AVD On Azure Local - 21 AVD Multi-Cluster Resiliency
In This Episode:
................
We split our AVD session hosts across 2 clusters for more resiliency. So that we potentially can loose one cluster while still serving AVD users. How is the deployment done and what to do with the users profiles. This scenario has been asked for many times...see it in action and have fun.
Agenda

00:04:59 User haptics we want to have
00:06:14 How we set up the scenario
00:13:11 ...in the meantime...our AVD session host naming convention

    Why are there 2 Primordial Storage Pools after you have created Storage Spaces Direct?

    • @thehybridfriends
      @thehybridfriends 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I will check with Bernhard and Carsten

    • @thehybridfriends
      @thehybridfriends 18 วันที่ผ่านมา

      IMHO this is an aggregate for each node's local storage whicht is not yet assigned to any (clustered) storage pool

    • @tonyhall699
      @tonyhall699 18 วันที่ผ่านมา

      At 2:50 Carsten says the one Primordial pool is for the "local host" and one is "cluster wide". At 3:15 Bernhard says that any disk that is not assigned to a pool is in a Primordial pool. At this point both Primordial pools shown are 9.17TB, suggesting each disk is 9.17\6 = 1.5TB. By 8:10 there are 24 disks, suggesting there is 36.8TB available storage. At 9:15 the two Primordial pools are each 35.37TB. Meanwhile the the cluster pool "2SD on ToKCluster" is 34.91TB + 97.5GB ~ 35TB. Hence my confusion, surely you create useable storage from the Primordial storage, so the Primordial storage should be 0 and why is it showing two copies of Primordial storage?

    • @thehybridfriends
      @thehybridfriends 17 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi @tonyhall699 I feel your pain. Here is an attempt to explain it...and I am not saying that this makes sense nor is obvious nor needs to be correct. "...At 2:50 Carsten says the one Primordial pool is for the "local host" and one is "cluster wide"..." -> this is 2 primordial pools with the same value. Although it is cluster wide I assume it can only show what is local i.e. 9.17TB after clustering we see all 24 disks. But again 2 primordial pools one local one for the cluster but now with all 24 disks visible. i.e. 2x primordial with approx. 36TB. The S2D on ToKrCluster with 34.91TB.

    Hi Thank you for this great tutorial but applying it in my case raised some issues and ping ibm.com doesn’t respond back. Actually the issue is with 3_postinstallscript and I don’t know that should be added in IP addresses place. Currently I have added dummy values. Can you please specify which values I should add. My host is also a VM

    Sorry mate, for the industry that I am currently employed systems operate all from On-premise... Server - Client solution communication with SCADA PLC systems running on Modbus protocol. Microsoft Consultant is wrong... On-premise will never disappear!!

      Hi, I'm totally with you but especially monitoring or security baseline management will be managed from cloud in the most cases. Hardware and machine integration will still run on prem. I would say Hybrid is here to stay :) Cheers, Flo

    Been a Hyper-V Engineer since its inception in Windows Server 2008. I am over the moon knowing Hyper-V is back and better in Windows Server 2025. Not a Fan of AsHCI 23h2 Build, Azure HCI deployment takes far too long, 4 node 23h2 Cluster took over 4hrs for the deployment to complete. Where tradition Hyper-V Cluster only takes 15mins to create via FCM or PowerShell. In an emergency Recovery exercise 23h2 rebuild and recreation is not ideal. Appreciate this podcast and keep up the good work mate... Fan from NZ!! AD-Less Cluster,,,, best thing ever for Hyper-V Clusters...finally feeling like esx-i

      Hi, no the deployment process for windows server 2025 is different. Its not clear how it will look like in the final release but it will be similar to windows server 2022 learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/storage/storage-spaces/deploy-storage-spaces-direct

      There is no integration into the azure portal yet. Everything runs local on the network controller

    Thanks for the videos. At the network part, you disable jumbo frames for the management & the compute network, but not the storage network. Is that correct? will that work in this virtualized environment?

      Yes that's the case and it will also work within a virtual environment. Cheers, Flo

    what if connection to Azure platform is down? Is the solution, the VMs and all the workloads able to work autonomously? Can you use Windows Admin to manage this kind of situation?

      Hi, azure stack hci only needs to connect to azure every 30 days. In the meantime you can use wac, fail over cluster manager or hyper-v manager to manage the VMs

    So first thanks for this video! I am currently trying to follow it and was able to deploy the DC and the two HCI VMs. But for the DC I had to create the Golden Image from a standard Windows Server 2022 ISO as the Image Index 4 is not available for the Azure Stack HCI image. Checked with "dism /Get-WimInfo /WimFile:M:\sources\install.esd" and only got one result: Index : 1 Name : Azure Stack HCI Description : This option installs Azure Stack HCI. Size : 9,526,906,146 bytes After creation I was able to connect to the DC VM and had to "do it later" at the license key screen. After that I was able to login and figured out that the IP settings in 3_PostInstallScript.psd1 have not been used. The DC VM got a DHCP address from that network (was available via network tho). When I tried to change the IP Windows mentioned an error that has to be fixed with reboot. After that the two network adapters had default names and just DHCP. So some questions about that: 1) Could it be that the Azure Stack HCI ISO has changed since you made that video? Filename is 25398.469.231004-1141.zn_release_svc_refresh_SERVERAZURESTACKHCICOR_OEMRET_x64FRE_en-us.iso 2) Should your script also work with default Windows images? If so what could be the reason that the network settings haven't been used? 3) Why do I need the DC VM in the first place? Would be very happy about a reply, Best regards, Marc

      Hi Marc, To your questions: 1) The image has not changed for quite a while now - so it should work. This .iso however is only for HCI so it e.g. does not contain a regular Win Server image. 2) Yes. The mechanisms are quite old i.e. using unattend.xml file inside a generalized windows image. I tried Win client and server OS. 3) pls have a look at the additional descriptions made at: github.com/bfrankMS/CreateHypervVms/tree/master/Scenario-AzStackHCI The pictures there should help to better understand the setup and the purpose of the e.g. DC. Basically its providing 4 important things: A gui to manage HCI, AD Domain services, DNS resolution and routing of the internal HCI hosts to the internet via your gateway. The when you see the product key screen then not all steps could be performed automatically - i.e. no surprise that additional steps are failing (e.g. nic renaming + IPs not set,...) -> when you select the windows server iso to create the VHDX from (and yes you need to take a separate windows server iso - as it is not in the HCI iso) -> you can either take an eval copy (requires no windows key) - which I did (www.microsoft.com/de-de/evalcenter) or take a regular win srv .iso file and provide a product key...the blueprint sample describes how to do it: github.com/bfrankMS/CreateHypervVms/blob/master/Scenario-Blueprint/2_UnattendSettings.psd1 hth, B

    I need to design a DMZ network using Azure Stack HCI hardware. The host must access the production network to join the company's Active Directory infrastructure. The VMs in the DMZ subnet should have internet access. Is there a best practice document available that supports this design that separates the Internet facing DMZ network to the production/Internal-bound network?
