Actually I didnt appreciate this. She was a formidable mezzo but not in the quick colorstura segments.
Assolutamente fenomenale considerato l'anno dell'esecuzione e che la Rossini renaissance era ancora da venire. Le agilità della Berganza o della Valentini Terrani chiaramente sono un'altra cosa ma l'esecuzione è davvero splendida per merito del buon gusto, dell'eleganza, dello stile della Simionato in anticipo di almeno 15 anni rispetto ai suoi tempi.

You ought to listen to simionato, von stade, bartoli in the same role: Signora Callas seems to be unsurpassed; may be Signora Simionato got the richer dark voice matching the original idea of rossini, but Callas is incredible in her agilta - haven't heard anyone better yet, even though her voice wobbles in the final high note.
Interesting comment: whatever one might say about Callas, no one understood bel canto more than she. This is not just about technique, but also about grasp and understanding of the music. As I've said on a number of occasions, Callas was first and foremost a musician.

No one felt bel canto better than Callas, but unfortunately her technique had collapsed by the time she got around to performing and recording this aria.

Immense chanteuse au vaste répertoire et à la voix ample et généreuse; mais le retour des mezzos coloratures super virtuoses était encore en germe et ce n'est pas lui faire injure de remarquer qu'elle simplifie la partition. Par exemple, au début de la cabalette, elle ne chante pas exactement ce qu'a prévu Rossini (elle aplatit littéralement l'ornementation) et dans les deux grandes montées finales, elle remplace les doubles-croches par des...noires. Autrement dit, elle chante une note sur quatre. En revanche, l'aigu est éclatant mais on sait qu'elle donnait des contre-ut à faire verdir d'envie bien des sopranos, alors ce n'est pas des "si" qui font la faire trembler.

she was good but not in this recording though! this doesnt honor the art that she was famous for! what year is this?
she was one of the greatest Verdi mezzos ever...but in Rossini, and especially in this Cenerentola...I don't think the role suits her at all: doesn't sound tender or youthfull, and the coloratura is not up to the task. Berganza was much much better
Comparisons are odious, as dear John Lydgate reminded us. It is rebarbative to hold up one great artiste as 'better' than another. On Parnassus, no one Muse is better than another. Each singer has her own special and particular qualities which she has graciously chosen to share with us. Our critical faculties would be better exercised in enumerating and singling out for praise these various qualities, rather than trying to rank singers against each other.

Her low notes are so warm and wonderful!
David Allen -this role was actually written for a contralto so her low notes are exactly what is required for this aria -she is in effect a mezzo contralto -and a truly great singer .

Di cenerentole ce ne sono tante...di Simionato ce n'era una sola. Impagabile Angelina, Rosina, Isabella, Arsace...siccome sono un patito di Rossini la amo soprattutto in questi ruoli

Whenever I think of how a mezzo - or a great singer for that matter - should sound, I think of Signora Simionato! Such an amazing singer! Truly an inspiration to any musician who aspire to gain master technique, flawless emission and clear phrasing! Meravigliosa! Voce unica e bella! <3

Devi scusarli....sono solo due cretini. Ce ne fossero ancora oggi delle voci così!!!! Oddio...qualcuna c'è, ma non reggono al confronto. La Simionato aveva voce, anima, gusto, stile...tutti pregi che sembrano passati di moda.

Sublime... oggi ho ascoltato registrazioni di altre mezzo giovani e rampanti... da scorarsi!!!
A quei tempi non si studiava Rossini ma Cilea, Ponchielli,Giordano, Mascagni. Il Rossini della Cenerentola era appannaggio di pochissime, della Supervia sopratutto e che era brava...che poi morì di parto e lascio' il posto di Angelina vuoto. Giulietta fu la succedanea nel tempo e ne fece il suo cavallo di battaglia assieme a Mignon ( ma questo lo sappiamo). Fosse nata venti anni piu' tardi avremmo avuto un mezzosoprano simile a quello che ci hanno abituato la Horne e alla Verrett. Ma gia' così e' un miracolo ed un piacere ascoltarla in questa parte. Il timbro ideale di Angelina. Cordiali saluti.
