2000 iso (no lut) - there will always be some noise here, but its basically the raw log so thats to be expected. You camera choice depends on alot of factors.. the e-mount on the sony may give you more lens options, but i just prefer sonys menu's, camera setup and look. It would be best to shoot tests before choosing. If possible I always try to hire it on a small job so I can really get a feel for a new peice of gear especially before buying it or using it on a larger project.

Hi Ben, by saying "bake in the LUT" I meant turning on the MLUT or 'look' for internal recording on the cards - not only for previewing. However I do suggest not doing this as my best results are shooting in Cine.slog3 mode, viewing/previewing a LC709 LUT/look with 1000 ISO for exposure but internally recording the base 2000iso clean Slog to the cards for correction later. Baking in the LUT gives you less options later for the grade - but thats just my preference.

Well I suppose I had enough light, because I was filming outside in sunlight but I find its important to always 'grade down' and not lift the Slogs on Sony cameras if you aren't filming RAW. The latitude you get in shadows and mids is great at your base exposure when the black/lower exposure areas are crushed slightly in the grade (even if you don't touch highlights). Obviously if you are locked to using 3200ISO or something you should try and control the light coming in with ND's - and then wider apertures - as a little depth of field can also help soften the image - but as a rule I try to shoot at the lower ISOs if possible and grade down. But I haven't used this particular camera model enough to give specific advice - I know when I use the FS7 I rate the ISO at 1000 in s-log3 (the base is 2000) so I overexpose by a stop, so when i grade it 'down' I can crush all the grain/noise - you never want to be in a situation where its so dark that your base Slog image is what you finally use (unless you want noise), you HAVE TO grade s-log. Hope that helps!

+Ken Harris I exposed for the shadow side of the subjects face, but the light side is about 2/3rds to a full stop over exposed than ideal. Its really good resolution and dynamic range wise for its price point, but the rolling shutter is really bad...even on a tripod, any quick movements paying/tilting are wobbly. Firmware has dealt with overheating with the cam automatically stopping at 29:50, but like dslr's before I wouldn't run it hot and then not expect more noise. But, its really good - depends how you shoot...I do a lot of handheld and resolution isn't an issue for me yet, so my D800 is still good for low budget but if you need low light performance and 4k and have more locked off shots or controlled movement...a great buy.

Censored Planet Its a great camera, best bang for buck if one can't go Alexa or RED...Yeah, I mainly shoot 2000ISO and just get my exposure into a healthy enough position on the waveform (which does disappearing acts in the viewfinder!) so that when the dark areas are crushed in the grade the noise isn't as noticable in the shadows. Overall I'd say its THE new workhorse camera (ergonomics, 4k internal), but its also a few firmware upgrades away from being great (to be able switch between looks/LUTs faster, WB/colour temp preset change in cine mode, 2k, 100fps at 2k, etc ). Basically shoot 75% of my jobs on it since January and few passion projects aswell. The e-mount gives you such flexibility re: lensing (EF, F or PL).

The production company that hired me, finished a short version of it, with view to releasing a series of documentaries about small towns like Struisbaai. So it hasn't been released yet, but will update this comment if it does. Thanks for the kind words. :)
