I was born in Germany to a German mother and a GI father. Spoke German before I spoke English. Now I work between Austin and Houston, not too far from Shelby. I interact with a lot of old Germans. These folks speak German better than most I’ve encountered.

Dass die Amerikaner ziemlich klares Hochdeutsch reden ist vermutlich ähnlich wie beim Australischen Englisch. Im 19 Jahrhundert waren viele Linguisten der Meinung, dass die Australier das klarste Englisch sprechen mit sehr wenig Dialekt. Das kam daher, dass die weißen Australier aus vielen verschiedenen Regionen aus Groß Brittanien stammten, und wenn man in der Öffentlichkeit mit dem Dialekt der Eltern gesprochen hat wurde man häufig schlecht verstanden. Also haben sie es sich sehr schnell angewöhnt sehr klar und deutlich zu sprechen und Dialekt-Aussprachen oder -Begriffe zu vermeiden. Ich denke, dass Deutsche Siedler in Amerika eine ähnliche Situation hatten, und man in der Öffentlichkeit viel klares Hochdeutsch gesprochen hat, damit man richtig verstanden wird. Auch dann noch, wenn man zuhause in der Familie vielleicht noch mit Dialekt gesprochen hat. Das wird dann aber über die Generationen ziemlich schnell verschwunden sein, besonders wenn die Eltern beide unterschiedliche Dialekte hatten.

ich finde es immer wieder eigenartig, wie die menschen sich optisch an ihre neue heimat anpassen. die leute im video sind z.b. ursprünglich deutsche, haben aber irgendwie diesen amerikanischen touch in ihrem aussehen. damit meine ich nicht ihre kleidung. ich weiß nicht ob es an der ernährung und dem wetter liegt, aber irgendwie scheint sich der körper ziemlcih schnell anzupassen.

My dad’s side of the family settled in Medina, Gillespie, and Kerr counties and maintained the language up until my grandma’a generation. My grandma and her 4 siblings all learned German as their first language. My grandpa grew up in San Antonio, however, so he never learned much more than the table prayer and some phrases. My mom’s side of the family settled in Austin and Washington counties, and did not maintain their native language past WWI. During that time, my great grandparents and great great grandparents were threatened by the Klan to start speaking English or else their homes, churches, and businesses would be burned to the ground. Another phenomenon I would add is the fact that Texas Germans tend to marry other Texas Germans. My entire family has been here for over 150 years, yet I am genetically 98% German. In fact, the other 2% is the result of marriages that happened while my ancestors were still in Germany 😅

What's interesting is that the Texas Germans also look very typically German. Many other groups like the amish have mixed heavily but these folk have been keeping a lot more to themselves it seems.

That was really cool! I love and support minority languages that are spoken in North America. The young German guy was really nice and respectful. It's too bad that the people of the older generation didn't teach their kids to speak German. Almost all can be lost in one generation.

Interesting fact, many of these German Texans came from a radical political background, and were adamant abolitionists. During the civil war, they remained loyal Unionists, and some were targeted for mob violence. Later on, during WWI, there was a concerted effort, both at the government and cultural levels, to suppress the German language as a source of supposed disloyalty. My grandfather, who lived in Indiana, went to a German-language school until it was shut down during the war. In fact, much of the decline of German in the us can probably be traced back to wartime hysteria. As far as I'm aware, there was no similar effort to suppress German language or culture during WWII. The common attitude at this time as that this was a war against nazism in ideology and practice, not the German people, and especially not German-Americans, a huge population of unquestionable loyalty. That said, if you were affiliated with the Bund or similar organizations, which only a microscopic minority were, it's likely you'd receive a richly-deserved denaturalization and have your ass booted out of the country.

Komisch; wenn Menschen in Deutschland türkisch, griechisch oder gar arabisch sprechen, freut "man" sich nicht so sehr, dass sich die Sprache der "Heimat" so toll gehalten hat.
