    Thank you, Mike. Well done on spawning this species. This is one on my wishlist. I did have some S. prionotus before, but I lost these to a treatment I had to use on another species of fish in with them. Is that the other species you have? By the way, in English, we pronounce gel as 'jell', and bristles as 'bris - sulls'. The clusters of eggs are usually called plaques, pronounced 'plarks'. Peculiarities of the language.

    • @aquaticmike
      @aquaticmike 44 นาทีที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks Major, They're quite easy to spawn though. Sad to hear that you lost the prionotus, it's a species i've never seen in a aquarium store in Sweden through my some 30 years. I did manage to find some in holland last year, pretty expensive compared to some other species and they didn't have very many of them. 4 was brought home with me and fairly certain both sexes, 3 remain and likely both sexes but i've had no sucess with these yet. I don't keep them as cool as the other two species as i've struggled to find out the temperature range they're found in. Altho they're in the bottom of one of the racks so quite cool none the less now during the winter. The other two are barbatus and cw038 which i've both spawned, one a few hundred times and the other atleast in double digits. Gotcha on the vocabulary and pronunciations, they're not always spot on as a Swede ^^ Hopefully i can make myself understood though I took extra english after I bailed on the german classes, however the glossary homework lacked some words useful for the interest in tropical fish 🙂. And I guess some previous gaming and a previous american gf could have influenced my english somewhat as well

    Thanks, Mike. The adults look really pretty. It's a pity that this species and Aspidoras in general are not available in fish stores because they deserve more attention, especially now that small aquascaped tanks are in vogue.

    • @aquaticmike
      @aquaticmike 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks Major, yeah it's a shame they're not as common in the hobby. I don't think i've seen them near at all in the swedish stores other then what i believe to be offspring of fish i've brought to the stores. I've seen a few in germany atleast tho. And well i guess i've seen pauciradiatus in Sweden as imported. However pauciradiatus has been moved to Corydoras awhile back but lineage 5, so now Gastrodermus. I've got raimundi, fuscoguttatus & poecilus, and well the red one as well, often called c125 however that is raimundi nowadays, although i think they're more similar in appearance to fuscoguttatus. Out of those poecilus have the nices pattern, raimundi are the most energetic and fuscoguttatus abit more laid back and easist to mix with other speices whiöe raising their fry /Mike

    • @aquaticmike
      @aquaticmike 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      If you've got microworms i would recommend starting them of with them once the yolk sac is consumed. One of the most important things will be keeping ammonia/nitrite at 0 and nitrates low by doing waterchanges quite often. How often will depend alittle on how large of a water volume you keep them in, how many you keep in that water volume, how often you feed. Generally it's better to feed often, a few times a day, and abit less each of those times as opposed to one big feeding. In terms of food, microworms, artemia naupli, ground up commercial foods/decapsulated artemia / gel food work quite well. And when you refill the container, be abit gentle with the fry so they're not damaged. I would recomend keeping a spongefilter in the tank. I normally don't have plants but plants are benefitial too, especially moss or similar plants that can absorb some nitrates and that keep some microfauna they can snack on Best of luck Mike

      @aquaticmike I don't have any microwaves or any tiny live food as of now I'm feeding egg yolk boiled one the so they are eating Can I feed them until they get bigger to eat micro pellets

    • @aquaticmike
      @aquaticmike 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yes feeding egg yolk should work till they're large enough to take small commercial foods and/or ground up comercial foods. As egg yolk initially goes mainly in the water column you may need to change water quite frequent. High nitrate often reduce the growth rate of fish

    • @yashtapase3821
      @yashtapase3821 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@aquaticmike yeah I know the water column thing so when I put the food near fries I stop aeration for 30m and after 30min I checked their belly and most of them eat the food which is rested on the bottom and then I start aeration and after some hours I change water everything is going fine no losses at all

    • @aquaticmike
      @aquaticmike 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Should work fine & sounds like you've got something good going and even if they grow slightly slower i wouldn't start changing things then. Nitrates & feeding frequency and how potent he food is is the three things that matter the most unless problems with nitrite/ammonium

    I just lost one of my male Habrosus last night. He was going on 5 years old and had been doing fine. Down to 2 males and 2 females, want to pick up more but they are hard to find.

      It's always sad when you loose an adult so i feel you, eventually Corydoradinae fish will pass from old age to tho even tough they've got quite a long lifespan compared to some of other aquarium fish 🙁 It's rare to be able to make all the hatched fry to adults tho If you're in Sweden i might be able to help you, otherwize if they're the only fish in the tank feed them live artemia naupli for a few days and then change the water with slightly cooler water and rinse out he filter and that sets them off most of the time incase you'd want to try and breed them /Mike

    Thanks, Mike. I keep mine at 24°C and when the females are ripe, I find that even a small water change will trigger spawning. The fry have very small mouths, and I have to feed Paramecium as a first food. Otherwise, they don't thrive. Prior to spawning, the males get very aggressive towards each other, and the black patch in the dorsal fin intensifies, whilst in the females it fades. This difference is dichromatism, whereas dimorphism is the difference in body shape.

    • @aquaticmike
      @aquaticmike 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Aye, it felt alittle wrong but i couldn't come to think of the word i was looking for, thanks for the correction though It isn't uncommon for the males to turn slightly darker/blacker here either and they often chase one another quite abit during prespawning and spawning behaviour

    Thanks for posting, Mike. Always good to see an update. When you say they are a lot more finicky when it comes to water quality, you obviously refer to nitrates. Would you care to elaborate on this? Also, what triggers did the parents respond to?

    • @aquaticmike
      @aquaticmike 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Mainly in regards to spawning, my cw14/23 and cw10 breed alot more regularly with the regular tap waterchanges Cw9 gets triggered if you throw in some RO water / rainwater, possibly with an increased flow at the same time. Sometimes the one or the other will be enough

      In a 12 or 40 or 54l tank the majority of the time, sand substrate in now all of them, some were bare bottom previously All filtered with spongefilters with a higher ppi then 30 (ppi 30 or lower they can get stuck in, been there done that) Mainly fed microworms, occasionally home made gel food and other small commercial foods Unlike quite a few others i transfer them to their own tank as soon as their yolk sack is consumed and sometimes prior to that, abit depending on tank availability and work times Kins regards Mike

    Thanks Mike. I'm breeding this species atm and I too am experiencing low fecundity with numbers as low as 30% fertilisation. Difficult to know whether it's poor sperm numbers from the males, or if the females are not good at spitting the sperm onto the eggs. Mine spawn at 24˚C, 4˚DH and at pH 6.3. They prefer to spawn on the glass and on Anubias spp. Although they don't appear to eat the eggs, I like to remove them into a hatchery and then transfer the fry to a growing-on tub. I have observed adults eat fry but cannot be certain whether this was intentional cannibalism, or if accidental ingestion whilst feeding. They didn't chase any of the fry which hatched before I found them. I've had fry survive in the adult tank (36L bin) and by the time I have seen them, at about 8-10mm TL, they were feeding amongst the adults without fear, and I've left them in.

    • @aquaticmike
      @aquaticmike ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Bear, I bred mine in a tank with mainly java moss, feed them naupli twice a day and rotate that with some blackworms or microworms/grindal/white worms for a few days in a row up to like a week, if they havn't bred at this point and if atleast one female is plump, make a water change with slightly colder water and rinse out the filter (optional) for some increased flow. This should set them off. Worth mentioning i supose could be that i have done this in a species setup and a shared tank with hastatus. If you've got alot of other tank inhabitants you can also try and give them their own tank for example Mine have bred from 21 degrees in winter month up to slightly over 28 degrees celcius in the summer months, however keeping the temperature in the lower range of that span is prefered /Mike

      @aquaticmike 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, i nearly always start them off on microworms and sometimes if they're hosted with larger fry they may also have some home made gel food which is pretty nutrient rich. I normally make logs the first time i have fry from a species, for this species i hadn't measured them at 7 days. Most of the fry are just under a cm (7-9mm TL) at this time for the average sized species. The only measurement i had logged for this species was at 2 months, 2cm SL /Mike

    Hi Mike, I'm from Australia. I have a few of these fish which are very expensive here. I'm not getting any success in getting them chunky or in spawning mode. My temp is at 25 celsius (75 farenheit) is that ok or do they like a lower temp? I've also been doing weekly water changes. How many water changes should I do? It just seems that they're mostly hiding except for at night when it's feeding time.

    • @aquaticmike
      @aquaticmike 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there sleepy-_-tASMR, Welcome to my channel 😊 Mine spawned the first time in a 375l “community tank” with exclusively Corydoras from different lineages. These where guapore, delphax, elegans, eques and brevirostris. They spawned in approx. ~24 °C, Ph 7, around 200 µS, Kh 1. So the temperature should be fine. The tank contained a two internal pumps. Echinadorus blehri, quadricostatus, tenellum, mangrove roots, anubias barteri, ceratophyllum demersum. The eggs were deposited on the echinadorus and on the glass on the sides of the tank. They were getting water changes with tap water every 10th day. The food was variated but for some time only commercial foods and for shorter periods live foods were alternated with some frozen and freeze dried, sometimes synced with the water changes. If you’ve got access to freeze dried tubifex give it a try if you havn’t, don’t feed it all to often tho as it has a to high protein content to be fed continuously. Mine didn’t hide all that much even tho I had no dither fish with them, however there were some ~40 Corydoras in total in the tank. When they’ve gotten chunkier, if the nitrate don’t get out of hand you can try and leave a little longer between the water changes and feed them more sparingly for a few weeks. If you can at slightly higher temperature. Then if you’ve got access to water with less µS, start changing water for a few days in a row with the water with lower µS and at lower temperature, when you do this the first time if you’ve got a heater in the tank, lower it a degree or two. Rinse out the filters for extra flow unless you can alternate the flow some other way. This while giving them live/frozen/freeze dried food for a while. /Mike

    Great video Mike. Luxury accommodation for corys. I keep mine in smaller tanks with almost identical water parameters. They spawn quite easily for me, but they're manic, yours are quite laid back by comparison. I collect the eggs and get about 90% hatch rate from them, but I can't seem to raise the fry very well at all. Out of the last spawning I raised 3 out of about 130 eggs. I start the fry on infusoria after they absorb the yolk sac, 48h, and they seem fine but after 5 days they slowly start dying off. 1 or 2 at first but then by day 10 there are only 12 or so left. Daily water changes with clean, warm water, good aeration and floating plants in the rearing tubs. How do you hatch and raise yours, please?

    • @aquaticmike
      @aquaticmike 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cheers, yes this particular tank is larger then the majority of the tanks where i keep corydoras too. I collect the eggs as well, i put them in containers of approx 2l, where i hatch them. Once hatched, sometimes on the day sometimes as the yolk sack is consumed i move them, alittle depending on time and tank availability. They are then put in a tank between 12 and 54l where as i start them on microworm. It's on my to do list, sometime in the future to make a video about it. Napoensis fry don't compete to well against other species fry with food, incase you're mixing them /Mike

    • @majorbruster5916
      @majorbruster5916 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@aquaticmike Thank you, Mike. No, I don't mix the fry. I tend to spawn them one batch at a time. I didn't feed mine on microworms because, looking at the fry under the microscope, the worms are larger than their mouths. The latest batch are on day 9 and I am getting 2 to 3 deaths per day now, but this may be due to my feeding them on freeze dried brine shrimp which is causing a nitrite problem in the tub. So I am doing 2 water changes per day now. I have no problems raising C. similis fry, nor C. pygmaeus fry.

    • @aquaticmike
      @aquaticmike 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah okey, i havn't looked at them under a microscope, sometimes i also add some sera micron along with the microworms but i havn't done this with all of the batches i have raised. Whether if they actually ate the microworms or if they found microorganisms at the filters before heading onto the microworms i can't say for certain. I've raised between 1 and 2k napoensis to adults, all of the first tanks they head into have sponge filters, most often sand and ramshorn snails, i have no plants in them but having plants should just add more places to find micro organisms. I would then give them gel food, previously repashy with own ingredients added. Since Brexit we can't get it anymore so i've now started making my own gel food from scratch

    • @majorbruster5916
      @majorbruster5916 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@aquaticmike I don't move the fry into larger containers until after they are over 10 days. And only once they are 21 days do I put them into filtered tanks. Maybe they don't get the benefit of microorganisms off a sponge filter? I am currently putting together a larger 2L tub with a flow through filtration system and some sand. Perhaps I should try giving them repashy? Thanks for your advice, like most Swedes your English is very good, and thanks for taking the time to message me. Have really enjoyed watching your videos and have subscribed.

    • @aquaticmike
      @aquaticmike 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for the feedback and for subbing. I believe them to be eating some of the small micro organism around the sponges, similar to keeping javamoss when colony breeding. They provide both small micro organism a place to filter feed small food particles and a hiding place, not that the hiding place is needed in a fry only tank but. As i don't live where i have the tanks and work shifts i have been more successful moving them early, i know alot of people keep them in the hatching container for the first 1-2 weeks tho and change water before every feeding. I don't change water every day since where i keep them there's filters somewhat decreasing the risk of ammonia and nitrite. I do however change water on their tanks more often. Sadly i don't have that automated where i'm at atm, but hopefully in another location in the future. Regarding gel food i normally start using that between 1-2 weeks of age and then i add in some comercial base food at around the size when i move them to larger tanks, around 1.5 - 2.5 months of age alittle depending on tank availability and what species i add together and the size of the fry. Adding a group of larger napoensis or pygmaeus with for example aeneus or schultzei works to some extent meanwhile raising smaller pygmaeus or napoensis with larger aeneus or schultzei does not work as well, or atleast i have experienced the more delicate fry to get out competed to a larger extent then.
