905 Round-Up: Crombie's Housing Plan and Ford Hits Back on Trump
Coming off our previous episode with Evan Scrimshaw, the Ontario Liberals announced a major part of their housing platform. Their plan would eliminate development charges from municipalities, replace them with a provincial fund, end the Land Transfer Tax for new home buyers and bring in phased-in rent controls for renters. Is this what progressives seek to win themselves to the Ontario Liberals? And are we going to be eating our words after our previous episode? Well yes and no. We discuss why this is good and its shortcomings in actually getting housing built.
Our second story focuses on how Premier Doug Ford of all people in Canada is the one punching back at President Donald Trump. In retaliation to Trump's proposed 25% tariffs, his promise to cut off electricity to American states is the standout statement in what is shaping up to be a trying time between our two countries. Joel walks back his initial statement on social media and both of our hosts ask, is this what's needed?

    Because of police extravaganza budget taxpayers have to pay more and more from their paycheque which will affect their expenses and we have to cut from somewhere but the paycheque and benefits for police keep rising to keep them more comfortable. And I don't know why Canadian bring police in every aspect of their lives? And I don't know why the politicians always back them up?

      You need the police in order to keep law and order in any society. Not sure if you are suggesting defunding the police as many American cities have attempted only to reverse that decision after a huge surge in crime. The issue is with our gutless politicians and a strong police union.

    Teaching conditions are most definitely an issue regarding retention. People want to believe that now we’re post-Covid, everything has returned to normal. It hasn’t. Due to synchronous & asynchronous learning, students weren’t really held accountable for being online. And it’s hard to deliver lessons virtually. So we now have students with significant learning gaps. It doesn’t get better with time; the gaps just become more pronounced. Throw in deficits in age-appropriate behaviours, and an increase in mental health issues, students are struggling. And that leads to an increase in violence in schools, and students acting out because they’re not able to meet provincial expectations. The post-Covid era has also seen an increase in anxiety and mental health issues with students. They are aware they’re falling behind, but are stressed with catching up so that increases anxiety, which often leads to students staying home. Instead of having supports in the classroom to help students with academics, social skills, and mental health, we’ve cut funding significantly. Our public education system is overburdened, and teachers are tapped out.

    Doug Ford goes with the votes rather than his own personal interests. Why is that a bad thing? Do we want another McGuinty who stays the course and costs the province billions in order to save 3 seats, because the NIMBY's in Niagara weren't happy? Or do we prefer Wynne, who tried to sweep for McGuinty?

    • @905erPodcast
      @905erPodcast 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You want to rethink this one after he's spent Ontario into more of a deficit. Given hundreds of millions of dollars to Big Corp Breweries to get out of a deal that was set to expire in two years. Unable to find doctors, schools crumbling and nothing being done on housing. Rent is skyrocketing here due to his policies of privatization of post-secondary. Also, every policy of the Liberals he came in and reversed to the cost of millions of dollars he's put back into action. Also have you checked your energy bill since Ford's come to power? It's more expensive than it was under McGuinty or Wynne. Just FYI.
