that did this type of music was as big as they were in the late 80s and 90s. For my money, they probably were the most popular mainstream band of the 90s only to fall out of consciousness by the time you were listening to music in a contemporary fashion.

      Nothing against you, I’m sure you mean well, but saying that “oh, nothing touching the early days! IRS era was perfect!” is such a pretentious hipster take an I’m frankly tired of hearing it. They grew a lot from the IRS era and in their big success era (Warner Bros. 1988-1996) they were better musicians, better personalities and better songwriters and Michael Stile was able to hold an entire audience eating out of the palm of his hand. It was just a better era for them and it’s my favorite, with New Adventures in Hi-Fi as my favorite album of theirs.

      R.E.M. is turning into such an interesting band for the show. The three of us came to them originally at the "Green" era so we tracked with their late 80s/90s era and enjoyed them. However, I can totally get how someone who saw them "real time" in the 80s can feel that they lost a little bit of their special sauce from the 80s. Interestingly, for those that didn't get R.E.M. real time in the 80s and 90s, R.E.M. seems to be just another band (or even forgotten). Which is way sadder to us than discussions over whether the 80s or 90s R.E.M. is better/worse than the other!

    A small, late take from myself: I've probably made a point about me being a fan of Springsteen and I definitely see your criticism about "The River" being too long with some songs like "Wreck on a Highway" that don't have the lyrical and musical quality of the first 11 songs which are, for me, a perfect album and why I love Springsteen. For me, it's a case like the Beatles' "White Album". It could've needed some editing, but this excessive trip of 20 tracks... maybe that was something that Springsteen really wanted. I enjoyed it the entire album, but yeah, the quality decreases a bit after the title track. And the best version of "The River" would be, as Matt was referring, on the "Live/1975-85", a live album which is like an adventure for a kid at its first time in an amusement park.
