    This book is the basis for HIMYM. Now it all makes sense. (By the way, I still like the series as a whole, but the more I watch it, the more I realize Ted, the protagonist, is a hypocritical D-Bag. Barney was honest about his dishonesty; Ted was the one lying to himself.)

    The one thing this book successfully argues is that working at your job will never provide abstract value to your life. But they think that the reader will reach the conclusion that...blind obedience to your job is good?

    I used to work at a textbook publisher. I took a job in the mailroom to get my foot in the door, and found out that, despite the fact that I had an english degree (one of the only requirements for an editorial assistant job), they wouldn't hire me out of the mailroom, because, "Working in the mailroom makes it seem like you're not serious." I said that I needed health insurance, and I was showing loyalty to the company. Crickets. Then they made us read WMmC, and got mad at me because I knew how to interpret the book's propaganda. Nothing has radicalized me more than working and having bosses.

    Your boss: "We have a change in policy. 10% of you will be fed into a wood-chipper for our CEO's amusement. Here's a book to help you deal with change." Worker: "Why are you doing this to us?" Boss: "That worker doesn't understand personal responsibility. Toss him into the wood chipper first!"

    We wonder why such idiotic books become bestsellers. We fail to appreciate the sheer volume of nonsensical "self-help" or "business" books that have been published in the past 50 years. The books that make it onto this podcast are the outliers.

    I've read this book and liked the message. (I'm 5 minutes in, so my mind isn't changed yet) That being said, this book is the most anti-corporate book I can imagine. Why would any company force its employees to read it when the core message is when your job or life becomes stale, put your running shoes on and GO! To me, that is one more reason why corporate America is so dumb.

    • @KVW110
      @KVW110 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Finished listening, and I was right. I still like the message, but that's because I never saw it through a corporate lens. I've experienced the sudden job loss, relationship loss, and life changes. There is no choice but to change. I liked the background info they provided. And it expounded my knowledge and loathing of corporate America.

    I'm wondering if Sam has ever talked at length about the general profile of the mass shooters in the US, and how to screen for possible future attackers and what to do to stop them. It seems like any discussion about this issue falls between a sarcastic "oh of course, you want to blame white men for everything!" and "lol pathetic incels lashing out at innocent civilians", sometimes from the same people. I get the feeling of being unjustly blamed when someone points out that some problem seems to be mostly the xx group's problem, and you happen to be a part of xx group, but there is a permission to do this only one way (like in this example, to do it to muslims in the western world, and to westerners in the muslim world), and people don't want to see the double standard. If someone pretends to be a member of the "intellectual dark web", i would expect they don't shy away from difficult conversations even if they risk pissing off majority of their audience. But this whole skeptic circle jerk is more interested in dunking on whoever they don't agree with then actual skepticism about all their core beliefs.

    Many of us whose childhoods were blighted by religion found expressions of atheism ("new" or otherwise) to be refreshing, and takedowns of religion to be actually important and interesting. Many of us still feel that way, even if folks like Harris and Dawkins have turned out to be racist, sexist douchebags.

    I have recently attended 3 open evenings for secondary schools (UK resident) as my daughter is due to start September 2025. Of the three schools we have attended, two had presentations by headmasters, referencing Haidts' new book. That's 66.67% of our sample. I plan to take this data in lots of weird and wonderful directions, making lots of spurious claims and presenting them as well evidenced theories. There will be a book, of course. There's always a book.
