Devils Tree
Gerard John Schaefer Jr. was an American murderer and suspected serial killer, known as the Killer Cop, the Hangman and the Butcher of Blind Creek, who was convicted of the 1972 murder and mutilation of two teenage girls in Port St. Lucie, Florida.
Their scattered skeletal remains were discovered close to a large tree in January 1977. Both victims had been bound together with baling wire, and impressions on a tree branch indicate the victims had been suspended as their murderer watched upon an orange crate.
Deep scratch marks were found near the base of the trunk, close to where sections of a torso had been bound.
Both victims had been suspended from this tree long enough to leave welt impressions within the bark prior to their deaths. The initials "G.J." had also been carved into the trunk, the roots of which bore several deep knife marks containing torn sections of clothing fiber.
The tree is said to be indestructible. Its been set on fire several times while saws break trying to cut it down.
This is known to locals as The Devil’s Tree.

They cemented the hole to stop animals borrowing and killing the tree. Also, all the marks on the tree are scars. Usually made by pests (human or otherwise)

On bonfire night kids do not wear masks asking for penny for the guy, they make a guy, similar to a scarecrow to burn on the bonfire and take that asking for a penny. But I haven’t seen any of this since I was a child in the 90’s as most of the bonfires now are controlled events rather than happening at the end of ur street

There.is no evidence that the braden bull has ever existed or for that matter has ever been used.
Love this museum 🖤 I hadn't been down to St Augustine in a while & this apparently came during that time frame. Someone suggested going when I finally got back there & I was blown away. The museum was so much more than I imagined it to be. The ambiance itself is as great as the items themselves. I highly recommend checking it out.

My heart aches for those that were executed. I am sure that they were not witches. Their souls meant more to them than their physical bodies. That’s the only consolation I feel, but still. So tragic.

Was it worth stopping for?
Absolutely. Lots of history, shopping and old Saloons. We enjoyed the mine tour, gun fight show and Birdcage Museum. Just get there early, the whole town shuts down by 5pm.
