I'm glad to learn an historical-marker has been placed on the site where Dr. King spoke on that long-ago day in a long-vanished era. A great carillon ought to be erected somewhere in the region surrounding Kingstree, a quiet, peaceful area, that instrumentally would hum softly with the hymns of that time, either continuously or at scheduled-hours, every day of the week. Such a structure would tower over the countryside, visible from afar, a tribute to Dr. King & all he accomplished, as well as to commemorate his followers & believers who worked "in the trenches" for social-change & justice. The carillon either could be placed on a prominent, natural or man-made elevation, or on a kind of island in a lake, again either natural or man-made.There would be places to sit, ponder, and meditate on those tumultuous-times, how ghastly they were in so many ways, and how Dr. King and the others who equally were indispensible. Parking, I suppose, would be available but the site never would be commercialized or politicized in any way, nor cluttered with an excess of historical-exhibits or information---in other words, not serving as a museum or containing an accompanying visitor-center, although I imagine certain essential public-facilities would be required. On the other hand, if the carillon was meant, as I envision it to be, as something only to be seen & heard from afar, parking & various other unavoidable facilities could be provided some considerable distance away. The overriding-concept of such a commanding, yet aesthetically-pleasing, structure as a carillon would be peace---in the heart, in the mind, and in society, as it's needed now, more than ever. I probably would name the site "The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Carillon", one dedicated to his principles & vision, the struggles & triumphs of those whom he inspired, and the nation whose conscience he awakened. Those times must never be forgotten. A carillon such as I foresee would help ensure this, both its uplifting-presence & audio-emanations a constant reminder, a place to reflect, to cherish a priceless legacy, to help meet new challenges, and to continue to march---to "march on the ballot-boxes" of our souls.

Wonderful event. I only just recently learned that Dr. King spoke here in 1966. I've watched & listened to his speech, amazed at the foresight to preserve it on film as he arrived & spoke. I'd like to learn all the details of his visit---the invitation, the logistics involved, the conversations & emotions of the people who, as evening descended, discussed & reflected on having seen & heard Dr. King that day, an event that probably changed their lives, and which lived-on as collectively-treasured memories.
