Matt, thanks a million for this. After decades in the music business, I’m about to do a small stand-up set for a friend’s anniversary as a surprise. Obviously I want to come up with all original material, but have never ventured into this type of writing. Your breakdown here is beyond helpful. I’m going to write my bit, and if it goes over well, I might take it to an open mic or something - at least if being in my mid-forties isn’t too late a start!? I get what you're saying about pen vs keyboard but I think thats generational. I cant be creative with a pen because I can barely write, my generation was taught to type at like age 6. I can type like 100 words per minute with one hand..... Its WAY more creative for me to write with a keyboard because I get free flowing ideas. I can use different notes apps to lay out the screen how I want... if I write, its going to take me like an hour to write every sentence and like, im going to fuck up the page with words i cant read and have to scribble over them or erase the page into dust...

My daughter was also born with a bunch of medical conditions so your childhood health challenges resonate. But my heart really goes out to you... you were born in the boogie down. Poor kid. 😂 Queens hospitals have the best nasty nurses so we got much more trauma aka better joke material.
