Thank you! Florida Atlantic Giving Day 2024
Thursday, Sept. 19, 2024 was Florida Atlantic's second annual Giving Day. Thanks to the generosity of our faculty, staff, alumni, students and friends, FAU Harbor Branch exceeded our one-day fundraising goal with 57 individual donations totaling over $6200! Funds raised from this effort will support four important programs: the Ocean Discovery Experience after school program, Semester By The Sea, Shark Research and Conservation, and Coral Reef Research and Conservation. On behalf of everyone at FAU Harbor Branch, THANK YOU!

I heard they were the "right" whales to kill mostly because they float when they die as other whales sink...

Amazing creatures, these Diatoms and Dinoflagellates. It seems that ‘harmful’ algae blooms almost always occur in shallow, coastal waters (like lagoons, estuaries etc) as opposed to the open ocean. Does this mean that Dinoflagellates are limited to these waters? Or are there other factors? If iron is added (as a result of a volcano eruption, or on purpose, by human interference), does this benefit the Diatoms mostly?

Brian, as a native Floridan and lover of Florida Reef thanks for your work! These days it is en vogue to blame everything on climate change and that is simply irresponsible and disingenuous because it discourages practicable action that could be undertaken on a local and state level. Gene Shinn has pointed out that African Dust events are likely another exacerbating factor in this equation. But again, not sure what could be done about that...Everglades hydrology and nutrient loading however, could be easily fixed in 10-20 years of policy and construction.
