Why do Japanese train drivers point at everything?
Why do Japanese train drivers point at everything?
Japanese train drivers must point at all important signs and warnings. This way they show that they have noticed it and are aware of it. Train safety in Japan is the best in the world, you can see here why. It can look a bit funny when seen for the first time.

In Indonesia, pointing and calling has been implemented since the railway company’s reform in 2015 to improve safety. Not only for the railway, but also for the light rail and metro system. Our latest “Whoosh” high-speed rail also used this method albeit using the Chinese variant of pointing and calling (it’s more complex tho).

There are cameras in the cabs watching them all the time. If they do not go through this ritual, they are chastised. It is a rather drastic method of reinforcing rules in a totalitarian environment. It looks silly, but when the employer does not trut the integrity of the employee, this is their manner of enforcement.

I like the fact that with Japanese Railroading, "If I (The Driver) Sees It, And Points It Out...Then, (Conductor) We've BOTH Seen It, And Pointed It Out!" That way, in mishaps, one version will ALWAYS be backed up by a second version of the SAME event! Professional to the highest degree...and they RESPECT one another too.

In Australia back in the 70’s drivers had a great idea to help driver fatigue. It was called "take your kid to work on weekends ". And when I say work, I mean, teach your 9 yr old how to drive the train, then sit on the single seat on the other side of the cab reading the newspaper. Absolutely true. No way in hell you’d be able to pull that off these days. 😊

I used to live in Sydney, Australia, & whenever I caught the light rail (tram), the driver always pointed to all the signs. I guess it's the same on JR (Japanese Rail)

By pointing at something, you focus your attention. You can use this trick in situations where you do something so often that it becomes automatic, so you are then unsure whether you actually did it or not. For example, did I lock the door? Did I turn the alarm on? Did I turn the lights off? Just point at the lock, or the switch, etc., immediately after you did it, and this will switch your mind from the automatic mode to a focused awareness mode. In addition to pointing, saying aloud what you just did makes it even safer.
