Kawasaki ER-5 Troubleshooting Carburetor Issues
When driving home from a friend early morning the bike began to spudder and act weird while at cruising speed. My first thought was the carburetors and right away I started to troubleshoot for issues. After taking the bike apart and put it together a couple of times, I just ordered new parts from China. I think im in need of new equipment - specially a ultrasonic cleaner. This video took me a w...

Do you know the diameter of membrane?
Hejsa.
how manny turns you have on air mixture screw?
1 turn and 1/4 of a turn
Great job! Very helpful !

Hello, great tutorial. Can you explain the difference between the "FV+BH, 12 V/6 W" and the "ST., 12 V/6 W"?
Sorry for the late respons. I'm not quite sure, but my guess will be the cap at the end of the light. Because the volt and wattage are the same on both of them.
I found if i attach carbs to the airbox first, and then slide them both in it fits much easier and quicker. Just my findings. I also attach cables before i do all that. I found that works well for me..
I'll remember that next time I have to disassemble it, thanks.
That a huge part of great job!

Great job bud! Amazing video, thanks to you I can do the job now. Much appreciated

Thank you very nice and helpful video
I've two er5s and both were a nightmare with leaking carbs and fuel taps. Both sold on at a ££ loss as "projects". Grr gutted. Otherwise really good economical bikes.
i solved fuel tap problems and fuel in engine oil for 4 euro. simple manual fuel valve instead of factory one.yes you can buy repair kit for factory fuel tap,but this is cheap and forever. open it,drive, close it and no fuel leaking in engine oil. or,if you need sophisticated system, just use electrovalve from car lpg system. its open when you turn the key,and closed when you stop the engine.
I have an ER-5 from 04 and I have removed that carb probably 7 times in the last three months. Drives me insane.
Hi! Where did you buy your diaphram? The ones that came with my carb rebuild kit are too small and the seller is not willing to refund me lmao Any tip would be helpful
That seems weird, that they are too small? - I think i bought from here: www.ebay.com/itm/285172968194?hash=item4265a22b02:g:rQQAAOSwVexkBmas&amdata=enc%3AAQAHAAAA4F1bOQlL5HLCOU4o7QpdC9oZvgD%2FDTTOsGtzvBO%2FjEvJcsgFC4Mct4o519zVUKTVJtnhtxAtHL17geNhxVzrlbPSi%2Ff2F5Sw4Sf%2Bl4P9ykFuk%2BlSOeO4cb5tyU8HrFv4pzgedYrJjsOguIeRab4%2BmBe3Y0IZ9k5XbI%2BaywydjjM3LN2hrHAxuvf0J2nbn1h4jy0iOOPCZcRBmlWTZi%2BCz9OnVPDxepro22Bo1%2BYhFO2JfJVXu0HM4tkLG93F2Cmh9w%2Fw%2FC1yFKrHNgnp2mB1h%2B9k%2BofAAZZ66iMfLVh2CtbG%7Ctkp%3ABFBM0ozIn-xh
I found 2 issues: 1. Left carburetor filling valve was overfloating, which caused mix a way to rich. Cleaning it helped nothing, and I had to bent valve support rod a little bit to close earlier. 2. My version has Secondary Air System. Here a valve membrane was ruptured, causing right carburetor sucking false air. Must have! : fuel filter, otherwise some day petcock plus carburetor together will perform a fuel dump at the midnight 😑
Thanks a lot for you videos. I bought recently an old Kawasaki ER5 that needs some love and, after watching your videos, I'm planning to do it myself instead of spenting a small fortune in professional workshops. Funny thing is, the first thing I though when I bought it was to paint these parts (radiator cover and foot pegs support) in matt black, same as you
amazing, thanks so much
hello dear Master, i washed my kle500 with jet and then my bike's engine doest'n work. i think water went to somewhere. if i pushed the bike from top of the road, bike works very hard. where should i check? handstarter is working but engine doesn't runing. if the engine run somehow does not stop. what can ı do?
I think you got water inside your airfilter and housing also your carbs. You probably needs to empty the carbs and try turning it over with fresh fuel. If your engine runs and you dont know how to stop it again you can try killing the engine by remove the sparkplugwires if they are accessible. If not try sufficate the engine by fill the exhaust with an old towel, so there won't come any exhaustgases out.
@@MLWAM The last situation is as follows. My engine sometimes doesn't start, when I check from sparkplugs, there is no ignition. Is there a connection to the ignition in the ignition switch? The starter works but the ignition sometimes does not work.
@@erman0006 There could potentially be something wrong with the ignitionswitch yes. I have not had mine off, so I don't know how hard is it to get to. But maybe try holding the key in the On position while cranking and wiggle the key a bit.
It fixes itself when I turn the key and turn it on and off. Have you ever looked at the electrical diagram? Is the ignition connection through the ignition switch (key)?
@@erman0006 No i haven't had a look at the diagram for the ignition switch og connection. Do you have the diagram? for the electrics?
Very helpful video I am having a problem with the same bike I've got. So bought the kit and doing the carbs just wandering the about the slow idle valves is it just the value and no o ring thanks 👍
Yes, if there weren't any from the kit, or the old ones you removed, then there shouldn't be any.
kender følelsen
Very clear very helpful got to do mine this week.
Cool 🤙💪 th-cam.com/video/_T5n03Umrc4/w-d-xo.html
please tell me which spark plug wrench you use here exactly - i would like that too because it's just too difficult and stupid with the normal one
Hello ! What's the size of the wrench you are using for the spark plug ?
This is a long shot, but you wouldn't happen to know the inside diameter of the fuel line coming off the tap on the ER-5 would you?
No, i'm sorry, what are you looking for?
@@MLWAM i was hoping to fit a simple on/off petcock tap after the stock vacuum tap as i have heard that the factory one can fail and flood.... Trouble is there are quite a few different sizes! I've been told today the hoses are 5mm inside diameter, so i reckon the 6mm tap will be fine ;)
Hi, I was wondering what year is your ER-5? I've been trying to find out how much fork oil I need to use in a 2002 model but I can't seem to find a definitive answer anywhere
Mine is a 1998, I dont think that they changed forks on the model. So you can use any manual on the model and find it there. It really depends if the forks are completely empty, or you service them.
@@MLWAM thank you, I have realised I was getting confused between the simple oil change only amount and the amount after rebuild.. silly me! Going to attempt a full fork service this week for the first time as one of my seals has begun to leak :)
@@classic_adventure good luck, have fun!! Hope yours can be taken apart easier than mine 😅
@@MLWAM I hope so, but I have to say you did a great job of overcoming the challenges!
thank you for your Er-5 videos; they are very well made and give me confidence to attempt a few things myself!
Top video
Back when I was doing my bike test we were taught hand signals as there were no indicators on bikes then, that is in the UK. Don't know where you are Holland maybe so don't know if they teach them there? Always a handy thing to know as you have found out indicators can fail. Looked a cold miserable day to have your first ride on the Kwaker much nicer on a warm sunny day! Just wish we could get some !!!
Thanks for the comment!! Yea here in Denmark we are not taught hand signals. But the indicators did work, the only thing I was missing was the resistor to make them flash slower. Yeah the weather was okay, just a tad wet.
dude, how do you let the air bubbles come out like that? isnt engine running necessary for it? if it is, how do you do it when the fuel tank is off? thanks
Yeah sure the engine needs to warm up and the thermostat has to open to cycle the system. I think I show it in my carb video how i make an external fuel tank 😁
I've been following your project, since I have the same bike. Also done spark plugs, carb cleaning, oil change and oil filter change. Coming up is a change on the temperature sensor and coolant replacement. Thank you so much for sharing your videos!
Do you have the link for the manifold flanges? Got the same issue

For the front shock absorbers you used 2K paint. 2K as a brand???
No, I used 2 component spray paint. I cant remenber the brand 🙂
How to set the chain tension? What is the distance from rear swing arm? Thank you. Thank you for your good job, helped me with a lot of jobs on my er5.
Sorry for late respons, chain tension should be between 35 - 40 milimeters or 1.4 - 1.6 inches. It really isnt about how far to rear swingarm, it's the travel distance from the center of the chain while you put tension on it.
Nice, I love your Er 5. I will also paint the radiator cover and the foot rest holder black on my Er 5. Are you happy with the Michelin Pilot Street? I probably will buy the Bridgestone BT46
Absolutely a lovely set of tires! Havent had any problems with them yet. Way Better then the ones who were on from 2008 😅
So I was out riding yesterday when I entered a roundabout the backtire began to slip, but I don't think it has something to do with the brand since it was cold outside (43°F/2°C), and it was within 2 minutes of riding (cold tires).
@@MLWAM Yeah, I think that is normal at 2°C with cold tyres and a little sharper turn. I bought the Bridgestone BT46 and I am also very happy till now.
Good vid - I just serviced one of those (A nice one with 12,000 miles and full service history with Valve clearances (0.20mm exhaust & 0.15mm inlet , new fuel diaphragm, oil, coolant, plugs, carb strip, clean, sinc and balance - The coolant tubes were a bit tough to get right as I had to twist them back straight and clean the cylinder head holes in order for the O rings to work properly, (Due to slight damage caused taking them off), and I had to pack out the inlet boot fasteners with a few wraps of neatly folded kitchen foil into strips in order to get a good tight squeeze on the inlet boots via the fasteners - Then, a few turns with the pilot jets and off she goes.
Hej.
Hej Kasper De er købt over ebay i UK.
Super content! Tip of the day (at 42:00): the fuel tap has 3 positions: ON - PRI - RES. If you want to fill the carbs, just turn it to PRI. In this position the fuel can pass the fuel tap without vacuum (it becomes a "normal" tap). Furthermore you can use it to drain the fuel tank or the carbs too, without major action. (If you knew that, just wantetd to test the vacuum connection, ignore this - but anyway, it may be some help for anybody reading it.)
You are absolutely right! Why havent I thought of that duh.. great tip! Ill remember that the next time I need to empty the tank.
What would happen if I remove the PAIR system and plug all the vacuum lines on the carbs and petcock? Have you done that? Thank you!
Good work!
Been working on carb for kaw vulcan past few days, and found video very insightful 👍. I can tell you with confidence the scratches on your throat edges on both sides are from someone removing carbs and pushing a screwdriver through the boots to wedge out as its a tight fit. Thanks again. Would have loved to see the inside diameter of your replacement pilot jet.
Hi, at 4:39, what is the model no. Of the Delo air filter? Its so hard to buy a filter to my ER500, thanks!
Hey TonyChanHK, The partsnumber for the filter is: DELO11013-1261
