All of these ideas have me thinking about what tools I already have in my quiver so to speak versus reinventing the wheel. The suggestion of using the Jacob’s chuck got me thinking how else one might rings. How about using a Longworth chuck mounted to the tailstock? I happen to have several Nova G3s (estate auction sales for huge savings) and have made my own version of a Longworth chuck. The only downside side I can think of is the ring thickness would be limited by the depth of the Longworth’s grippers and bolt. The ring would need to be of a greater thickness to prevent damage to the Longworth chuck. In other words, thinner depth rings would not be good candidates for use with this idea.

Interesting but I still don’t understand the concept of having a folding chisel to use like a pocket knife.

Somewhere around the 5:15 mark you should have either loosened one of the nuts for the belt or tightened one while it was moving and as it started to move. But you kept right on sanding with total abandon as if the belt was tracking straight. Why? Didn’t you see it moving towards the motor? This seems to be part of your problem. You let it move to far without adjusting it. By the way if your dust collection was on it’s totally inadequate for this sander. Reducing it from its designed size should never be done. All that sawdust could be getting under the belt making it slip and move towards the area of least resistance.

That style of clip is trash. I have a different brand of knife with that style. It does not stay put. He's absolutely convinced they're the be all end all.

Instagram of the handle, you could install a face plate and then put the sanding block on the other end. This should guarantee that your ring will always be flat to the sanding disc.
