The Love of Cinema - Films of 1950: All About Eve
This week on the pod, It’s Dave’s Birthday! We open the episode with Dave’s mini-review of “Kraven the Hunter”, discussing the state of movie studios, and a fun voicemail from some podcast friends.

This week, we have our most contentious episode in years! มุมมอง 163หลายเดือนก่อน
This week, the boys rewatch “Sicario”, the Roger Deakins- I mean, Taylor Sheridan- I mean, Denis Villeneuve film that took 2015 by storm. The random year generator spun 2015, so we give you the context of the film year (5 Billion-dollar movies!), world events (Remember the FIFA scandal?), and then discuss what makes this film stand out above the rest of its peers. Set outside London but filmed in the USA for obvious reasons, we discuss this William Wyler masterpiece and whether or not the propagating was too much! Our phone number is 646-484-9298. The Love of Cinema - Films of 2001: AI Artificial Intelligence
มุมมอง 1222 หลายเดือนก่อน
This week, the boys discuss Stephen Spielberg’s AI: Artificial Intelligence, not to be confused with A1: The Steak Sauce. When Stanley Kubrick handed over the film, did 10-year-old John know he’d never ever be able to trust this film? Just kidding. He went in with an open mind. As did Dave, who pulled a Roger Ebert: hated it the first time he watched it but loved it this time around! Where did ...
The Love of Cinema - Films of 1959: North by Northwest
มุมมอง 3402 หลายเดือนก่อน
This week, after John briefly discusses "Goodrich", the new Michael Keaton picture written and directed by Hallie Meyers-Shyer, the boys take on another Hitchcock classic to highlight the film year 1959. Chosen by our random year generator, 1959 was a doozy for world and civil news, making a mistaken identity spy thriller the perfect film to highlight. You’ll have to listen to see if the boys t...

The random year generator spun 1974, so the boys head to 1937 L.A. to discuss the Roman Polanski, Robert Towne, Bob Evans, Jack Nicholson, and Faye Dunaway classic “Chinatown”. Often cited as one of the best movies with one of the best scripts in Hollywood history, plenty has been said about this film. Still, cinematographer Dave had never seen it, John went to fancy film school, and Jeff goes ...

For our 250th episode this week, the boys headed to Peking to discuss the Bernardo Bertolucci masterpiece ‘The Last Emperor.’ The random year generator spun 1987, and we set up the film year, noted some world events, and then discussed how great it is to no longer have fantastic films set in Chinese spoken in English. "The bed looks like a dead animal act" - loved Thelma Ritter's "Bertie". Great conversation, and yes, it is great watched in a group. Happy birthday Dave (you kid).
Shout out to the cat! Very photogenic, even in black and white.
Not translating the foreign languages, like the Dutch angles and the zither soundtrack, keep the audience off balance.
CUNTS@ SHOW THE FILM
where's the mini review for Agatha Dave???
I disagree that NbyNW isn't that highly rated among Hitchcock fans. I know of many who rate it very highly. It is easily in my top 3 of his movies and is also easily a top 50 of all time.
RIP Thirsty Koala
Indeed! Even their craft beer was good.
Congrats on 250 episodes guys!!
I'd add the scene where the Japanese villain (played by Ryuichi Sakamoto, who also won an Oscar for the music) directs a film crew to focus on the empress while the "Emperor Walz" plays in the background. Regarding the actors speaking English: most of the primary Chinese actors were from Hong Kong (at that time a British colony) and did speak English. Moreover, the Chinese dialect spoken in Hong Kong is not the same as would have been spoken in Northern China (Mandarin and Manchu) during the period covered in most of the film. Great film and interesting to hear your thoughts.
welcome back john! we missed you! also feel better dave ❤️🩹
i meant to call in for this one! i actually watched it the day you guys recommended it. ‘98 is my birth year so i felt compelled to check it out. great movie! i think my favorite line is john goodman saying “someone is holding my dick, and it ain’t me”
This is great! And agreed John Goodman is the king of the deadpan one liners here. Did you see the twist coming or did they get you?
they totally got me! i thought the twist was the poison cigarettes tricking the devil, so when the cat scene happened i was floored. cheeky bastards
beautiful episode guys. it’s interesting you guys didn’t bring up harry dean stanton’s work/friendship with david lynch, i love those weirdos together
Thanks! It gets mentioned briefly in there but once you bring up Lynch…. All you talk about is Lynch.. we agree, they are great together!
I think this film is so good. Its about the alienated people in society. I feel its more honest than current movies. The homophobia reflects the times, but also fits with the themes of fragile masculinity etc. As a gay guy it doesn't bither me, i think its meant to be provocative. This film is all about Joe Bucks search for his own identity. Hes been sexuzlised by his grandma from his childhood, and its only through his friendship with ratso that he can become his own person and shed the past traumas
I noticed the backgrounds!
The Oklahoma Kid
this had me going back and showing my partner being john malkovich so we can watch adaptation together. i love how charlie kaufman creates this synergy between absurd humor and soul crushing horrors
"PromoSM" 😬
I love how y'all buzzed each other apparently during the sped up 1969 movie-picking discussion🤣

In our defense… so many people have interacted with this post cause correcting others is a national pastime!
I like how Mark has been on this show 89 times, and I've (Matt) been on twice. Thanks, guys. BOOOOOOO. BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.
Don’t think we didn’t get the Princess Bride reference there… Mark is hereby suspended for reckless buzzing.
Anybody want a peanut? @@theloveofcinema
I love this creepy movie. It is upsetting in ways that are inexpressible, and also weirdly comic...such a deeply strange movie and definitely on my top ten.
Roger Ebert also hated Blue Velvet, so for what it's worth
If you love the King Family you need to watch the, "Hideous Sun Demon!"
It’s on the list now! Thanks.
Thank you.Really.Thank you.

@The Love of Cinema Podcast Fun fact: Helander's previous film Rare Exports is one of Cate Blanchett's favourite films of all time.
For anyone looking for Rare Exports in the US, you can currently find it on Peacock, Shudder and PlutoTV.
@@theloveofcinema I know.
We did say anyone... how many of you are there?? Are you legion?
@@theloveofcinema Okay. But no. No. I’m alone.
I can relate to people who walked out of the theater. I first watched Everything Everywhere on Blu ray at home and could only watch 15 minutes at a time cause it was just too much. By the end of the movie, I was like "Meh....pretty good. 7 out of 10". But I LOVED the film score/soundtrack so I went to see it a second time in a big movie theater.....where the whole movie clicked and I was blown out of my seat.
This is what we're talking about! Big screen, the energy of a crowd.. it doesn't always go well but when it does...
Don't know what "hilarious" D&D campaigns or games people are playing that involve fat dragons, guys who walk in straight lines, along with constant Marvel-like one-liners, humor and big fight action where barely anything is taken seriously as seen in this movie. Yeah, apparently they got all the monsters, references and locations right but that's about it as far as any D&D feel goes.
Well.. for starters this one... they played the whole thing through as a campaign before filming. Secondly, Dragonlance saga. Lastly, your D&D is not everyone's D&D. Our campaigns had the one liners and ridiculous situations. New rule, It's ok to let something that isn't exactly what you wanted be cool. Also the Bard is useless, if that's not D&D AF I don't know what is.
@ 1:28:32 did Jeff just wtf completely hijack Jack's story?
Possible reasons this happened... 1. Drunk and a random thought popped out his mouth 2. Needed to pee 3. Threatened cause Jack had such cool stories.. He has been punished.
BRAVO JOHN for calling them out for that Eternals episode. Dave and Jeff lied to us. We will never heal as a nation.
I stand by everything I said in that episode... and we'll find out how much cause it's scheduled for a rewatch this week...
do you take movie review requests?
We sure do! linktr.ee/theloveofcinema

Good review as always, gents. Would never have guessed Dave would be keener on Shazam 2 than JW4, but i do think his crappy screening experience definitely colored his viewing of the movie. Wonder if he would've liked it more with a better audience. My order goes: 2, 4, 1, and 3. Also, JEFF -- don't talk shit about carrots. carrots are awesome. Roasted carrots with fingerling potatotes? DUDE. THAT ISH IS BOMB.
I've already updated my order to 1,2,4,3 now that the rage of my poor screening is passing.
80 FOR BRADY! 80 FOR BRADY! 80 FOR BRADY! 80 FOR BRADY! 80 FOR BRADY! 80 FOR BRADY! 80 FOR BRADY! 80 FOR BRADY! 80 FOR BRADY! 80 FOR BRADY!
Glad that Strangelove was made before the kind of over the top idiocy of Don't Look Up became common place or it'd be full of morons running around screaming about nuclear armageddon while CG graphics super imposed over nuclear explosions rack up a kill count of each mushroom cloud because it'd presume that audiences can't figure out that nukes are bad and would fall asleep otherwise. Would totally suck right? Oh wait, you guys loved that dumb blatant, on-the-nose "hilarious" piece of trash too.
Gotta give you guys props for tackling this movie 👍 Not an easy thing for three dudes to navigate haha. I think it’s unfortunate that you seemed to see it mostly as a women’s issues movie and the purely human element was lost. It’s funny how films about men tend to be universal but movies about women are just for women or there to speak about some specific women’s issue. I realize the context is pretty difficult to ignore. I suppose many men would feel vilified or attacked (none of you said that, just generalizing if you will permit me). All I thought about was not whether this kind of conversation has been happening before or if it should be happening, but how many times I’ve had this conversation with myself in my mind, arguing all of those points. So I kept going back forth trying to decide which one was valid, and coming to realize they all were and that I’ve chosen different paths in different situations. Everyone processes trauma differently. And I don’t mean for issues concerning men vs women exclusively or even predominantly. Anyone who has ever experienced an abusive situation (at whoever’s hands) or has felt powerless or voiceless should be able to relate to the dilemma they’re tackling. But we haven’t reached a point in our society where men can identify with what women are saying, allow themselves to learn not about women, but about themselves as humans too and see themselves in their place, actually empathize. But I can see how the specifics of the story can make that difficult. I do wish we can get to a point where men won’t feel excluded from having a personal experience when listening to women and won’t just be, at best, supporters of women’s rights, but will feel truly connected as people. Yes, I’ll drink now 😂
P.S. one line that has stayed with me (I saw this a couple months ago) is one of the young girls saying, “We’re leaving because we can’t stay.”
People who haven't discovered your channel are missing out. Please keep it going.
Thanks! Rest assured... we're over 160 episodes in and not sick of talking about movies yet. (The beer might help)
Thanks for the interesting discussion about this amazing film guys. Really enjoyed it.
Thanks for the feedback! Remember we also take requests on the Linktree!
I've seen three Rylance movies - The Outfit, Don't Look Up and Bones and All.
Dune 2 is the second half of the book and Paul Atreides is still the lead character. But Zendaya has a bigger role this time. Loved Bones, btw.
Thanks for the feedback and for listening! I think co-host Jeff counted Don't Look Up as a 2021 movie, but loves that you've seen three films featuring/promoting the career of his favorite working actor. We loved talking about The Outfit earlier this summer. Such a surprisingly good film considering it takes place in one location with 3 rooms.
Great review!
First of all, it would have been great if there was a woman also in this conversation. Second, Domink basically not only used a real person who is dead and can't defend for herself, and showed her being exploited over and over but he also made a choice in ignoring all her achievements as an actress, business woman and person in her lifetime. He just abused her again and again for "art".
First of all, you're not wrong. Second, despite being a man at least one of the hosts pretty much agreed with you.
Of course Dave likes she-hulk, its hysterical
Dave says Thank You for the validation...
Uh...Jeff? Jeff?? Who told you that Dasein means "the one?"
As long as you gentleman interact a bit more with your subscribers, I believe you will genuinely do quite well on here. While the argument that Elvis stole anything really is way off, especially as the main citation given for this is his rendering of 'Hound Dog' originally done by Big Mama Thornton. However, Hound Dog was written by two white Jewish gentleman in Lieber & Stoller, and they were among Elvis' most prolific songwriters. Elvis' version of Hound Dog was also in no way like Thornton's (who's version I prefer) & the song was not only written by Lieber & Stoller, but Elvis' version was given to him by the white group Freddie Bell and the Bellboys. Factually, Elvis was also quite loved by the black community when he started as he was also fighting the white establishment who was trying to ban him and Rock N Roll. So, consciously or not, he actually broke down the barrier for black artists to let their music through. This is acknowledged by everyone from BB King to Little Richard to Jackie Wilson, who also said - in his view - every other black artist he saw copied Elvis. Elvis was also very supportive of black artists and even helped Johnny Bragg, the lead singer of the Prisonaires, record their hit 'Walking in the Rain' at Sun Records in 1953, the year before Elvis hit big in the South with 'That's Alright Mama.' As many don't realize this, but Elvis had a bit of a stutter and so did Bragg. While it was Elvis helping Bragg with his enunciation to get through 'Walkin' in the Rain' that cemented their friendship. With Elvis, too, also going to the prison where Bragg was held to meet and offer money for lawyers and more, etc. Elvis' best friend as a boy growing up in Tupelo was also a black gentleman by the name of Sam Bell (now sadly deceased;-( , who was one of Luhrmann's key sources about Elvis for the movie. Bell grew up with his grandparents and Elvis' backyard buttressed up to Bell's grandparent's yard which was directly behind Elvis' home to the south. The scenes of Elvis looking in at the brothel, etc., being a recreation of the times he would visit Shakerag, a thriving little black community about a mile south of Bell's home. It was there that Elvis met Muddy Waters as a child and other blacks in the community took an interest in him b/c he was so polite and also had a fascination w/music.
We love interacting with our subscribers and anyone else who wants to throw in a comment here and there. This is a very detailed and thorough response to a question that was asked on the show. Was the subject sugar coated or not. It was asked because Dave seriously did not know and wanted to know. The thesis you have answered with has been enlightening and seems to be thoroughly researched. As always we welcome discussion, and we hope you've seen the movie and not just been triggered by the innocent question. If you haven't seen the movie.. see it as soon as you can in Dolby Cinema as the mix is fantastic.
@@theloveofcinema Appreciate the response; enjoyed the movie and wish you the best of luck with your channel! Best wishes!!!
So raised by wolves is pretty much the sequel to prometheus that we wanted to see the androids are way better than David.
I still haven't watched the final episode of S2 cause then there would be no more Raised by Wolves.
I liked Tom in the roll. He had the drawing power to get peoples attention that this wasn’t going to be same old thing about Elvis. To me it was brilliant
I think everyone on the show agrees with you. It was a very "warts and all" portrayal that should be recognized.
bad biopic the best is the last 10 minutes
