Is Polaroid SX-70 Film Worth Shooting?
Ever since getting the Polaroid I-2, I’ve been wanting to try the SX-70 film. For my first experience, I wanted to do things properly, and since I don’t fully trust the metering inside the I-2, I used my Sekonic L-308X light meter instead. While I’m not entirely happy with the results, the first two shots in the video turned out quite nice, so this is definitely something I want to explore further.
If you have any suggestions on how to shoot this film better, please let me know!

Leica Q3 43 Photowalk in St. Elmo Bay
มุมมอง 38514 วันที่ผ่านมา
This photowalk turned out to be more dramatic than usual. I read in the news that an orange warning had been issued, and I thought it would be a great opportunity to head to Malta’s Grand Harbor via St. Elmo. However, I ended up getting drenched in seawater when a wave hit me and couldn’t make it to the Grand Harbor because the area was flooded.

Oh la la merci! Buon Ann!
Can't Sony profile / style be configured to give the same result? It can be set to resemble (almost perfectly) Fujifilm film simulations, I guess it can also emulate this...
Yeah, someone also suggested extracting the CUBE files from the app. And since it’s quite an open secret at this point where that 60MP sensor is coming from, it should be very easily adaptable to some Sony cameras.
Yu yuan? Beautiful park and it's indeed disappointing to see how underexposed the shots turned out. Surely not the light meter's fault.
It’s the Chinese Garden of Serenity in Malta. I will try using a spot meter and averaging the exposure out for my next pack. Hopefully I get better results.
Some great depth to those shots, dramatic weather certainly makes for dramatic photographs :D
Thank you! I was hoping to get to the breakwater, but the area was completely flooded 😂
I agree, I've started doing these things about 2 weeks ago, and it's better, I think. I've subscribed.
Thank you for subscribing! Is there any particular content you’re interested in?
Как у Q3 с автофокусом дела? У Q2 быстрым его не назовешь!(((
It’s better, much better, but definitely not Sony better 😂
I'm convinced Leica can't make a digital M to save their life! While I enjoy my M240 for the shooting experience, I don't think I could ever pay full retail on their digital system considering neither their lenses are better nor is their implementation of technology is done reliably. The one benefit however is the resale value holds for the times you realize you need to recoup your investment.
I’m really hoping the M12 changes this.
@@BernardGatt I'm sure a lot of people have spent a decent fortune saying the same thing after every new generation of digital Leica since the M8!
Yeah, I agree; it’s extremely hard to justify. Personally, I wouldn’t want to shoot with any other 35mm camera besides my M6/MP, but when it comes to digital, there are so many options.
This is such a relaxing video, great work!
Great photowalk with Leica Q3 43!
Lovely colours! Have you done any editing to the photos or is just Leica magic?
Thank you! They’re not out of camera JPEGs. The main reason is that I’m trying to achieve a consistent look in my digital photos, and I want to be able to replicate it across different cameras.
Markets. The best place to take maximum out of a camera. Love the video man🙋
Thank you, really appreciate your comment! There's so much action going on, I love markets.
😂🎉
Love the first shot, did you get any more of the inside perhaps? Would be cool to see more of it. Also the one of the port is a classic. Regarding the one of the ladies eating, it’s perfect that way I find. It’s enough out of the focus to add some mystery but it’s clear what they are doing and the combination with the advert on the tram .. lovely! Great shots mate :)
Thank you ❤️ unfortunately I didn’t, i’ll try to go back and ask if its ok to take some shots inside, it would look amazing in B&W.
The digital M have been flawed ever since the M8. I've wasted fortunes expecting each generation to at last be less laggy and less buggy than the previous one. I've given up on the whole idea after my new M10 had to be sent back to Wetzlar and stayed there 4 months. Kept my wonderful M6 purchased in 1994 and 3 lenses.
Yeah, you’d expect a camera with limited features to be super snappy. Imagine using an M11-D and it freezes up 😬
@ exactly. The film Leica M were snappier than all the SLRs of the time (no mirror to lift before triggering the shutter). They were quasi instantaneous. The coupled rangefinder was faster than the groundglass of the SLR to focus precisely enough to get satisfactory impression of perfect focus on any film you loaded (with wide to standard lenses anyway). A fantastic tool. In the digital age, the Leica M are slower to boot, slower to wake from sleep and slower to focus than the lowest end cheapo MILC. It is senseless toy that seduces buyers through a mix of artisan luxury appeal and nostalgia driven marketing.
Very great street photography, keep it up!
Thank you 🙇♂️
I'm exactly the same; the Leica Chrome profile is *really* good! It's a sleeper hit - I'm sure it'll get a cult following over the next year or two as people realize how good it is.
Some stunning architecture there. Lovely!
It’s very beautiful inside the fortress, will eventually do a walk there 😁
Sorry if it’s a stupid question, but what is leica Chrome ?
It’s a look you apply in camera, if you’re familiar with Fujifilm, it’s like their film simulations.
Hmm, there’s a CCD look about these images. Very nice✌️🇦🇺
Sick always loved the old design of the film
Not sure what to expect, it will be the first time I shoot SX70 film.
It's no reflection of your own skills as a photographer, but I'd find it extremely frustrating to visit a city with interesting architecture and not be able to fit a single whole building into the frame. A lovely camera no doubt, but extremely restrictive.
Yeah, I find that the OG Q3 is more “for everyone” in terms of focal length, you also have a 60mp sensor so, if you need to, crop. Personally I just never connected with the 28, that’s why I sold my Q2.
I’m amazed Leica actually went with a tighter focal length. The 28mm is for everyone but it feels the 43mm does a better job in making you feel more comfortable and you don’t need to always fit everything in the frame ( say a building or mountain ). And let’s not forget how much everyone cropped on the original. It’s a feature no doubt, but this feels more what the majority would have wanted from the very beginning. Definitely considering in this camera tbh. Great video btw. 👍
The beauty of the 43 for street photography is that you can get the shot from a farther distance so as not so be so intrusive.
People include too much stuff in their 28 field of view, and mostly produce boring pictures as a result.
The Q3 43’s lens indeed limits wide field photography in relatively tight spaces. In relatively wide spaces, effectively wide angle shots can be created by stitching together multiple shots taken with the 43 mm lens. I took a new Q3 43 and my M11 Monochrom (w/a Leica Super-Elmar-M 21 mm f/3.4, a terrific lens) on a 10 day trip in China this last Fall and found that I used the Q3 43 much more often (and I LOVE the M11M).
Just wish they would provide a DNG version rather than JPG
Someone on Threads tried to use Capture One's Match Look feature, it got close, but not enough.
Yeah Lightroom should let you toggle through these looks via profiles for dng
Thanks for saying this. I was going to ask if raw or only jpeg. If cameras (all brands) can add sharpness , contrast & the like adjustments in camera, I don't understand why not at least in a tiff format or something so one still has the option of a full raw file. I believe that having the untouched raw file for editing (or not) is the reason camera companies don't provide these treatment looks in the raw format even though one has to actually select the treatment knowing that the original raw would be altered. Just a thought.
The Leica Looks are just standard CUBE files. You can create an Adobe Camera RAW Profile from them and apply them to every camera you want. Though it should be one with the 61MP Sony sensor base in order to work. Profiles can be extracted from the app and Leica conveniently supplies you with the decryption keys if you are looking for it 😅
I will definitely look into this! Thanks!
Oh wow, great shots!
Thank you! Glad you like them ❤️
Life and people are any interesting thing. No one is on the exact same journey or the exact same path. It is a good feeling to be confident on the path you are on.And it is a good feeling to be confident on the path I am on. For me, I am not yet to the place where I want analog film development. Maybe I get there. Instead, I got the M11-D, which photographs like an analog camera, but whose end output is like a digital camera. It is DEFINITELY not for everyone, but it is perfect on my path.
The M11-D is a very interesting camera. The point about my video is not to say that the M11 is a bad camera, I just think that if you're shooting film with a Leica M, it kind of doesn't make sense to own a digital M.
Wow ! Your video came at a time when I wanted to try new film experiences in low light. I was wondering: what film did you use for the ending shots?
Great! Hope you found it useful! The end shots were with Kentmere 400 pushed at 3200.
@BernardGatt Damn ! I thought there would be more grain.
It’s super clean looking, and it makes sense really. 400 speed films are finer in grain than 3200.
Hey Bernard, my name is Johnny and I'm a freelance logo designer, would you love to have a logo for your channel to have a memorable branding to help to attract new audience to discover you and click in? Let me know if you interested and I would love to design it for you to :-)
My wishlist is for film to be back to $14 per roll or whatever was cheaper back then.
It really depends on what you’re shooting, something like Kentmere 400 goes for around $6, I think the most expensive part at this point is dev & scan.
Get yourself an m8.
What is that heater u are using for the water ?
It’s the Cinestill TCS-1000, but any other sous vide should work.
To be fair, artists use dozens of algorithms in software like PS without ever fully understanding the math behind the tools. AI doesnt just have to be full blown image generation. It could be small scale tools like removing objects and such faster and cleaner.
In the full video I go more in depth about my thoughts on generative vs assistive Al. But considering how divisive this subject is, I would expect adobe to be more cautious when saying such things.
I'm enjoying my array of Canon VT Deluxe rangefinders. *Digital is for fun *Film is forever.
not so concerned about autofocus as I am with the camera not having an EVF.
Yeah, an M is designed to be MF and that’s fine.
Like the Sony RX1 and it's detachable EVF, the M cameras have the Visoflex 2 EVF. Your statement is incorrect.
I agree with every word.
Every excitement wears out and we look for a new one …..
straight to the point, short and sweet, informative, thank you
I'm looking for a homeless M11 if you would like to donate.
Autofocus these days is more accurate than man's eyesight.
It is very stupid that Leica only make M cameras with OVF, a "M" with EVF or a "Q" camera with M mount will be great. But I am very happy with my Sony "Leica" A7RV which have the 60 megapixels Sony that Leica uses, but the Sony "Leica" Camera are half the price with better specs !
Except that Leica does make the Visoflex 2 EVF for those times you think you need an EVF... focus peaking and everything. I had to buy a separate EVF for my Sony RX1, so not a unique situation. Sony's EVF's are WAY worse than the Leica EVF's (much lower resolution, than, say the Q3). They don't even have a rangefinder, their menus are convoluted and their app is not nearly as good. Just sayin'
@@teseglet Oh, so fist you have to buy a rangefinder camera that you do not want for more than double what you need and then you have to biy an extern EVF, great, not! I have NO problems what so ever with Sony menu, just customize your own! What app? Just sayin
not sure I understand why you need to use Leica glass. it does have some advantages, mainly 6 bit coding. but some voigtlander stuff is as good or better than the leica stuff, and vice versa. the apo lanthars and ultron 2 lenses are fantastic, definitely good for the 60MP. and I own some nice Leica lenses, including the 50 APO and 35 FLE (I own more Leica lenses than any other brand as it happens). someone else mentioned the X2D, Ive got one of those too, and it's a great camera. but that and the Q3 43 are not what I'd consider "modern", the real modern experience is a Sony A7RV or Fuji GFX 100 II IMO.
Maybe "have to" was a bit too strong, I do own VL lenses and have taken some of my favorite photos (mainly because of their character) on the M11, still I think if you're buying a ~$9k body you will eventually gravitate to buying Leica glass, its one of the main reasons to buy a Leica anyway.
Most Voigtlander/Zeiss glass is absolutely fine for use with a 60mp digital M for significantly less cash. I used to work for Leica and have used almost every Leica M lens. Leica lenses have their (somewhat) unique characteristics which you need to decide if they are worth the premium for you, but resolution is not necessarily one of them.
Agreed, some VL lenses are just incredible, but still, if you're buying a ~$9k body you will eventually gravitate to buying Leica glass, its one of the main reasons to buy a Leica anyway.
@@BernardGatt agree to disagree. I buy the best lens for the output and budget. For example the Voigtlander 28/1.5 is superior to the 28/1.4 Summilux for my purposes. The Zeiss 35/1.4 ZM Distagon is superior to the 35mm Summilux ASPH. etc.
The voitlander 35 and 50 apo are every bit as sharp and in some cases actually sharper than the Leica APO…
@@BernardGattI’ve used a 10$ plastic wide angle Diana Lomo lens on my M10-D and Nikon Z8 with fantastic artistic results. It fits very well in the collection of rare and ultra rare Leica modern and esoteric vintage lenses. They all get rotated as do the wonderful Voigts
Thats basically it! Im back on the sl2 s manually. M12 needs a high res evf otherwise there no point.
Love the SL2-S, I also use it to scan negatives 😄
I stopped after the M240 , i have now a Q43, ill but again a M if they get a real built in EVF , i dont need AF , i use MF with the Q nearly all the time
Yeah, AF on an M is unnatural, that should stay as is, but a hybrid RF/EVF would definitely be a nice addition.
Why u haven’t had these feelings by picking up the normal Q2 or Q3? Dont think its your fantastic M11s fault mate 😂
I had a Q2, fantastic camera but really hated the focal length. I’m always shooting 35 or 50 so 28 is too wide for me. I still shoot on the M system btw, I almost exclusively shoot on the M6/MP, it’s just that when I need a digital camera, I need a proper digital camera.
I ditched the M11 for the Hasselblad X2D. A photography only camera with the best colours I’ve ever seen from a digital file, an excellent EVF, the best UI ever, better AF than the Leica M (!!😂), huge built in storage, lenses at least as good as any Leica I’ve ever used (including the 35 Apo) and it’s actually cheaper…
It’s been popping up very frequently recently, it’s certainly a beautiful camera and the UI, fantastic ❤️
The Hasselblad is beautiful. I went with GFX. I loved my M11 but old age caught with my ability to accurately focus with a rangefinder.
Very very good points.
Les prix flambent de plus en plus .cela devient fou .que les fabricants se calment d autant que les appareils ne tiendront pas durant 10 ans comme des années 70/ 90
Leica will probably make the sensor optional on their next camera.
Where did you get this lenshood to remedy the no filter in the standard lenshood situation please? Link? (in Europe preferably).
It’s one of the standard Q3 accessories, the round hood, see: leica-camera.com/en-AT/photography/accessories/lens-hoods/lens-hood-q-black
Using the Meta Ray-Ban glasses for the first person POV, love it!
Thank you! It’s not my usual setup so I had to improvise, turned out well!
That was informative thanks! I love the idea of pushing kentmere this much and still getting pretty good results. I am looking to find a good solution for low light photography and it's one of the best solutions so far. The only thing that bothers me is the developing times. I heard it's possible to push by using a higher temperature instead of longer times but I need to read up on this.
Glad you found it useful! Yeah, development times are the only reason I don’t do this more often. I haven’t tried using higher temperatures but wouldn’t mind experimenting to find the sweet spot.
