New Shop and Autopilot Servo Installation
After a long break moving from Utah to Texas and settling into a new house, I first needed to build a new shop, before I could continue with the build. But before I could cover the fuselage with fabric, I needed to install the autopilot servos. This episode covers configuring the new garage/shop and fabricating the autopilot servo mounts under the co-pilot’s seat.

S-20 / S-21 Panel Fabrication, Avionics and Electrical Wiring
มุมมอง 6K11 หลายเดือนก่อน
Now that I have the panel designed, it’s time to cut the holes, mount the equipment and run all the wires to complete the avionics and electrical system installation. I’ll explain my methodology to fabricate a capable and serviceable electrical harness, custom built for the RANS S-20/21. I also offer many tips I’ve learned from years as an avionics technician. And lastly, packing it all up for ...
S-20 / S-21 Avionics Selection, Schematics and Panel Layout
มุมมอง 3Kปีที่แล้ว
The next big steps in the build process are, first to select the avionics suite and deciding on the features I want from those systems, then creating a full set of schematics to support those features. Along the way it’s necessary to perform a load analysis so as to not overload the alternator. Then finally the I’ll need to take all that information and design the instrument panel layout. This ...

It's time to build the interior for my RANS S-20. This video covers a few months of work to fabricate the side panels, baggage area and covering it all with upholstery. Along the way it offers a few build tips and fabrication of the wood floors in the baggage area and cockpit footwell. Enjoy...
RANS S-20 Fuselage Electrical Harness Layout and Routing
มุมมอง 600ปีที่แล้ว
In this video, I describe how I’m going to route the electrical harness through the fuselage structure. In this stage of the build, all the major systems are in place, and the interior panels are done. This gives me the opportunity to plan the routing of the electrical wires. The goal is to run and secure all the wire harnesses before covering the fuselage frame, as it’s much easier at this poi...

Wing Build Part 2 - Installing Fuel Tanks and Avionics Sensors
มุมมอง 4862 ปีที่แล้ว
This finishes up the structural wing build of the Rans S-20, including installing the magnetometer, Pitot/AoA probe and temperature sensor. The only thing left is to cover the wings, but that's after the fuselage is built and the weather gets warmer.

    Your roll servo looks good and good catch on the seat pull pin. How is the servo/seat clearance with someone sitting in the seat? The Rans seats tend to flex and give up a little bit with moderate use. I have seen zipties used to support passenger weight, laces and probably the best solution, an actual aluminum seat pan. Your plane is really coming together!

      @sunflightaviation 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Mjbrennan. Thanks for your comment. The roll cable runs to the outside edge of the seat pan, so the sag would be more towards the center of the seat. And there is still plenty of vertical clearance for the bridle clamp from the seat pan. So I don't need to worry about seat clearance. It's that pull pin that's causing all the trouble. Hopefully my fix will take care of that problem.

    I just found this channel. What a great video series! Thank you for taking the time to post these. I am excited to see all of the technical behind the scenes stuff - slack in the electrical, mounting points and rationale, etc. Great stuff.

    I’m so glad I found your channel. I’m not building a rans, I’m building a Vans, but your advice is gold! The industry standard of having the engine gauges on the same side as the controls is something I didn’t know, and will implement. And the elt control position I will now move in my design. I had it far right as well, thinking I will never have to use it. Oh also you are making me want to build a rans next.

    I live south of Dallas. I want to get into the UAV/ Drone business on how to fix them..I was told to get more involved in the avionics electrician. I don't have experience in aviation. My background is computer to building engineer. Is there any internship or help out on the weekend to get more experience to add to my resume. I'm 37 I don't see myself going to school anymore.

    This video should be seen by anybody doing their own electrical as you are. I looked at a used kit plane last week and the wiring was a so bad, there was no confidence to be had in looking any further into that aircraft for purchase. You have lots of great suggestions and pictures too. Your experience with this subject is quite obvious and appreciated. Your presentation and delivery is even better. Its almost like you have done this for a living before. (HA HA, I saw your 1st video of the series)

    Suggest editing your title to catch all those folks that just search for “S-21”. All your videos on avionics selection, harness building and wood floors apply to the 20 and 21. Suggest edit title to S-20 Raven, the precursor to the S-21 Outbound….. Should greatly increase your potential audience of many topics that apply to both airplanes. Really enjoy your videos!

    Following along with your journey with bated breath. Would you be willing to add notes to the video description on your component list. The Garmin catalog is less than intuitive for non avionics folks when they try to spec out a system like your day/night vfr rig. The S20 I currently fly has an older 10inch Dynon Skyview system with matching radio and transponder. It works great, and is completely serviceable for day/night vfr, but having seen the quality of the new HDX panels, I’m a little envious.

    I installed 4 point seatbelts with inertia reels in my S20. This allows me to reach every part of the panel, something that allowed more flexibility as the panel was being designed and met the criteria you pointed out . ELT switch and a USB plug (for the co-pilot iPad) are on the far right but still comfortably reachable.

    • @paulnovacek836
      @paulnovacek836 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good plan Martin. Looks like that solves the problem of reaching the ELT switch. Too bad the stock kit does not come with those inertial reel belts.

    • @martinjmerritt
      @martinjmerritt ปีที่แล้ว

      @@paulnovacek836 Yes, too bad indeed. The change required welding anchor points into the ceiling of the baggage area. Only something that could be done before covering.

      @Bravo_X-Ray 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I am taking note on the seatbelt. Martin, which brand of 4 point seatbelts with inertia reels did you installed on your plane; is it compatible with S21?

    Hi Paul. I fall on the "other" side of the equation, preferring to fly them as opposed to building them. Hence I'm a little ahead of you in age and still don't have my own aircraft. Sad but I would like to encourage you in your journey and respect you for putting all the basics in place first. Enjoy the build and at the end you will have a beautiful airplane built by your own hands. All the very best!
