SomeDungeonGuy is all about role playing games, specializing in Dungeons and Dragons but stretching to wherever pencil and paper combine with adventurers. Beginning my TTRPG career some decades ago, I found myself out of the loop for a time. During that time I longed for the camaraderie, begged for the laughter, and desperately missed gathering everyone around a table to have a good evening of fun. Well, after a long spell away from the gaming scene, I found a need for dungeon masters, and that's where this channel is born.
Becoming a DM/GM for any TTRPG can be overwhelming, stressful and sometimes daunting to the point of being a barrier to entry for many new Dm's. That's where I hope to come along, whether you're a first timer, or someone who's been out of the game for a while I'm bringing you the things you need to get going in your DM role faster, easier and with realistic expectations and helpful tips and tricks.

Building a story with Inkarnate map making. D&D or any other TTRPG
This exactly what I was hoping for. I love hand drawn, but i want the readability of wonderdraft.
Awesome! Yes being able to type on screen is helpful and often necessary.
Excelent video, thanks. But i think, that problem is, that we compare two absolute different programs. From my perspective, simple different beetween both tools are, that Incarnate is tool used primary to create every type of map. Not just for dnd, but to books, stories for fun or enything elese. But Wonderdraft is tool used primary to create map for DnD and similar games. Yes map is map so both can create every type of map. But!. Wonderdraft have distance mesure tools, regions and other tools which is realy good for creating DnD campain. Other big plus for Wonderdraft, i can share my work with other people freely. Its good for DM :) , that i can do simple first steps and friends do details on maps. Incarnate know sharing map too, but bad way. In Inkarnate i can set ma map for sharing and other guys can take COPY of it. It mean that as DM i can again do simple charts and someone can continue on details. But we cannot work toghether. Mean that if friend did some new things in his map, i can take again only copy of his map and my first map was stay without changes. Its horrible working this way :) So from me, both programs are wery strong in what they do, but on everyone is what exactly want to do and then select right tool ;)
Best kind of how-to video. To the point, well explained and concise.
Aww thanks!
You saved me hours. Hours of time. Great job and hope life is well!
Thank you so much!!! I'm glad I helped. If there's anything else you would like help advice or just ideas on, let me know in the comments!
please lower the music in next vidoes. its annoying
Feedback taken. I appreciate it. I was trying to find a balance
@@SomeDungeonGuy thank you very much for your good videos.
@@SomeDungeonGuy I suggest you use the ducking option for background music in premiere pro. it automatically lows the BG music whenever you speak. thanks
Omg that's brilliant... Didn't realize that was an option.. thanks!!

Sweet. What map would you like done?
Its a hand drawn cave survey map ive done. Thought it would be cool to see what you could do with it.

I don't have premuim, so unfortunatley I cant use this feature :(
Nooooo... I'll say if it's something you'll do fairly often.. the couple bucks a month isn't bad. The yearly rate is pretty inexpensive too. But... If you don't want the monthly payment part wonder draft is pretty darn good for a one time fee for world maps.
Needed this thank you!!
Awesome! Super glad it helped... If you have any other ideas, leave a comment

Will Wonderdraft work on a Mac? The site says it will, but when I try to order, I am not offered a Mac option. Their customer service seems non-existent.
One is a subscription and the other isn't. The choice is obvious to me.
I understand that part.. but I find inkarnate so much better for my DM needs..
@SomeDungeonGuy I get that, having something you can rely at any point, that you can access from anywhere have its perks. In my case, I'm from Brazil and I am not paid in USD. USD subscriptions are a very expensive trap.
@rabonssons that's more than reasonable :-)
I try to upload the image but ever time I do it it doesn't show up on my categories
It may be over the image size limits?
Perfect!
Glad to hear it helped!
@@SomeDungeonGuy Don't know why you have so little subscribers but I will watch anyways!
@Noah-td1tj not enough recent content . Life got crazy and I had to hold off... More will follow
@@SomeDungeonGuy I will be looking forward for it!
when i upload the map, it says "couldnt upload custom texture"
Is it possible the file was too large? Are you adding a texture to incarnate?
@@SomeDungeonGuy i checked the dinensions of my map and it was ok, but then i saw the map was .jpg instead of .png or .jpeg so i converted it to .png and it worked.
Glad that smoothed out. Happy map making
@@SomeDungeonGuythank you!
Of course
Love the PacMan ghost
Haha thank you... I like it too :-)
One of the biggest positives of wonderdraft I didn't see demonstrated but was mentioned at the very end is that you can take a section of a world map, enlarge it, and use it as an overlay so you can make a zoomed in section to use as a player area map while keeping exact scale / shape and so forth of the world map. Overlay > top pages selection > import image > opacity slider or turn off / on. Very cool when your continent map shows 200 miles from here to there and the zoomed in player map has the same scale, coastline and landmarks in relation.
Very very good point.. I believe I do go on to mention that in another video. Super good call out though thanks.
tbh, i find wonderdraft + dungeondraft (the second one even better if you pay Forgotten Adventures assets) better. I bought inkarnate twice and it definitely wasn't the best option for my basic mapmaking needs. Maybe inkarnate is better for a townmap, but WD and DD are way better for everything else.
I'm definitely glad you found a combo you're happy with. Neither are bad options for sure.
thanks for this tuturial i enjoy the summer premium tria and i didint finish my map at time and thie premium trial time finish so do it to finishi my map in a second cont thnks so much
Happy to have helped.. always willing to try to make mapmaking better for everyone
I had the grab bars that you mention at 9:50 for scaling appeared for me once, and now when I select a stamp, it only shows the corners to grab for scaling. Is there something that I have to do to enable to grab bars to scale a side by itself?
Try this . Some stamps have various traits on the left under advanced.. lemme think I'm not at my PC. There is an advanced option that lets you choose multiple/single etc under placement type I believe it's called. If you click a stamp, go to advanced, choose single, when you click I believe the grab bars come up. Hopefully that helps. If not shoot me a DM or another comment and I'll hit my computer and figure it out for ya! Thanks for the comment!
@@SomeDungeonGuy Thank you so much for the reply. Unfortunately, that doesn't work. All that option is for is if you want to place a single stamp, or if you want to place multiple. The multiple just enables features that makes it easier to place multiple stamps without the edge lines appearing.
Also thank you for being so willing to help me with this. I've googled and I haven't found anything even close to what I'm talking about. Either I have a rare bug, or I'm missing something really simple.
I suspect really simple.. I still do that after using it for years :-)
I'm at work at the moment... I'll take a look at it in the morning
Is there any way to change the background from sea blue?
Of course. Go to the paint brush, click on background and paint a color. Should be good.
@@SomeDungeonGuy ohhhhhh duh. I got into dming recently and bought the premium for Inkarnate because it looks so awesome
I love it. It's by far my favorite map making platform. Msg if you need any DM help :-)

Is it possible to stretch stamps?
To a certain degree. You can resize them on the options on the left. Also with s/w
Thanks for sharing this wonderful tutorial. Can i use Google map images instead hand drawing map ?
Actually any image you want. Load it the same way . Boom insta teal maps :-)
2:47 well i press enter and nothing happens. Catalog right image is shown and if i make it smaller/bigger it shows. As soon as i stop shrinking it it is gone already :/
well got it now^^
So you're good?
@@SomeDungeonGuy yeah for now^^ first steps worked and it's 4:18 am and I'll have to see how ne next steps will go tomorrow. Thanks for now.
You’ve convinced me to sub to Inkarnate for a month and purchase Dungeondraft. I think both have styles that could fit different kinds of content I’m making.
I've been subbed for a while.. I do like DD but incarnate has my love .. best of luck!!
whenever i use inkarnate and open the catalog in the stamps menu, all the placements apart from core needs pro and it leaves me with the basic ones in core
Well.. I believe that's a side effect of not having pro. If you're running s campaign.. pro is probably a good investment.. if you need just one map.. I have s Fiverr account for that :-)
Thank you so much for this! This was exactly what I needed. I'd drawn my map in Inkarnate in one style, but wanted to see what it would look like in a different style. I exported the original to my desktop, then followed your tutorial. Bam! Same map, different styles.
Super glad to help. Comment ideas if you want to see something specific too
Great video, I am currently looking into map tool options for creating a map of an underworld setting, if you are familiar with the Avernum computer games, something in that. A hollow world setting, with land sized caves, fungul trees, things like that. With the asset count, I would say say Inkarnate seems the better solution here, but not sure yet.
I really like it's flexibility. And they've added sci do settings now.. so that's awesome also.
is there a way to do this without pro ???
I'm not actually sure. It's probable you cannot. Someone on Fiverr would be able to do it though.
Thanks so much - I don't always want to spend hours making a cavern for just one single session.
Glad you liked! I don't like spending tons of time on cavern walls either.. but boy do they look good when you spend the right time :-)
@@SomeDungeonGuy Yeah you're right, the result is prettier - but it's nice to have a quick alternative =)
Yaaaay.
6:26 Using the bracket keys for increasing/decreasing brush size is a Photoshop thing. For people with Photoshop experience, that's a second-nature keybinding. Great comparison video!
Good call out.. thanks!
Your video is good but the audio became horrible can you fix it ?
Unfortunately fixing it in the video at this point is undoable I think.... Hadn't heard the audio mess up though. Maybe try closing and reopening? Future videos. The audio is fine
Was painstakingly filling my caves with the cliff stamp trying to create a similar effect, this was infinitely faster!
Super glad to hear it!!!!
Nice tutorial. I suspect some viewers may be put off by the # of times you say "OK" It happens, like the "um" in other speech. I hope you continue to pick up viewers as your tutorials are good.
Thanks.... Good feedback. . :-)
For some reason this isn't working for me. I can't get the size big enough to show just one of the duplicates of my map and when I increase the size well... It not working for me
Ah. Something I should have clarified that sometimes it will only blow an image up so big.. I've had to go photo edit to make the image bigger to begin with and then adjust the size to fit.
@@SomeDungeonGuy thank you
this is so perfect!!
Super glad I could help! Let me know if you have ideas you'd like to see.
Did it once and couldn't remember. This was fast, concise, and accurate. Thank you!
No prob! Thanks for the comment. Let me know what else you may need.
Very useful, thanks !

Holy crap, just found this, really great video.
Hey there.. super glad to hear you liked it :-) If you have suggestions or requests comment and let me know! Happy to help
You are extremely fast at the end where you go back to normal colors. I dont understand how you get the green and blue back because you flip through screens and options faster than my eye can see :/
Are you talking about seeing the hand drawn map and the newly made one? That is just changing the opacity on that layer. Let me know if I can answer any questions.
Congratulations!!! it is the best tutorial about wondergraft I have seen. I was wondering if I could use a real map (from google earth for example) as a pattern to develop my own maps on wonderdraft? Is it possible? How can I do that?
There are some easy ways to do this. I have a tutorial for inkarnate... I'll see if I can make that my next wonderdraft video! Thanks for the compliment.
In fact.. check out this video for just that. Thanks for the inspiration.. P.s. to use a Google maps image just screen cap the map..and follow this link. th-cam.com/video/KojMlM2Ec88/w-d-xo.html
Nice intro, will have to check out more!
OMG thank you so much. Hopefully they're helpful :-) If you have ideas or anything comment and I'll see if I can make additions and such
A big user of the 1st order, work very well with artifixia worldbuilding method
I'm very glad to hear it helps. Sometimes getting yourself started is the hard part :)
If you're doing anything commercial. Stay away from Inkarnate. Everything you do that goes commercial belongs to them!
Curious where that info comes from?
@@SomeDungeonGuy I am curious too. Inkarnate FAQ page states rather clearly that: "Yes you can use all maps made with Inkarnate Pro commercially, even after your subscription expires."
@@SomeDungeonGuy Then again, something seems fishy in Terms, "Ownership of and Responsibility for Content" section… (I am used to reading very carefully IP/rights sections)
@@SomeDungeonGuySorry, late replying. After reading the fine print, Inkarnate doesn't allow commercial use of the content made with their software. So I stayed away from them. I'll be giving Wonderdraft full credit when our Kickstarter comes out.
You have a commercial license for all maps you make upon purchase of their pro membership. Even if your membership expires, you retain the commercial licenses for all maps you’ve made until that point.
How did you remove the stamps?
Whatcha mean?
@@SomeDungeonGuy I think they are referring to how you quickly remove them in the video by using Control + Z to Undo
Probably. Thanks for helping clarify :-)
thanks man! super helpful. love your accent, by the way! you'd be great at reading audiobooks :-)
Dude.. thanks a ton. I'd like to do audio book reading :-)
Amazing video you just earned another sub.
Absolutely awesome!! I appreciate it.
How is this a conversion? You just make the map a second time.
Well... One you're changing the zoom so you can add detail... In retrospect there's a much easier way to do it.
