On a tree-lined parkway in St. Paul, Minn., stands the Church of the Holy Childhood. Father John Buchanan (1910-1998) founded the parish upon returning to the States after serving as a chaplain in World War II. While in the service, he met Bruce A. Larsen (1922-1996), whose dream was to create a school of singing-a Schola Cantorum. From the start, the church boasted a Boys Choir and Mens Choir. Girls and the Womens Choir were added in the '80s. By the early '90s, Mr. Larsen had passed the torch to Stephen Schmall and Robert Vickery. The small parish has contracted now, and the grade school closed in 2009. The choir still sings, but it is smaller than it was in the late '90s when there might be 80 singers at Sunday high mass.
Most of the music on this channel was recorded at Sunday high mass on cassette tapes. For a church choir, the Schola did well, and there is unique music that deserves to be heard. I hope these videos can be a monument to the vision of Fr. Buchanan and Mr. Larsen.

The Agnus Dei from the Pastoral Messe in F-dur, opus 147 (1830) by Anton Diabelli. Conducted by Stephen Schmall at Midnight Mass, December 25, 2002. At Holy Childhood, Midnight Mass actually began at midnight, so it was probably about 1:00 a.m. when this was being performed. For generations of singers at HC, this Christmas mass by Diabelli was one of the best-loved in the repertoire.

The Tenor sounds Fantastic!!! The baritone sounds pretty good too, as well!
Mr. Schmall , put all the music of this particular Mass together! Fine music director that he was!!!!! ( the proof is in the pudding) As you listen to many of these renditions from these LIVE at Mass renditions on the Feast of the Holy Family, that particular day, they are all GOOD, because of Mr. Schmall’s musical wisdom!!! Amen!
This Gloria by Diabelli, is FANTASTIC!! Great work, fine rendition!
One doesn't hear relatively obscure classical mass settings like this very often, and I congratulate the Holy Childhood people for performing them. The quality of the singing is not strictly professional, of course, but it's probably on a par with that of its original presentation back at the turn of the 18th century.
👍
Just fun joyful music!! Not overly complicated, just pure with a sort of simplicity to it.
LIVE at MASS!! Recorded LIVE at Mass!!
This version shows the ABSOLUTE best conducted version ( pace wise, and overall shape of the piece as a whole),!!!!! ENOUGH SAID!!! Let your ears do the judging!
I can’t tell you how many countless trebles I taught over the years truly loved singing this piece and told me so!! Just listening to this beautiful rendition tells you all you need to know!!!!! AMEN!
Stephen Schmall, the Music Director, in that year programed this piece!!!!! That is the God’s honest truth!!! Vickery, just played his organ part , ( which he could do well)!! Enough said!!
AGAIN, this was recorded live at Mass!!! Live recordings are real and true!!!! You can’t fake it with many takes and edits as the commercial recordings so often do. In a way that is fraudulent!!! Live recordings are the best!!!! Music rendered honestly and in TRUTH!!!!! AMEN!
Fantastic rendition of Schubert’s great piece of music!!! Amen!!!
This piece is unique, it is not overly complicated and difficult , quite straightforward at that. It has been sort of a “people’s favorite “ since its first performances. It grew a lot of favor from listeners even into the 1960’s!! This rendition here ,is one of the few , in comparison, rendered in the last few decades!
Nice singing here by Laura and Anna , of Reger’s beautiful Christmas song.
The Sussex carol is one the brilliant British carols! Beautiful carol!
Very nice rendering of a beautiful carol!! The men sound very good here!
Christmas! This is a fine piece of music, in the pastoral tradition, SO fitting for a Christmas piece!! Enough said!
This is a beautiful carol, and a fine rendition of it!!
Thank you! This is the tune we sang in the Episcopal Church growing up. The artwork is beautiful. My only wish is it included Verse 2: "Israel's strength and consolation."
This piece written by Howells, is a really fine piece of music!!
I have had to listen to this about ten times in a row. I honestly cannot think of a single better example that I've ever encountered of a congregation singing so sensitively and with such perfect devotion. And this is one of those rare examples where the text is stunning, the music is stunning, and the two paired together are nigh unto perfection itself. This has made me literally cry, and I cannot thank you enough for exposing this gem. As it happens, I have the Fr. Selner hymnal, and will be reviving this hymn at our cathedral. Post haste.
Well put. Stunning. It gave me chills too…the build up to Since the Ave of that midnight when thou wert anointed Queen has all the feels 🥹
@@nickbobaymusic8691 It truly is stunning. I have decided to make this our "post communion meditation" for our Christmas Eve Masses. I cannot stop myself.
Gives me chills! Stunning. Simply stunning.
We did this every year for Midnight Mass at my parish -- performed by the Men & Boys Choir before me, and then with an adult choir during my years as music director. It's not Christmas without it!
The cello solo by Thomas Austin here is really beautiful! Such fine playing!! He was a REALLY fine cellist and musician and a REALLY fine human being!!!! By working with him , he made my life better, what more could you ask of anyone !!!!!! He is the Best!
👍👍
The mere fact that this piece of music can be performed at different tempos and still sound good, is a statement as to the quality of the piece of music!!!!! AMEN!
Thanks for this
Maranatha Come Lord Jesus Come !
This Mass by Goemanne is a fine piece of writing! Brilliant in many ways , so solid for the forces he wrote it for!
I commented on this masterpiece last year and my feelings about it have not diminished one bit! Why is it hardly performed? Looking forward to hearing it live this Thursday here in California. It is a no brained for the music programmers at Notre Dame. Would be heavenly divine in there, plus Gounod was French.
A fine performance! Handel, when writing at his best, wrote incredible music!!! The rest of the time wrote Really fine music!!! He was truly one of the greatest composers to write for the voice that ever walked the face of the Earth! Enough said!
Great well done
That was a fun, feisty rendition
Certainly was! Yours is a good description of a spirited performance!
This is such a BEAUTIFUL carol!! Most of the trebles I trained over the years that sang this beautiful carol , liked it!!!!! That says a lot!!! In my time as director there, we maybe rendered it three or four different years at Midnight Mass. The young singers are telling you in truth, what is truly good!!
The composer Henri F. Hemy was my great-great-grandfather. I assume the picture at the start, with his Royal Modern Pianoforte Tutor in the background, is him in old age. I wish I knew where this picture can be found.
I cannot remember where I found this image, but send me an email at the address in the About section, and I will email it to you.

Really nice rendering. Nice shape to ALL the phrasing!
There is a simplistic beauty to this tune written by J. Michael Haydn. He was a fine composer and wrote many fine works. However, it seems like he was always living in the shadow of his older brother, his older brother was one of the greatest composers of all time!! Yet , the younger brother, Johann Michael, wrote many TRULY fine pieces of music!!! I have performed a number of them myself. And find every one of his compositions that I have studied and performed to be really well written and to be really fine music indeed !!! I am a Haydn fan!!! Both of , Franz Joseph , and Johann Michael! Enough said!
Beautiful song that brings to mind cherished memories of the Holy Triduum.
I will always remember that Larry Jagoe declared that this was his Number 1 Hymn on the all time Hymn Hit Parade!! 😊👍
Diabelli’s wonderful Pastoral Messe in F , is like a breath of fresh air. Most likely the greatest Christmas Mass ever penned!
Johann Michael Haydn: Missa sub titulo Sancti Leopoldi, MH 837: I. Kyrie
Thank you! I have updated the title of the post and the description.
Again, Widor was a very fine organist, composer, and musician! He influenced and inspired many young composers and organists in his teaching! Many of them developed into fine composers creating fine works of music! Bless his soul, for sharing his gifts and knowledge and passing it on to future generations!
Both renditions of this piece, as arranged by Gordon Young, available on this playlist, are solid performances, and definitely worth giving them a good listen!
There are two different performances of this same version arranged by G. Young on this channel. Both are very fine renditions, and definitely worth listening to!
Also, such beautiful string playing!!! SO Mozart! The choir sings well here, and the soprano soloist , Laura, sounds great! Bless her heart.
lovely ❤️❤️❤️ thank you
❤❤❤❤
This is a truly fine LIVE at Mass recording!!!! It captures the spirit of the moment. And the true spirit of those that rendered it SO WELL!! Really fine rendition to say the least!!
The conductor of this fine rendition was yours truly Stephen Schmall!! I also trained all the young singers and the choir!!!! Enough said!
Any piece written by Haydn 👍👍👍!!
