Elegy For A Friend - Arneis Quartet
"Elegy For A Friend" is a string quartet composition written at the High School Composition Intensive at Boston Conservatory at Berklee.
Performed live by Arneis Quartet on July 26, 2024 at Seully Hall, 8, Fenway Boston Massachusetts
Heather Braun - Violin 1
Rose Drucker - Violin 2
Daniel Doña - Viola
Agnes Kim - Cello
On June 30, 2024, a fellow classmate and friend of mine named Lucian Oades passed away, leaving my high school community and myself shocked and sad. I decided to write and dedicate my last composition at Berklee to Lucian, using the beautiful instruments in a string quartet.
The piece begins in a haunting G minor, and immediately introduces the main half-step theme that is continuously used. The theme is morphed, both in its actual melody and in its harmonic content. It is constantly modulated into new key signatures and emotions to illustrate the complex nature of death. The piece is not necessarily written as sad, but more melancholy and reflective. It ends in the somber D-flat major, a key signature inspired by the fourth movement of Mahler's 9th symphony, which also reflects on themes of death. The piece quietly fades out like a lullaby, as we say a final goodbye to our friend who is unfortunately no longer with us.
Fly high, Lucian. Rest in peace.
Thank you to program director Mischa Salkind-Pearl, my program teacher Victoria Cheah, my composition teacher Jennifer Jolley, Brian Zeller, Stephen Cai, Santiago Guillen, Nicolas Homsi, Matthew Sperling, Mateo Neandross

TALLY HALL MY BELOVED
ATEEEEE
ATE🔥🔥🔥🔥
goated
The mind electric but the doctor cranked down the voltage
"Condem him to the infirmary~🎶" It gonna be stuck in my head 😅 Now, im going to see if my band can play this at a concert ❤
3:14 yes! I was waiting the whole video for this part and they didn’t disappoint 😼👍
That was awesome, you did great, all of you.
GOD
"Who are tally hally?" How did yall get this video reccomended to you?? 😭🙏
tally hall and miracle musical fans gather!!!! (sljaslkjfasljas was i too late)
You should play it backwards now
It's amazing you really only need 2 instruments for this song.
With the lyrics removed, it's a rather cheery song. Would've never thought it'd sound so good on wind and brass.
I'm gonna BEG my band director to let us play this for our concert in fall istg
why do i hear the lyrics 🧍🏼♀️
I PLEAD AND PLEAD HAVE SYMPATHY FOR ME
Think of these thoughts as limitless light Exposing closing circuitry of fright Think of each moment holding this breath As death minute in decimal Resident minor how do you plead We'll need your testimony on the stand Solemnly swear to tell the whole truth So help you son now raise your right hand Father your honor may I explain My brain has claimed its glory over me I've a good heart albeit insane Condemn him to the infirmary All mine towers crumble down the flowers gasping under rubble Shrieking in the hall of lull thy genius sates a thirst for trouble Scattering sparks of thought energy Deliver me and carry me away Here in my kingdom I am your lord I order you to cower and pray Nuns commence enchanting as the lightning strikes mine temples thus Electrifying mine chambers wholly scorching out thine sovereignty So spiraling down thy majesty I beg of thee have mercy on me I was just a boy you see I plead of thee have sympathy for me See how the serfs work the ground And they give it all they've got And they give it all they've got And you give it all you've got till you're down (Ha ha ha ha) See how the brain plays around And you fall inside a hole you couldn't see And you fall inside a hole inside a Someone help me Understand what's going on inside my mind Doctor I can't tell if I'm not me When it grows bright the particles start to Marvel having made it through the night Never they ponder whether electric Calming if you look at it right!
I love this! It's crazy how underrated things like orchestra and band are these days
I’m about to pull this on my chorus teacher wish me luck 🙏 maybe we’ll actually sing it LMAOO
You can hear the lyrics
God, who's gonna tell em?
Asked my band teacher if we could play The Mind Electric and used this video as reference.
2:50 the piano solo was amazing.
the vocals at 0:02 really struck my heart. The passion and soul that went into this beautiful voice sort of changed the way i see some things in life.
Bro look for the song and what's it about Its the best to me
I think they lost the last verse ?? like it ended at "Doctor I can't tell if I'm not me" while there's still this thing: "When it grows bright, the particles start to Marvel having made it through the night Never they ponder whether electric Calming if you look at it right"
Both carried fr
THIS IS SO GOOD
You would think that the director would have listened to the song a few times to get the song right but nope 😅
All....... For nothing to all....
epic
i really want to do black rainbows in concert band
3:00 WHY DOES THE LYRICS SOUND SO CLEAR HERE
Joe Hawley is Proud
I want my band teacher to let our band play this because literally EVERYBODY in the band is a fan of this song/artist, but we’re playing Aggresioso or smth like that by stanridge (i think I spelt it right idk tho) 😔
For me, this invokes so much emotion and makes chills scatter down my spine. Absolutely stunning. Great job!
A year late, but this is really good! Amazing performance!
It’d be better had there been actual singers, also the “thirst for trouble part” needed to be lower. Just in general this isn’t a song that should be played by a band because you need an guitar and the wind instruments aren’t needed. Now Dream Sweet in Sea Major would’ve been better
This is an absolutely gorgeous piece ! I always love when a music goes from calm, peaceful and dreamy to grandiose like that. I would really like to hear more of your compositions !
cool
YOOO POGGIES
I hope u know I cant stop watching this video over and over, I love murders, it’s one of my most favourite songs on the album, the way you play it is so overwhelmingly beautiful, I wanna teach myself how to play it because of u, and I don’t even know how to play piano to add on, I love singing on top of this video, it’s rlly fun:3
When I saw the you playing the piano I went :0 cause I love playing piano and I’m learning the song jump by Eddie Van Halen
ALL OF MY LIFE, WHERE HAS THIS BEEN??
1:08 music starts
Simon Labeouf
Jesus this was a train wreck
finally someone who agrees with
Tickles my brain
I still can't understand why mind electric is SO popular.
