    • @accentamazing

      Thanks! Of course we can work on the specific accent features that are indicators of native-ness. Also, speakers of Russian are my biggest student demographic, so I have lots of lessons specific for Russian speakers and Slavic speakers in general, which is my niche!

      Yes I believe /x/ is common now, but what I really like is how the letter χ in Ancient Greek was aspirated [kʰ] as many English k sounds are, although modern Greek has lost the aspiration

      The long O isn’t a diphthong in General American English

    • @accentamazing
      @accentamazing 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@tricky_english Perhaps you're talking about phonologically, yes it can be "considered" theoretically a monophthong, but phonetically and physically it is absolutely a diphthong in American English as well as most types of English dialects - i'll leave this video here because this lady does a great job of illustrating the American /oʊ/ diphthong th-cam.com/video/PAOmKrjVxpg/w-d-xo.html

    • @tricky_english
      @tricky_english 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@accentamazing The first part and the second part of a diphthong should be used as a single vowel sound. Let’s take the diphthong ou/ow as in house/how. The first part is the short o sound as in hot and the second part is the long OO as in goose, NOT the /ʊ/. I have the cot-caught merger and I don’t use the /ɔ/. The long O as in old, cold, gold, note CANNOT be made with two distinct vowel sounds.

    • @accentamazing
      @accentamazing 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@tricky_english it seems like you are talking about phonology as I mentioned in the previous response. Yes, the /oʊ/ vowel in "only" and "don't" is cannot be broken down into psychologically distinct phonemes, but phonetically it starts as an [o] and then has an [ʊ] offglide and is therefore in this manner a diphthong. Without that offglide [ʊ] you'd get a Scottish accented "don't" [doːnt]

    Not Polish, but I have a Polish oc who immigrated to the US when he was 15, and I find it difficult to know for sure how good he would be at English. He is a polyglot who has been heavily immersed in English, and other languages, before they moved, and I do think he would have paid close attention to his pronounication by listening to movies(if he could get them) and youtube videos. Also would talk with English speaking tourists, though that is more because appearently he looks like he is very good at giving directions XD So my idea is that he is fluent, leaning into expert native level, and at his job he pays good attention to how he speaks because he has to be clear, but in private he might slip into those mistakes from time to time again.
