October 30th - Breathy Notes on the Harmonica, Pucker Problems
Hello again, everyone! Another post-gym bit of harmonica fun.
I recently picked up a Hohner Special 20 harmonica and started breaking it in. Not sure how long the process will take, but it seems to be going well.
Along the way, I've been reviewing a few of my past videos. I'm realizing now that I have been playing pretty 'breathy' or 'airy' on the harp, which is due to a mix of reasons:
Too much air being let out of the nose. I test this by pinching my nose shut, which makes the sound much fuller.
Too little volume. This is a habit I've probably gotten into as I try to keep my playing relatively quiet and polite.
Poor embrochure. This is something that's been happening after I changed my grip on the harmonica. Originally, my hands formed too much of a gap to allow me to 'slap' the harp to change the sound. After changing my hands, my new finger position had a habit of pushing my lips off the cover plates. Now I have to fix my lips to get a better air seal.
Fix one thing, create three more problems. Or a fourth - the new lip and hand position is throwing off my feel for where I am on the harp. Seem to keep mixing up around holes 6 and 7.
But also - fixing this stuff is half the fun!
Side note - my lower lip/jaw feels like it keeps retreating. I need to work those lower jaw muscles to keep everything forward.
I feel pretty close to a good foundation of skills. Still need work on a few of the various techniques, but I can also practice those while learning an actual song. Puckering is something I should really get right before I want to practice anything other than the few songs I know.
Good news about all these changes, though - I seem to be able to bend hole 3 and am starting to bend holes 2. Progress!

October 25th - Breaking in the Hohner Special 20
มุมมอง 16514 วันที่ผ่านมา
Howdy all. I've been breaking in the new harmonica with a bit of practice. Hole placement is a bit different here than on the Golden Melody that I'm used to - the holes are a bit wider and square on the Special 20, in contrast to the tall and narrow holes of the Golden Melody. It's a great harp, though. The notes play easily. I'm putting a bit too much breath into it, especially on the draw not...
Frere Jacques on the Harmonica - play along with tabs!
มุมมอง 12121 วันที่ผ่านมา
Time to play some easy harmonica! Frere Jacques, also known as Brother John or Brother Jack, is a pretty straightforward song to learn. It's great to practice puckering and hole position for holes 3-6 on the harp. Included in the video are tabs, play along portions, and a full run of the song. It's a short song, though. Not many notes to learn overall. I'll be playing with a harmonica in the ke...
October 11th - Further Harmonica Practice... Bending is Easier!
มุมมอง 32328 วันที่ผ่านมา
Practice is the name of the game. Ever since my last video on practicing with the harmonica, I feel marginally improved. Bending is easier, both in speed and precision. I can tongue block 2 holes (out of 4) for a good octave. Making these videos reminds me that I need more practice. I recently heard a little piece of advice that's sticking with me: "Practice what you're not good at." (Paraphras...
October 6th - Random Harp Practice and Notes to Self
มุมมอง 14328 วันที่ผ่านมา
Howdy all. I've been playing harmonica for a little while now - over a year. In all that time, I've mostly been sticking to what I've been comfortable with: puckering. Puckering is a way of playing a single note at a time by pulling your lips tightly together. Plenty of other techniques are around that I really need to practice. This video is both a way to remind myself of what I need to get on...
Campfire Slow Harmonica - improvisation from a beginner
มุมมอง 24หลายเดือนก่อน
It has been one of my longtime dreams to play harmonica while sitting next to the campfire, stars rolling by overhead. There's quite a bit of harp practice between me and there, but it's a good goal to aim for. This song is slow and rambling. I played it while my tiny baby fell asleep next to me. Not too loud, nothing fast paced. These videos are created without the use of AI. I believe that us...
