TLDS: the film was longer than outlined because of extensive visuals. Be original and independent, whenever possible. That's it.

The one minute = one page rule doesn't apply when there is so little dialog. The first 25 minutes and the last 20 minutes have almost no dialogue.

The problems you present with screenplays only really are a thing because of studios. It's a business thing. They want something concrete to invest on, they want something that'll give them the idea of what the finished product would be, and they want something that will sell (an accessible, structured story that's audience-friendly). It's all antithetical to the concept of making art. That's why once you explore filmmakers outside the studio system and filmmakers who treat film as communication and as expression (like the French New Wave directors, Kubrick, Noe, Tarr, Malick, Sciamma, Anno, Carax, late-stage Akira Kurosawa, etc), you see the attitude towards screenplays become a lot more fluid. And this stems from the idea that film is not just a storytelling medium, it's an audio-visual medium. You don't necessarily need a story to communicate ideas using film. Images and sound alone can communicate feelings and ideas through textures and colours and whatnot. As Kubrick once put it: "A film is--or should be--more like music than like fiction. It should be a progression of moods and feelings. The theme, what's behind the emotion, the meaning, all that comes later. The feel of the experience is the important thing, not the ability to verbalize or analyze it." A screenplay is too concrete for the type of art that the likes of Kubrick or Godard or Lynch are chasing.

It's not the screenplay that is the problem, but rather the viewer.

Anyone who is familiar with Kubrick knows that his films are always evolving, even while they are being made. Although he has a reputation as being a perfectionist and controlling, many of those actors who have worked with him will tell you that he was very open to a new idea. He wanted his crew , both actors and technicians alike, to be just as absorbed with the film as he was and he was never kind to anyone who showed any less enthusiasm. I've read many books on Kubrick and how he had last minute moments of inspiration that he sprung on his production team. One case being Slim Pickens riding the bomb at the end of Dr. Strangelove. The plane set had no bomb bay doors and had to be created to suit the director's vision. It's now the most iconic image of the film. I imagine the script for 2001 is probably very threadbare, especially on dialogue since it's essentially a silent film, it's story told through images and very light on expository information. I've never been frustrated by this lack of simple answers and I think it is what keeps the film fresh 56 years after its release. If you need a more focused narrative I'd suggest reading the novel, which ends with the Star Child detonating the satellites and their nuclear weapons. I prefer the ambiguity of the film as the Star Child just hovers over the Earth. No matter how many times I've watched the film that moment when it turns into the camera still gives me chills, especially when I got to see it on an Imax format. Stunning.

I fully agree with what you’re saying. I have read the novel, and I find it very interesting, however Kubrick’s version is better in my opinion for the ambiguity and pure visual storytelling on show. With the video, I wanted to explain the typical rules of what a screenplay is, and show how Kubrick went against those rules, and went on to make one of if not the best film of all time.

Well, a LOT of what Arthur C. Clarke wrote in his original novel, 2001: A Space Odyssey - expanded from many of his short stories, including The Sentinel and Encounter in the Dawn - was removed from Stanley Kubrick's film, making it seem even more mysterious and ambiguous. Clarke's descriptions of the Monolith's capabilities, from its creation of the Star Gate by opening a fourth dimension within itself, to the the original Monolith actually performing cognitive problem-solving experiments on early humanoid primates, including the Monolith being nearly transparent and projecting images on its surface, might have been too technically complicated for the special effects of the time. The explanation of HAL-9000 going into a cognitive mobius-loop due to having been given conflicting orders - One, accurate processing of information without distortion or concealment; and Two, maintaining the secrecy of the mission objectives from Bowman and Poole - which caused him to malfunction due to being unable to resolve the conflict, might have been attempted by another filmmaker, but Kubrick chose to not do so. I find that odd, since in Dr. Strangelove, Kubrick had no problems whatsoever having General "Buck" Turdigson go into a rather lengthy explanation regarding the details of "Wing Attack Plan R", and why it was nearly impossible to order a recall.

Yeah, Kubrick’s choices are interesting and I think it’s an interesting thought to think what another filmmaker would’ve done, but also it’s important to look at why Kubrick may have done what he did. However, for me, Kubrick’s choices elevate the film more than any other direction could have, especially in 1968.
