Charcoal animation by David Begley.
Please watch in HD and feel free to share, like, comment, and subscribe.
An animation study I made in 2016, more a drawing-thinking than a finished work.
I was experimenting with using low-tack masking tape as a eraser / drawing tool.
As with my other work, I made driftwood charcoal for this piece.
I plan to make a new animation this year and need to raise funds for this.
If you would like to help, please consider buying an archival print from my shop.
Images from my animations Breathe and Seed are available:

If you would like to learn how to make charcoal animations,
I give one to one instructional sessions online available via

This is very interesting, i have recently been experimenting with making oak gall ink and nettle ink. I will have to try this next!
@jempurry8151 thank you very much. You could also try eucalyptus leaves or new Zealand flax. Elderberries are high in tannin too but the colour isn't permanent. Beautiful to paint with though. Enjoy!

The last time i saw an artists work and immediately thought 'this is it, the real deal, hats off gentlemen a genius ' it was the work of pablo picasso
Again as in my other comments i do not say this lightly. I have to say it. You are the greatest artist of the 21st century. Maybe i need to pause. Let your work sink in more. Be more absorbed. My opinion im sure will not change.
Simon schama should see your art.
Your work moves me. It seems to be above all about time. Of change. That nothing stays the same and nothing is forever. Thats about as profound as art can get.
@@michaelhanrahanmoore1622 thank you for your kind words Michael. I'm delighted you have enjoyed my work, your enthusiasm is inspiring. Yes, this series of animations speaks of the transitory, of life cycles. When making these I'm fascinated by the surprises that come as the drawings evolve. Best wishes David
The work of genius. The mind of genius. It has been a very long time since i used that word. I rarely use it
I don't say this lightly. You are a genius. Only just discovered your work. Your vision. It is profound. I fell in love with your work immediately.
Thank you for your kind words Michael Best wishes, David www.davidbegley.com/

This reminds me a lot of what I've seen and read of the process used to make traditional iron gall ink. There seems to me some similar chemistry going on, based on how the ink you showed came out so different from the two pots. 😮
@@merri_spiderly6017 yes they are very similar. Alder cones seem to have a stronger reaction to iron. You might enjoy my oak gall video. Many thanks David
Very beautiful, lovely to see it explained in long form video! And beautiful end result with the salt, gorgeous!

Thank you for the inspiration and information. It never occurred to me that alder cones would be full of tannic acid. There are lots of alders a short walk from where I live, so off I went, collected a bag of cones, followed your instructions and I'm now using this ink to write and draw. This adventure makes me very happy.
@@SwedeEad fantastic! Thank you for letting me know. That's wonderful to hear. If you use a metal dip pen make sure to wash it after use to keep it clear. Enjoy! Email me via my website if you want a recipe for iron water. This will make black ink when added to your alder cone ink. Best wishes David
Wow so excited... can't wait till the right season 👍🏼👍🏼
@@meganbartlett8453Hi Megan , thank you for watching.I gather alder cones all year. You can find brown cones on most trees from the previous year. Late autumn and winter are the best time as they are in abundance. Happy ink making! David
I wonder if you could use gum from stone-fruit trees in Ireland like cherry, plum, and sloe. I know someone from Louisiana who makes rock paints and uses gum from local peach trees as a binder for those paints. Also if you know a blacksmith I wonder if you could use the scale from hammering the metal as the source of iron to react with the tannins.
@@rlt9492 yes, cherry gum would be excellent. I don't know about scale but you could try it and see.
