In heavy fog, dust-storms, or in similar weather causing greatly reduced visibility, switch on your vehicles rear fog light. Switch the rear fog light OFF, once you are in the clear. One should not use a rear fog light, simply because of a light mist. (As a guide, Germany, France etc, allow it's use when visibility reduces to 50m or less, or 100m or less in the UK). IF a pair of rear fog lights are to be fitted, they must be placed equally apart. (Some multifunction taillamps have a dedicated rear fog light compartment). Operating switch. Rear fog light switches that show the functions ISO symbol are available. A pilot light, typically an amber or yellow LED is used and is required, the LED serves to notify the driver that the rear fog light is 'on'. Earth the lamp. The remaining wire is run to the dashboard where the operating switch is located. Earth the switch. The circuits 'feed" is to be taken either from the vehicles front fog lights positive, if fitted, OR the parking light/sidelights. A rear fog light offers up to 20 times the luminous intensity over a vehicles standard taillights, this represents many seconds of additional warning of your vehicles presence, in heavy fog and like condition, to other traffic. It is suggested to carry a minimum two, high-visibility safety vests, kept stowed in a car's front door pockets, for easy access, for use by the roadside at breakdown and crash scenes - to aid in pedestrian safety. Global Specification EN471 Class 2 is suggested. A hazard warning triangle, min one per car, three for heavy vehicles, be stowed on board, for placement at breakdowns and crash scenes, and placed only if it is safe to do so. Think - placed at the side of a road, at the apex of a bend or curve, the crest of a hill, where hazard-warning lights cannot be seen or are obscured and you need traffic slowed down, made aware. Global Specification UNECE 27R is suggested.
