Pavarotti Masterclass (1978) - 'E lucevan le stelle': Delivering the aria with maximum effect
As part of Luciano Pavarotti's 1979 Masterclass at the Juilliard School of Music in New York City, Korean tenor, Kwang Chung, performs 'E lucevan le stelle' from Puccini's 'Tosca'.
With inset video clips from the Masterclass, I have punctuated Pavarotti's feedback and suggestions for this aria with his breathtaking rendition from his performance in the Metropolitan Opera's 1978 production of Tosca.
Pavarotti's simple suggestion and explanation of personifying Mario's conflicting and swift-changing state of mind combined with how to create the necessary vocal effects to convey the clue of this aria are absolutely fascinating!

The first in a series of six half-hour master classes given in January, 1979, at the Juilliard School in New York City. After a short introductory statement, tenor Luciano Pavarotti gives brief instruction to three Juilliard singers. Kwang Chung (tenor) sings "E lucevan le stelle" from Giacomo Puccini's opera "Tosca"
