Hey mate, what is the temp process for your still. E.g. When you first start your boiler for a distillation run what temp are you aiming for to load your plates? Do you adjust power throughout the run? and if so, how do you know when to increase power?

I see some people hook the dephleg cold into the bottom and some into the top. I’m confused as to which is more correct

No right or wrong way, but consider if you have the inlet/cold water entering from the bottom then the condenser(s) will be full of liquid and the hot water exits from from the top really no matter how fast or slow the water flow. However if feeding from the top there is a real chance the deflag/condensor unit may have just a little or no liquid actually cooling, if it has drained naturally or the output is greater than the input. It will depend on pumps, air pockets, valves, monitoring etc. I've gone the other way and the outlet just drains the whole system if left on when the water flow is turned off - ie stop the pump and the deflag drains out. In simple terms feeding from the bottom is safer/easier for most of us as we adjust the valve from the top outlet "waste" hose, therefore acts much like all our taps and hoses we use in a house, the pipes are loaded all the time no matter if a tap is on or off. Water feeds in, has enough pressure/volume to fill all the hoses and condensors and we just adjust the outlet - as thats the hot excess after all the work cooling has been done. Mine is feed back into a 1000 lt tank, others I know feed the outlet as waste water, either down the drain or onto the lawn/garden. Fadge

@@gregmcfadyen8865 thanks for your response. I never thought about controlling the flow from the outlet side. Makes a lot of sense to feed from the top and control flow from the exit at the bottom. Cheers mate

    How big is tank?

The cooling tank is 1000Lt and can handle most runs or back to back until the peak summer times, then I allow some to drain and top up with mains, a block of ice or two would do the same thing. The Boiler is 50Lt, can use run fast as stripping say 1 to 1.5 hrs, and do 3 in a row. Or as in video do a full spirit run that may take about 6 hours from start to finish if taking my time.

Is that a beer keg boiler

Yep, sure is. It is actually upside down with the original bottom ring removed flip over then a 4" ferule added, a couple of legs, add element connections and done. The original top is now the drain at the bottom with a elbow and tap setup.
