MPA Finance: First Steps for Marine Managers Webinar
Marine protected areas (MPAs) are important tools for supporting the conservation and recovery of marine ecosystems. MPAs also provide critical co-benefits to nearby communities by improving fisheries management, enhancing tourism, and supporting resilient coastal communities. Despite their importance and value, it can be difficult to secure funding to support the long-term success and ongoing needs of MPAs. To help managers and planners better understand MPA finance opportunities, the Reef Resilience Network developed a new MPA Finance Toolkit in partnership with the Blue Nature Alliance: reefresilience.org/mpa-finance/
- Lihla Noori of the Blue Nature Alliance provided an overview of the MPA Finance Toolkit and shared insights on practical steps managers can take to explore financing options for their own sites.
- Allen Cedras, Chief Executive Officer of the Seychelles Parks and Gardens Authority (SPGA), drew on his experience as a site-level manager and expertise in MPA financing to provide a real-world example of MPA financing in practice. He discussed the history of SPGA’s financing, including the structure of the SPGA, its transition from a government entity to a public-private enterprise, and the SPGA user fee system.
- Michael McGreevey, Director of Conservation Investments at Conservation International, also joined us for the question-and-answer session.

when you analyse on how much is going into the water because of a practise learned in the middle ages? when we look at what we use water for, seems such a waste to crap in it, and then drink it, ,I mean I have standards too? when that human waste is the best fertilizer if composted properly? when you just look at the value of iot alone is unbelievable, and we waste it on the oceans not thinking one day its gonna hurt our ecosystem, I know everyone is grossed out in even talking abouty it , what can I say, 80percent untreated, why is it not being composted? I mean if you cannot afford to treat it, then why not composte it on dry land? must be they have no dry land? so many problems, >3 and our discharge is going to get higher to, some homes three wash rooms, yes low flushing toilets, lol, I know not funny but dark ghumour, what >3 I wounder what is the code to the Oceans? okay a run down we crap in the water and then have people and machines work at getting it out of the water, when its what around 90percent water to begin with, our crap? depends on how much fibre you had, huh, solids? I agree with you we should think more about what we do!after all its 2022 and we need to share all the knowledge on environments needs , I feel dat, just an opinon

I just have one suggestion.......whatever it is that you're doing in the background that sounds like sharpening a pencil or flipping pages sometimes, you should not do while you're recording a video. It's distracting and itwas hard to stay focused on what you were saying at times when it was really loud.

Thanks to UNEP and ICRI for including our Corals for Conservation restoration sites as a case study in the report. For self-funded graduates students and researchers, it may still be possible to get a permit to enter our COVID free Fiji. We welcome research in our sites, and if people can successfully test the waters and get permission to come in, we can provide accommodation and field access support.

This is a pretty neat tool, what is the origin of the source data - do local government/council bodies provide any GIS shapefiles/layers or is this data collected onground and is more modern? It would be great to have this information available on a global scale, taking into account bathymetry, tide data, information on local currents etc. to help assist local reef restoration efforts :)

Really interesting experiment! I have lived in Florida my entire life and had never knew they even existed! I am trying to do more research on them, but I can't find much. Are these species regulated by FWC? Is this crab species found in all Florida waters or just in the Keys? At what depths are these crabs typically found? Also, is this crab species abundant or are they a threatened or an endangered species? If you could answer these questions or point me to a database on this species, I would be very grateful!

Thank you to all those who joined the webinar. Just to clarify a point...if you have already conducted surveys at some sites in the post-bleaching period i.e. after August 2016, there is no need to resurvey these sites in Sept/Oct 2017. The data from the surveys already conducted will be sufficient to contribute to the initiative. The post-bleaching surveys in Sept/Oct 2017 should only be done at sites which have not been surveyed since August 2016.
