Thanks Steve. Lovely & wonderful for Ash Wed. It's unfortunate that RC rubrics discourage organ music during Lent. When I was music director/liturgist for 13 years in Brooklyn, I really tried to be completely faithful to the prescribed pared down (organ use) during Lent, but I always missed playing many wonderful pieces that are so inspirational, contemplative & moving during Lenten season. I tried to use organ minimally & sung pieces replaced organ prelude & organ postludes were cut. I'm not sure if I'd be so strict now. It's a shame to deprive folks of beautiful music that enhances their prayers & worship. On Good Friday, I always loved having my schola sing Drop, Drop Slow Tears & then play the Persichetti chorale on the tune (I did bend the rules now & then...LOL!). My last Good Friday at OLV RC I did the Liszt Via Crucis for Good Friday service with my quartet. th-cam.com/video/bWujf0vkLlQ/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=KatolisTV I've always loved the music of Jehan Alain. The 3 modal chorales are wonderful little pieces. I'd just gotten Litanies under my belt when I departed from WC, thanks to Ray. I was completely inspired hearing M.C. Alain finish a Notre Dame Paris packed Sunday concert with the piece. Ray told me MCA had said (more or less) of the descending left hand chords at the end of Litanies "Just whack them out." LOL! I recently found the following from Jehan, himself: Bernard Gavoty recalls the way Jehan told him the piece should be played: ..."When you play this piece, you must create the impression of an ardent conjuration. Prayer is not a lament, but an overpowering tornado flattening everything in its way. It's also an obsession: you must fill men's ears with it - and God's ears too! If at the end you don't feel wrung out, it means you've neither understood it nor played it as I want it played. Keep to a tempo as fast as clarity will permit. Don't worry about the rapid chords in the left hand near the end. At the right speed that passage is unplayable. But rubato isn't out of the question, and it's really better to "botch" it a bit than play at a speed which would deform my Litanies."
