    What about nonbinary identifying people who don't have physical intersex traits or other chromosomal abnormalities? I'm still trying to understand gender on a scientific basis.

    • @sung4ji3
      @sung4ji3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some more thoughts: If gay cis men like me have brains similar to straight women, what would make me not "be" a woman if I don't feel like one? Can an autistic/DID diagnosed person be trusted to identify as a different gender? I'm not trying to cause lgbtq+ infighting, and I don't want to imply anything ableist, as I am also autistic myself. Its just so hard to understand gender on scientific terms, and I am surrounded by queer people who I want to understand.

    • @youtility6685
      @youtility6685 ปีที่แล้ว

      Categories are social constructs. Someone who says that they are nonbinary is essentially stating that they don't identify with either masculine or feminine social categories of gender. It may or may not relate to their body; some NB folks may feel dysphoria or not with their body. But to my understanding, they are just staying that they don't fit into the binary social categories of man or woman. So they may like sports, to wear the color pink, play war games, and also play with dolls. Keep in mind, this is culturally specific. So if war games, wearing blue, etc is socially defined as feminine, that individual's concepts of being trans, nonbinary, or cis will differ. My perception is highly based off of American and European social constructs of gender.

    • @youtility6685
      @youtility6685 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sung4ji3 on your second set of questions: Gender does not equal sex. I think the modern LGBT+ movement is specifically trying to decouple the two. Therefore, you're usage of the term "woman" might be different if you are talking in terms of sex or gender. Dominant culture codifies gender specifically so that you assume another's sex to be a specific way. So it really depends on the usage. If you are saying that you feel more like a woman in terms of gender, then you are one. If you are saying you feel like a woman and you define woman to be "a person who has specific sex characteristics" than the truth would be depend on that reality. For you, which definition you choose is up to you, but if you are having to have this Convo with others, than it'd be best to verify that you are coming from the same perspective. I think it's fully fine to trust ASD/DID folks self identified gender so long as you make sure you are on the same page of what it means. I think members of the queer community don't like to be seen as sex objects so they are trying to distance themselves from their appearance strictly designating what kind of genitalia other people assume they have

    • @youtility6685
      @youtility6685 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lastly, while I am definitely on board with understanding this stuff on a scientific basis, I think it's a lot more fuzzy than you think. When you classify someone as a man or woman, sexually or in terms of gender, it is not black or white. These classifications are based off of things that are more of a spectrum. Yeah, you can say that there is only blue, red, or green, but there's also purple, which is the boundary where blue and red meet but that is neither of the two specifically. You also have green-blue, red-yellow, etc. It is much better to think of both gender and sex in this way. Someone may display XXY chromosomes, have a male appearance, but have a gender identity that aligns with what we designate as "woman." While sex is what we can objectify, gender appears to be more like a social game. There are ways that one can "play" man, woman, nonbinary, tomboyish, etc. To look at it in a scientific basis would be more akin to looking at a game of tag being played. The fact is that there are people playing tag, that one person is "it" and one or more people are not "it". Scientifically, you could study what does being "it" mean, what does the role entail and what are different ways the game could show up. Similarly, the fact is that transgender people exist. To say that they don't would be counterfactual. Scientifically, we could look at that and see what the boundaries are for that social role, what it means to be trans and so on. Where chromosomes and types of sexual dysmorphism is the purview of biology, social roles, including that of police officer, man, transperson, and 'it' would be the role of the social sciences. We would not ask what it means to biologically be a police officer lol. The only reason we ask what it means to be a man or woman is because we have historically tied the physical appearance and the social role with one another. I hope that helps clarify this a bit.
