Weathering HO Model Train Track - Easy and Realistic - Easiest and Very Effective Method
Why settle for black plastic railroad ties and sleepers when you can easily make them look like old wooden tracks for sidings and branchlines.

Thanks for a very informative video.
Sorry if I brought this up in another video, but, no pun intended, I think you're spinning your wheels here.. Your prowess is highly admirable, but it just seems like SO much work just to get rolling stock to be 'in scale' with the track scale below it !! Even if you are successful with 1, 2,5 coaches, are you going to do ALL that work if you own 42 coaches, wagons, whatever ? I appreciate how we can become determined to do something exciting or different, or just to prove a point..But, it's a hobby, something which really should have little to no frustrating or labored work involved..If anything, I'd like to see you instead, hand lay 1: 75 scale standard gauge track and try for widening out the wheels on everything so that all is to 1: 75 scale..(though I've no idea if that IS possible).. Or, if it's that you want HO 1: 87 size all around, consider going US or Australia prototype RRing where it's all available.. But I respect that this is not what you've grown up seeing on the 1:1 scale in your country, so likely that's out of the question.. And here's yet another concern I'm not sure you've come to grips with: What about the coaches' width, side to side ? Will you then cut a lengthwise section out of each body shell so that they are both height and width-wise, correct for 1: 87 ?... No malice here.. I just wanted to say these things which I too realize may not be the aim of your outcome whatsoever, and do, from across the pond wish you the best in your creativity, along with apologies for any misconceptions I may have over it.
I agree with all this, but this is fun for me and I really enjoy the challenge.
OK ! 10-4.. I do think someone, SOMEONE should manufacture true British 1: 87 scale already already, and cause a sea change that way. I do know the story, the early motors not fitting in the early 1:1 scale type, model steam, thus giving birth to OO.. But, gosh, we have motors now small enough to fit into N and Z scale steam; 'can' and coreless motors.. I'm sure an N scale motor would suffice in a diminutive early Brit steam, strong enough to pull a dozen or so 'wagons', in HO scale..leave alone a huge British steamer of later years..And in DCC double heading would be a cinch if needed.. On top of this they could all have Kadee couplers, though not Euro prototype, but way smaller than what you have now (I think)..And I've seen British MRwy videos where they're all Kadee knuckle couplers..And it's not like it'd be the first time a size or scale has petered out in the history of toy and model trains... or, OR, somehow get all the track and axles to 1: 75 scale..But this is likely very old ideas to you guys over there... Anyroad (as Ringo says), Dat's it..Just siphoning off my own steam, or,.... 'self-e-steam'... 😇
Hey hate to bug you but...do you have any trouble with running locos round or about 8 inches in length through R1 C track. Thanks. G.
Very nice video !!! A question. How running a DC 2rail analog loco in AC 3rail marklin tracks?
Can be done but major. Magnets for motor, wheel isolation etc
I have also a bb9201 but it is not running. I want too restore it. Can you let me see the inside off the train or help me with something? Greetings from holland
Piko make a Chechoslovakian T669/ Rh770 locomotive with a red chassis sides which are compatible which this Chme3 bodyshell you have there. Would save the headache of trying to make a chassis, and you could change the shell back and forth as you wish.
Nice ....does this theory work for continued continuity on the switches. Good video.
Does not work Märklin switches and points but the C track can imtergrant fine with code 100 DC stack using standard rail joiners.
Received some C track yesterday and tried your procedure worked just fine. Nice. Thanks for the tip.
Saved the pocket !
Very nice. Can you use the same techniques when the track is already in place on the layout?
Sure. The control of the markers makes this very easy.
I have a Dell monitor from 2008 whose latch for the monitor stand crumbled from zinc pest. The resulting swelling and cracks were extremely unpleasant to look at.
Outstanding track weathering technique, took notes! Not sure how I haven't heard of this channel until YT recommended this video this eve. Subbed.
Welcome aboard!
I have a bunch of old lima stuff because of my grandfather, he loved them because they were cheap and good. He used to swap lima motors in to rivarossi models because the motors were way better. There are 3 lima models i own that i call “immortals” because they are stupid reliable and they were never really kept up the maintenance, old fleishman are better in most ways, but if you don’t pay attention the will nuke themselves. After 10 years i miss my model railway (i still have my grandfather’s and will stay with me forever) and now I’m planning to make a new N scale one because i always wanted to try N or Z, but always had HO
Very cool weathering effects. When I pause the video, the AK marker colours are hard to read. Could you post the colours you're using? TIA.
RAL 8017 Red Brown for the side of the rail and chairs RAL 2004 Oramge for the rust on the chairs RC M0009 Deck Tan RC M007 Brown (main sleeper/tie colour) RC M012 Wood Base RC M025 Dark Grey
Good system! 👍👍👍🙋♂️
Like the baby wipe trick. Nice👍🚂🖌
Blends them all visually
hello, as I know this set is standard DC set, how you run it on the Marklin AC rails?
It's a major job involving installing a rectifyer and relay. There are kits available in Germany. I've never done it myself.
Oh cool way of painting! Great review!
Consider that a steal considering that Piko may have likely had their license with RZD due to the Ukraine war.
Interesting. We have a mid-size layout at the museum I volunteer at that has are large sections of unballasted EZ-Track. But it is already laid down, so that will present a challenge. Can you please list the markers you used; I had trouble reading them on your video.
AK Real Colours Red Brown Brown Deck Tan Raw Wood Light Grey
@ thank you
looking forward to new layout ,happy new year
Good work Thomas, I'm building up the scenery on my layout. So far I've built two retaining walls, a brick built bridge, and I'm on with a girder bridge.
That's a great improvement. Those AK pens are fantastic, I'll look them up at my local retailer. Happy New Year!
huge difference , looks awesome well worth the work
Very well done👍 I have some easytrack that i use for temp stuff. I am going to replace my #4 track of code 83 with it. 83 finicky. AK stuff it to cool for school.
The markers are so inexpensive and just so handy.
Stainless steel doesn't corrode super 4 is made from steel, not stainless steel
Totally hooked by your intro. Something that lots of layouts miss is that a model railway is like a moving painting - it is, in short *art*. Just like the impressionists were better for ditching reality, there are so many better expressions of a railway to be achieved by being stylistic, consistent, and playing to the scale. Very well done!
I just bought one of these little locos yesterday, along with a few Lima rolling stock, some trestles, an under bridge set model kit and heaps of Lima track including turnouts (the latter look nickel silver though whereas the rest look to be steel). I don't think it's had much use at all - everything including track looks pristine. This is all after I told my daughter I don't think we can possibly afford the hobby to even get started after weeks of looking at videos and reading about HO scale. It's going to be tricky trying to model something similar to the Grand Valley layout as they work in Atlas but we are going to give it a go. We just want a mountain scene layout of some description without all the technicalities of multiple switching options etc. It looks hardly used and is in excellent condition, so hopefully it will run just as nice. If not, we will try the magnet option. We are new to the hobby but I have a lot of woodworking experience - hopefully that will come in handy. Anyway thanks very much for this video preview of just how well they can run if they have been looked after.
Been wanting some of those ferry vans for a while, and picked up 3 different ones at the NEC. The Interfrigo I don't have!
Thank you for the traction tire tip
Works great, thanks a lot
Is it plastic or metal?
Metal mostly
Do u have a p36 steamer?
It's in Russian alphabet
Where did u get that?
Whst scale is that?
HO
Looks like an EMD SD-9
How do u run russian trains on ho gage track?
Same as Irish and British trains. Compromise
I like the look of them. Definitely worth having a go at. 👍
Good idea, I look forward to seeing your progress.. thanks for posting.
I think these Tunnels are nice to get started and there is scope to improve them. Go for it mate.
Go for it!
With some glue, paint and greenery, youll have a nice addition to the layout. 👍🏻
Jumped on your Live at the moment that it ended. I'm looking forward to seeing what ya do with the tunnel🚇
Lima clones but with interiors
The wheels are actually metal, but painted.
These are the Hachette Corbellini coaches, from a "build you own model railway" collection. They are full length HO 1/87 models, based on the Lima Expert moulding, but simplified. The Corbellini were a class of local train coaches built post WW2, that were either 2-axle or with bogies. The axles on these models need oling for smooth running.
Thank you again this has been so helpful. Delighted they are scale lenght too.
@ArcadiaJunctionHobbies the old 1960s Lima Corbellini are shorties, I'll post a video with my E424 hauled local train and tag you. I'll also make a dedicated video next time I'm running trains.
these same exact coaches were also used for the Salvat "construye tu maqueta ferroviaria" collection in Argentina and Mexico
As a modeller in the UK that's always looking for inspiration re' inexpensive yet creative solutions, this's brilliant 😌👌 . I'll definitely be attempting something similar for OO & O scales 🙂 .
The original 1956 model had a giant "Sausage" motor, that occupied most of the chassis and gave a useful flywheel effect. It also made the loco quite heavy, for its size. In the UK, they were imported and sold by Playcraft (Mettoy), which sold through the Woolworths store chain, during the 1960's. In the UK, these are still quite common and were the first electric loco that many now 60 to 70 year old railway modellers remember receiving, during the 1960's. Indeed, my first electric loco, given to me on Christmas 1971, was a second hand Playcraft (Jouef) British Railways liveried Playcraft (Jouef) "708", which I still have. It transformed my Triang-Hornby clockwork trainset's play value. I have around 6 "708" locos, with one still like new in its box. The earlier "Sausage" flywheel motor ones are the better runners and most reliable, being able to run on the dirtiest track, cleaning the rails as they go, because the dirt sticks to their wheels. One then removes the loco and cleans off the wheels. The "Sausage" motored version was replaced by the cheap & nasty noisy motor version, in the 1970's. Yours is the 1970's version. Both Mettoy (and therefore Playcraft) and Jouef are owned by Hornby Hobbies today.
Sometimes Donnerbuchsen coaches were turned into guterzug gepackwagen
Some of these were labled as Stuckgutwagen
Very Interesting information and wagon.
