If you are talking about the one that’s half the size that is called a slug. It has no prime mover just traction motors which use power from a mother unit (which would be another regular locomotive it is paired with) to have better tractive effort in order to pull more.

@@RailfanNoah04Thank you. I just Googled and read about them. What I learned…Apparently locomotives produce more power than they can put on the track without overheating various bits, and creating wheel spin. The slug takes that excess power and sort of evens out that power, spreading the tractive effort (if that’s the right term) to more wheels. If that’s the case I’m surprised I don’t see more of them out west where they use multiple DPUs to get over the mountains. I hope I understood this right.
