Retro Review: WEIRD LOVE #21 (2017) IDW 's 1950s romance comic reprints
In this video, I take a look at WEIRD LOVE #21, published by IDW and Yoe Books in 2017. This was a series that reprinted oddball 1950s romance comics, reproduced from scans of the original comic book pages. I was unaware of the series until finding this issue in a dollar bin a while back, and was surprised to learn that WEIRD LOVE ran a total of 24 issues.

มุมมอง 10414 วันที่ผ่านมา
In this video, I take a look at the most recent (November 3, 2024) Sunday newspaper comic strip section of the Detroit Free Press. I also show some from previous years, going back to December 1989. As noted in the above video, I had previously done a video on my channel showing my newspaper comic strip collection. This video was posted waaayy back in 2010, so the video quality sucks, but if you...

Why Marvel & DC Comics Aren't Sold On Newsstands Anymore
มุมมอง 302หลายเดือนก่อน
Often you will hear comic book fans complain that Marvel and DC Comics are no longer available on spinner racks at 7-11s and drugstores (like in the old days) so that kids today could discover comics without having to go to a comics shop. You will also hear complaints that comics are too expensive (currently $3.99 or $4.99 for a standard size issue). These fans will offer suggestions that the p...

Idiot's Greatest Comics #36 audio tape recording (circa January 1982)

This time, however, I acted out (with my two sisters) an adaptation of an issue of my homemade comic book series, "Idiot's Gre...

I love these when I can find them. Somehow I missed out when they originally came out.
Still waiting for mine to turn up to nz can’t wait
Good artwork; glad to see series is still around after the many decades✔️
This is pretty good! Glad you went with the Infantino logo on this one. 🦇 I'd love to see you do a GA Batman. 🔥
Nice review Rob, I'm tempted to try it out! Haven't bought a new release book in 10 years. Crossovee mania put me off collecting back then, wasn't really interested in buying 4 or 5 books a month to keep up. The ensmble nature of the book was too much for my taste, I know traditionally it's a strong suit in the Bats universe, it does have it's limits for me. If i knew DC weren't to go down those roads too much i'd be good. Ohhh and if they'd keep Oswalda and the like out of the main books I'd be way more likely to stay around. I really like that as a life long comic fan you still buy new books! Good on ya fren. 💚🦇
I have a few of this title. Just ordered issue 98 as the cover made me chuckle! It's amazing to me how cheap a lot of this era DC books can be in mid grade... I do sorta get it as they're funky, but read an issue here and there and they are really fun. Nice collection and thanks for the show. 🧛
Thanks!
thats cuz comic books are collectables and u dont want any random mofo touching and handling a comic book u might want to buy
Hi Rob, Magazines are scary expensive imo. Comics are still good value, j order them (new releases) online ... Mostly new facsimilies, haven't ordered a contemporary comic in about 12 years now, the crossovers really got out of hand with Batman, who was my go to. I am tempted to try Absolute Batman. The Archie digest was pretty cool. Whilst I much prefer a physical book, i also read digitally - pretty convenient way to read when i'm out and about. 🐦
I think Marvel and DC could do much better than newsstand distribution, as far as gaining new readers, if they were to just somehow connect the movie audience to the comics. You see virtually no cross marketing or promotion.
I kind of want to see that Mad Magazine but it is pretty expensive.
I bought two copies, one to read and I gave one away. It's a sweet magazine with a tone of great, and some iconic, features. Really enjoyed it! While it is pricey, I did get more bang for my buck that I would with a couple issues of a comic..
Steven Butler here- great review! Thanks for the kind words- Lily and I are waiting on our comp copies to come in-
Your videos are SO good. Been pick bit's and pieces of Steve's work over the past 30 years... Finally at the point of putting a more concentated effort into reading a lot of his lesser known stuff. One of the great artists to look for, fabulous work and gathering a lot of his stuff is not always a bank breaker. Pretty surprising but great as i'm a reader first. Again a prolific look at a prolific man. I without doubt will return to your vids to enjoy and digest all the greatness you share. Viva Steve. 🐦
Thanks for the nice comment! I hope to be able to do more of these "Overview of Ditko's career" videos in the future, covering the period from the 1980s to 2010s. The clips for the period 2008 to 2018 were already made a couple years ago, though not uploaded to TH-cam yet since I haven't done videos for the years in-between yet.
How long did it take you to collect all of your Johanna lindsay romance novels?
Not long at all. She was a popular author and her novels can frequently be found at thrift stores and library sales in my experience.
I would have bought them all!
Do you order the comics through the website? How do you get them so fast
If you get a 6-issue subscription to the "Classic Archie Comics Mega Sub," you receive the next 6 one-shots that Archie Comics puts out as they are released. Sometimes they arrive a few days after they go on sale in shops, but many times the issue will arrive early in the mail. You can find the subscription option at the Archie Comics website, link below: store.archiecomics.com/collections/archie-digest-subscriptions/products/betty-veronica-friends-forever
Are you a DC only fan? rofl
Dan Parent is a cool dude
Love that cover.
Im definitely liking what dc is doing right now more than marvel but im mostly indies now
I got the foil cover it's awesome.
Glad I found your channel!! Most of the Archie Comics you have reviewed recently I have bought and waiting to be delivered/Thinking of buying now I'm convinced!! Thanks for giving us a preview of the comic❤
Thanks for watching!
Found My face Thank You Neal
I don’t collect “new” comics but I’m a sucker for these facsimiles. Try Life Magazine sized bags and boards they should fit most treasury editions
Good idea, thanks!
Thank you for the walk down memory lane❤
I wonder why they didn't call her power woman there is no way she is a girl 🤔🤔🤔🤔
I like the comic and this run.
I had to get this facsimile and I was very pleased. Excellent production. My original was unfortunately destroyed not long after I bought it off the rack and I never replaced it, especially in recent years when the price really escalated. It’s a beautiful comic for sure.
DC Infinitely just added this Treasury issue this week
Wasn't aware of this. I also somehow avoided getting a copy over the years, even though I have most of Neal's other major works. Thanks for the review!
Nice review. The amount of dialogue in the story is incredible for an Archie comic! I subscribe as well and this issue is particularly wordy. "Back in the day", this story would have been condensed down to 4 or 6 pages and been much much more enjoyable. Maybe it will work? I went to the comic shop today to get some other new comics and they had a dozen or more copies of this issue on the shelf when they rarely have any. It's the reason I subscribe in the first place.
Thanks for the comment!
The “red swim” is just that potent red wine they put in the water. The brief battle with Attuma is due to Attuma being inebriated. Namor used his wit and tricked Attuma into getting intoxicated so he could defeat him more easily as he felt he may not be strong enough to fight him outright do to his recent incarceration.
A word of advice.when reviewing a comic try,try opening it up and review what's inside it instead of gushing for fifty minutes about the damn cover.
This is great! Can't wait for the Veronica and Betty swimsuit covers in the upcoming months!
I really enjoyed the facsimile as well and I think Archie did an excellent job in the reproduction. Can’t wait for some of those earlier issues to be reproduced, particularly from the 1950’s and early 60’s, some of those classic cover Jughead’s, etc. Nice review/video!
Thanks!
Loved this, sadly I was not a teen in the 80s but I almost feel like I was, I was born in 95 but I grew up on anything 80s, thanks to my dad who loves the 80s. So it wasn't long until I loved everything 80a which led me to 80s books, especially the YA books like these.I love these books and am very jealous of Americans, I collect all these series myself and I am in Europe so I have to buy them from second hand book stores in America which has cost a lot over the years, and I always see Americans just getting them in thrift stores, so definitely jealous lol. Thanks for showing all these books! I have only a handful of the Caprice books as they tend to be more rare, I am at around 150 on my Sweet Dreams collection though after 10 years of collecting them, I have managed to collect a good library worth of 80s YA books, but I would sure love to get into a book American thrift store!
I think this new home (Front Door Cabaret) is actually a way to keep him away from the Avengers, etc, now that Sam is in the main Avengers book, crossovers, he's basically being more promoted than Steve bc of his upcoming movie. Also, it doesn't necessarily mean he has to stay there all the time I guess. I would like it tho, he has an interesting chemistry with Lyra lol
Awesome segment, Rob Imes. I broke that thumbs up symbol on your segment. Sustain the good work. Excited see your next video from you.
Hey are you looking for tv guides I have over 100 of them
I read FATE magazine as a child. This stuff rots your mind!
I just bought an '86 box marked as a '78 w/ discs un-played. Ultrasonically cleaned the White Album to play test...fairly quiet noise floor w/a dynamic and detailed soundstage (so like the 1st time you played yours years ago). So not what I expected but I also did not expect my wife's head turn when Revolution came on...we were both smiling ear to ear...that is when I know I have found at least audiophile-adjacent pressings lol
Great review. The art looks good. I enjoyed that Ghost Machine Special but missed out on this RedCoat series as well. Probably going to wait for the trade. Thanks for the review.
Thanks for the comment!
To me the omnibus covers look the most dated. It's interesting Harlequin thought they were being very modern. I thought they were just being cheap 😆
Fuck🥲❤️
Awesome!!! Can you do a read a long ?
What a steal you got! WOW. I am so envious of the deal that you got. If I were you I sure would keep them all. I use to be able to buy a grocery bag of these romance books for $2 so I just kept buying them. I had the room to store them so I ended up having thousands of books. Just now getting around to reading them. I just found your channel. I subscribed.
Mary Burchell was no ordinary writer. With her sister, she went to nazi Austria to rescue jews from nazis. Her real name was Ida Cook. She genuinely was an opera fan: it was the cover that the sisters used for explaimong trips to Austria and Germany and Netherlands. Her pre-war romance income paid for the rescues and eventually paid for a flat in London to act as a safehouse. There is more 'experience' and inventiveness in Mary Burchell's background than the books could show.
Thank you for the great video. I just subscribed to the magazine. I have always wanted to start a collection of 'something' in my life. Fate looks like a fun magazine. I had a few famous monsters of filmland magazines so I guess that might count? Have a good day.
I jumped in at issue 1081 and i'm already so tired of it :)
Oh, wow. I want to go to there.
Thanks for sharing, I was explaining to someone today why we had a coffee table, I’m from Australia that’s what we called it, a place for the tv guide and magazines.
